Awelia Music #881249. Published by Awelia Music (A0.1290533). From the arranger: I first came across this traditional English folk ballad on the podcast mini-series “Dolly Parton’s Americaâ€. Dolly’s version was fast-based and up-beat, but the melody struck me as distant yet clear, mournful yet timeless. When I could not find a version that let the voice further explore these qualities, I made my own. The first exists on my record (WALLFLOWER by Aerhart), the second as a live solo act accompanied by a Yamaha Reface CS Synth, and the third as a Silver Dagger choral arrangement, made with and for the Young New Yorker's Chorus Treble Ensemble. The original Silver Dagger tune is a haunting memory in its spirit as much as its history (its many possible origins trace back to the early 1800s). To this day, we wonder whether it’s love, fear or both that sway our overprotected heroine’s decision to “sleep alone all of my life.†Despite her careful consideration, the melody never grants the finality of her decision. This arrangement holds this dissonance within a meditative space - a small moment of stillness in which to let all the big thoughts and emotions come and go. We begin with the memory of the melody, gather momentum and clarity in its pulsing visceral storytelling, then release it, unresolved yet somehow changed.

It is a sentimental and heart warming song, with lots of variety and opportunity for expression. The arrangement is also suitable for SSAT, and can be sung in a lower key if necessary. VOCAL LAYOUT:The melody, or lead line, is divided amongst the vocal parts to give variety. The B.G (background) parts replicate the instrumental accompaniment of the original track, filling out the arrangement and creating the contemporary texture that is at the heart of Pop A Cappella. The dynamics give an indication which vocal parts should be strongest at any given moment, but changes may need to be made depending on the number / balance of singers, and the strengths of each vocal section. Published by Dominic Stichbury (A0.1380273). This beautiful and tender song was written by Kate Bush specifically for the film ‘She’s Having A Baby’. Bush puts herself in the shoes of a man waiting outside the delivery room as his wife gives birth. The song explores his vulnerability at this tense moment. This SSSAA arrangement plays with the form of the original song, whilst incorporating all the themes and hooks that we know from Bush's version. It offers a variety of different textures throughout, handing the melody around and moving between a free chorale-like opening to a steady pulse for the bulk of the arrangement. There is an additional descant soprano part on the top stave, which could be sung by a soloist or a small group. The key bars for this part are 12-15 & 26-28 , where we hear the iconic opening motif. The other passages of this descant can be omitted as necessary depending on the ensemble's skill level. This was arranged especially for Chaps Choir's 10 year celebration concert in 2023. It is both a piece that honors the individual and the whole. It is meant to affirm an individual's worth, as well as the whole collective. When a choir prepares for a performance, they rehearse a piece dozens if not hundreds of times. I wanted the experience of rehearsing I AM to be an ongoing declaration of the singer’s value. Therefore, every phrase in this piece is an affirmation. When a singer finds themselves singing the piece outside of rehearsal, they will be singing words that are positive and affirming. I cannot express how much joy that brings me as a composer.Musically, I AM is both complex, with its 7-part vocal split, contrasting rhythms, and varying accents, yet simple in its repetition, lyrics, and tonality. Each of the 7 parts sings a unique affirmation throughout the piece. They are simple statements like, I am enough and I am love, but can hold so much complexity depending on an individual's relationship with the statement. In the middle of the piece, there is an aleatoric section where each singer contributes their unique affirming statement. It creates a chaotic building of sound before coming together for the first and only time in the piece to sing I AM as a whole choir in block chords. It is one of my favorite moments in the piece because simple and complex are just a beat apart.I AM was commissioned by the Grand Rapids Women's Chorus and premiered on May 10, 2024.
