It has been set for choir (SSAA), piano, harp, fiddle, and flute. One of the Snowdrop’s folk names is ‘Eve’s Comforter’; another ‘Maid of February’. Candlemas Carol Maid of February, if you will, grace mantle, hearth, and windowsill. So let us all be of goodwill and gather round, together. When Winter holds the world in thrall, and ice and snow lie over all, the Maiden can at once recall, the coming Summer weather. If Candlemas is fair and bright, cold Winter will take a second bite. But if this day brings clouds and rain, Winter won’t return again. When Eve and Adam left Eden fair, the snow and ice lay ev’rywhere, which filled their hearts with bleak despair, for they could find no pardon. They glimpsed the flowers of paradise, beyond the earthly cold and ice, but they could not be perfect, twice, nor get back to the garden. If Candlemas is fair and bright, cold Winter will take a second bite. But if this day brings clouds and rain, Winter won’t return again. A teardrop fell from Eve’s sad eye, and froze upon the ground close by. An angel raised it up on high, and called for Heaven’s power. The ice became a snowdrop, then. Thus hope returned to Eve again. And all the people say: ‘Amen!’ in praise of Winter’s flower. If Candlemas is fair and bright, cold Winter will take a second bite. But if this day brings clouds and rain, Winter won’t return again. Alan Wagstaff The legend tells that, after Adam and Eve were banished from Eden’s perpetual summer, they wandered, despondently, into Earth’s freezing winter. Eve wept as the snow fell around them. Seeing her tears, an angel intervened. He caught a teardrop when it froze and breathed on it, turning it into a snowdrop. When the angel left more snowdrops sprang up. Thus, snowdrops in Winter, serve as a reminder, that better times will come around. The tale was often recalled at Candlemas: February 2nd.

Published by Karen Ivana (A0.1096167). This beautiful carol is set to words taken from a Medieval lyric (circa 1400) which may be one of the oldest poems in the English language about Mary and Jesus. It has been described as one of the first Christmas carols, and tells of the Annunciation, where the angel Gabriel appeared to Mary telling her she would bear a child.This music is for four part women's choir (SSAA) and is based on an original folk tune (in Phrygian mode) and takes harmonic inspiration from early music but with a twentieth century English feel. It is gentle and reflective with some gorgeous harmonies and melodies; a successful performance requires a reasonable level of intonation and phrasing.

English.This setting of ‘Twas in the Moon of Wintertime was created for the Manitou Singers of St. Olaf College and their conductor, Dr. Therees Tkach Hibbard. I was asked to re-arrange my SATB setting of the same tune and text (published by earthsongs) but could not come up with a workable solution. Instead, I started over with a setting for accompanied treble choir and viola knowing the skill and musicianship of violist Dr. Charles Gray, Professor of Music (Viola, Violin, String Literature and Pedagogy). Three tunes are incorporated in this arrangement: Une Jeune Pucelle; Vom Himmel Hoch; and, Veni, Emmanuel. The first tune, Une Jeune Pucelle, is the ‘Twas in the Moon of Wintertime melody, and first appears in fragments within the opening viola solo. Awelia Music #881249. Published by Awelia Music (A0.1290533). From the arranger: I first came across this traditional English folk ballad on the podcast mini-series “Dolly Parton’s Americaâ€. Dolly’s version was fast-based and up-beat, but the melody struck me as distant yet clear, mournful yet timeless. When I could not find a version that let the voice further explore these qualities, I made my own. The first exists on my record (WALLFLOWER by Aerhart), the second as a live solo act accompanied by a Yamaha Reface CS Synth, and the third as a Silver Dagger choral arrangement, made with and for the Young New Yorker's Chorus Treble Ensemble. The original Silver Dagger tune is a haunting memory in its spirit as much as its history (its many possible origins trace back to the early 1800s). To this day, we wonder whether it’s love, fear or both that sway our overprotected heroine’s decision to “sleep alone all of my life.†Despite her careful consideration, the melody never grants the finality of her decision. This arrangement holds this dissonance within a meditative space - a small moment of stillness in which to let all the big thoughts and emotions come and go. We begin with the memory of the melody, gather momentum and clarity in its pulsing visceral storytelling, then release it, unresolved yet somehow changed.
