Wis and the North Central College Women’s Chorale A setting of an excerpt of RÃo de La Plata en lluvia from Mascarilla y Trébol (1938) by Alfonsina Storni (1938) Copyright © 2020 Adrienne Inglis Founder, composer, and singer with Inversion Ensemble of Austin, Texas, Adrienne Inglis also serves as principal flute with the Central Texas Philharmonic, flute instructor at Southwestern University, and flutist with flute/harp duo Chaski. She has music degrees from Lewis and Clark College and the University of Texas at Austin. An avid birder and environmentalist, she lives in the rural hill country of Central Texas. Poet Alfonsina Storni began writing during a tumultuous childhood fraught with economic hardships, many disruptive moves, and an alcoholic father. She danced with a theatrical troupe and then became a teacher and journalist. She bore a child out of wedlock and found herself working as a single mother during socially oppressive times. In Buenos Aires she joined the emerging world of women’s rights, becoming an important literary voice in the movement. When her breast cancer returned, her lifelong passion for the sea culminated in her suicide off of the coast of Argentina. [The sky was about to embrace you, blind, and you had in your body of gray heliotropes a submerged city, with the misty sky like a chalice about to overflow with tears.] Program note: Commissioned for Dr. Ramona M. Wis and the North Central College Women’s Chorale of Naperville, Illinois, La ciudad sumergida (The Submerged City) by Adrienne Inglis for four-part treble chorus with nature soundtrack captures the mood of a river, a city, the cloudy sky, and the poet’s own profound melancholy. The sound of rain creates both the ambiance of a misty day on the river and the sensation of cathartic crying from great sadness and pain. The city’s reflection on the river’s surface gives the illusion that the city is submerged in the water. The reflection of the clouds hovering low over RÃo de La Plata looks like gray heliotrope flowers. The apocalyptic images of a submerged city and of tears overflowing from the chalice-sky eerily foreshadow rising sea levels due to anthropogenic global warming. The nature soundtrack of rain was recorded by the composer in the hill country of central Texas, July 2020. Performance note: This aleatoric, asynchronous composition is suitable for remote singing along with the video score and nature soundtrack. Observe the order of entrances, but know that it’s not meant to line up exactly. Finish a phrase even if another phrase has started. Diphthongs move immediately to the second vowel sound. Ya begins with the [dÊ’] sound and llanto begins with the [Ê’] sound, both typical of the Buenos Aires accent. Sing quite expressively except for the neblivelado section which is misty and veiled. The director may wish to indicate the rehearsals numbers or the singers may follow the time on the video-or both. American lyric poet Sara Trevor Teasdale (1884-1933) was the first woman and the first poet to win the Pulitzer Prize for Literature. She won the 1918 Pulitzer Prize for her 1917 collection entitled Love Songs. Teasdale was roundly praised for her lyric mastery and romantic subjects. Her poems most often take on the first person role of their female narrators and protagonists. Teasdale’s first poem was published in 1907. Later that year she published her first collection of poems, Sonnets to Duse and Other Poems, written mainly for the Italian actress Eleonora Duse. In 1911 her second collection Helen of Troy and Other Poems received high praise from critics. Her third collection, Rivers to the Sea from 1915 was and remains a best seller and has been reprinted several times. The three poems used here, Joy, The Answer, and .To Joy all date from 1915. These three poems were also included in her Pulitzer Prize-winning collection Love Songs. Teasdale was born in St. Louis, Missouri on August 8, 1884. She was a sickly child, so much so that she was home schooled. As a young woman she had many suitors, including the poet Vachel Lindsay, who thought he could never provide for her. She eventually married businessman Ernst Filsinger, a great admirer of her poems. The couple relocated to New York City. Filsinger’s constant business travel left Teasdale very lonely and depressed. She eventually relocated to another state so she could quickly divorce him. Filsinger was shocked. Teasdale took up again with Vachel Lindsay, who has himself married and had children. Lindsay committed suicide in 1931 and Teasdale followed likewise two years later. She is interred at Bellefontaine Cemetery in St. Louis.

That's when the music takes me is taken from Neil Sedaka's Solitaire LP. The song was notable as it was one of the only songs for which Sedaka wrote the lyrics in addition to the music. He often finishes his song using the song. (The ending of the arrangement is inspired by how he performs the song live, rather than the recording edit). It reached #18 on the UK singles chart, #27 on the US Billboard Hot 100, and #7 on the US Billboard Easy Listening chart. This arrangement was written for a barbershop chorus, and as such the lowest voice part has a lower range than is custom for choral SSAA writing. The melody sits with the lead for the vast majority of the song, but with the bass part taking a few of the lowest notes. Please note: in keeping with normal barbershop practice the men's barbershop voicing names are used (tenor, lead, baritone and bass) and an octave-shifted bass clef is used for the baritone and bass parts. Vocal ranges are: Tenor: D4 - G5 (D above middle C to G above high C) Lead: B3 - D5 (B below middle C to D above high C) Baritone: G3 - C5 (G below middle C to D above high C) Bass: D3 - D4 (D below middle C to D above middle C).

Seeing her tears, an angel intervened. He caught a teardrop when it froze and breathed on it, turning it into a snowdrop. When the angel left more snowdrops sprang up. Thus, snowdrops in Winter, serve as a reminder, that better times will come around. The tale was often recalled at Candlemas: February 2nd.

You Took The Words Right Out Of My Mouth - Choral Arrangement for SSAA and Piano by Michael Thomas Coull.You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth (also known as You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth (Hot Summer Night)) is the first solo single by the American singer Meat Loaf, released in 1977.  It is a track from his album Bat Out of Hell, written by Jim Steinman. According to his autobiography, Meat Loaf asked Jim Steinman to write a song that was not 15 or 20 minutes long, and, in Meat Loaf’s words, a ‘pop song’.  His autobiography also dates the writing of the song to 1975, the song reportedly being a key factor in Meat Loaf and Steinman deciding to do an album together. The song was the first single released from the album, with an edit of For Crying Out Loud as the B-side.  The record peaked at No. 73 in the Record World singles chart, and didn't appear at all in Billboard Hot 100.  Billboard reviewed the single, finding the guitar introduction to be energetic, the beat to be ‘catchy’ and the vocal performance to be somewhat similar to Bruce Springsteen. Billboard also commented on how occasional pauses in the instruments allow the ‘infectious’ vocals to be highlighted.  Following the success of the next two singles, Two Out of Three Ain't Bad and Paradise by the Dashboard Light, the song was re-released in October 1978 with Paradise as the B-side.  This issue peaked at No. 39 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, over a year after the first release of the song.This exciting and energetic choral arrangement is voiced for SSAA women's choir with piano accompaniment, and will lend a touch of contemporary pop/rock to your next concert.Also available for SATB.
