Published by OLIVIER COSTA (A0.993444). « AMITIÉ » is a composition of about six minutes long for a women's choir (SSAA). It can also be performed by a male choir (TTBB), in this case the singers must read in octabassa treble clef. This piece sets to music a selection of poems based on friendship, taken from the collection Le Bestiaire ou Cortège d´Orphée by Guillaume Apollinaire. We will hear The cat, The peacock, The owl and The ox. The bond of friendship is symbolized here by an element of percussion: the friction of a metal chain, played by the members of the choir from the beginning to the end of the piece. This implies that the choir must use a stand or sing in pairs, one holding the sheet music and the other playing the string. This work explores different vocal techniques: singing, sliding, timbre play, murmuring, rhythmic speaking, declaiming and shouting. These different modes of vocal play are combined with different compositional techniques such as polyrhythm, homorhythmia, rhythmic irregularity, counterpoint, opposition and layering of sound planes. FRIENDSHIP is the second part of a cycle devoted to the work of Apollinaire.

This version starts with a mysterious opening, then the rhythm gradually insinuates itself into your blood. The lyrics are in a confessional style, while there's a theme of self-determination in the metaphorical ladder of the refrain... The song features on Paula Cole's debut album Harbinger (1994) and runs the gamut of emotions from the urgent, unaccompanied opening strains and melancholy of the verses – to the striving, optimistic, melodic refrain and the joyous climax with divided voices. The original main vocal melody is given to the first sopranos, with the rest of the choir offering a gentle, rhythmicised ah accompaniment in the verses. The crunchy chords and occasional dissonances of the original are dramatised and intensified by the live choral setting. The piano part often operates independently, providing harmonic and rhythmic support and a robust bass in louder passages. No sheet music was originally issued with the song – perhaps because of the richly detailed texture of the women's backing voices – and this arrangement by David M. Hoyle represents the first commercially-available transcription/arrangement.

Dem Mainzer (Chor-)Pädagogen und Komponist gelingt es hier nicht nur, die verschiedenen inhaltlichen Facetten dieser mittelalterlichen Minnedichtungen musikalisch aufzublättern. Er bedient sich zugleich auch einer schwungvollen Tonsprache, die in Motivik und Harmonik an die Musik des Mittelalters erinnert, ohne dabei jedoch auch nur einen Moment lang unmodern daherzukommen. Diese vier weltlichen Frauenchorkompositionen sind für ambitionierte Laienchöre gut machbar. Einzige Klippe dürfte – neben ein paar rhythmischen Finessen wie Taktwechseln und Duolen – die Aussprache der mittelhochdeutschen Sprache sein. Eine beigefügte Aussprachehilfe liefert hier aber ideales Trainingsmaterial.
