NON-TRADITIONAL MELODY: A great favorite, and a most well-known song among Christmas carols, Joy to the World was not originally written to be a Christmas carol. There were several melodies attached to the poem by Isaac Watts. The traditional version, which has become the most popular, is attributed to Lowell Mason, and is the fourth revised version. The first part of the tune in the popular version is similar to pieces by George Frideric Handel, and the melody for the second part is Lowell Mason's. Presented herein is a fifth version (maybe there are more!). If one of Handel's rousing pieces could be used for the first part of the song, why not another? I have used the Handel's Overture to the Music for the Royal Fireworks for the first part of the song, and have kept Lowell Mason's rousing ending. Please enjoy. Also available for SATB. ASCAP.

A Beautiful and Haunting Traditional Welsh Song - with English lyricsMyfanwy tells the tragic story of the unfulfilled love of a poor young poet for a beautiful young noblewoman who lived in Dinas Bran castle. The remains of the castle stand above the Welsh town of Llangollen and is the scene setting for the sad love story of Myfanwy. It was first published in 1875.The song has featured in many films and television programmes and has been sung by almost, if not every single Welsh male voice choir. In modern times, it is still a favourite as sung by Cerys Mathews, and Bryn Terfel and is also sung without exception at every Welsh Rugby Union international in the National Stadium, Cardiff.This arrangement for SSAA was requested by a singer in an English female vocal group. It was her Mother's favourite song. The lyrics have been translated to English although the original Welsh lyrics are shown on the last page. The melody is sung by Soprano 2. Â Soprano 1 sings in harmony above the melody although joins the melody at the beginning of each verse.

This setting of the traditional Scottish song of farewell is designed as an 8-part arrangement that male and female quartets or choruses can sing together to finish a joint performance, as well as two separate 4-part arrangements for the respective groups to use when they're not sharing the stage. It was conceived to address the 'cost-per-wear' problem of special occasion pieces that only get performed occasionally but still need rehearsing to the same standard as the rest of the set.This is the setting for women's voices, in which the melody is taken for the most part by female leads, then handed off to the basses for the 3rd phrase of each verse. The first verse is homophonic, while the second explores a variety of melody+accompaniment textures before restoring the harmonic texture to introduce a tag that blossoms out from unison.The versions for men's voicing and combined voicings are also available for purchase.N.B. Dolly’s version was fast-based and up-beat, but the melody struck me as distant yet clear, mournful yet timeless. When I could not find a version that let the voice further explore these qualities, I made my own. The first exists on my record (WALLFLOWER by Aerhart), the second as a live solo act accompanied by a Yamaha Reface CS Synth, and the third as a Silver Dagger choral arrangement, made with and for the Young New Yorker's Chorus Treble Ensemble. The original Silver Dagger tune is a haunting memory in its spirit as much as its history (its many possible origins trace back to the early 1800s). To this day, we wonder whether it’s love, fear or both that sway our overprotected heroine’s decision to “sleep alone all of my life.†Despite her careful consideration, the melody never grants the finality of her decision. This arrangement holds this dissonance within a meditative space - a small moment of stillness in which to let all the big thoughts and emotions come and go. We begin with the memory of the melody, gather momentum and clarity in its pulsing visceral storytelling, then release it, unresolved yet somehow changed.

Published by Keep Calm and Keep Singing (A0.843718). A fishing song from the North East of England, this became popular as the theme tune to 1970’s TV show When the Boat Comes In. However, there is also another melody (in the minor key) also believed to originate from the North East but which was collected by Cecil Sharp in Berkshire. I have combined both melodies giving one to the sops and the other to the altos. Each section then forms an ostinato accompaniment while the other is singing the tune. These “Dance†“Sing†notes although written as dotted minims are to be performed short and light – like bells. The song also works best with a slight northern accent – particularly the short northern ‘a’ vowel on the word Dance and in the phrase “When the boat comes inâ€. NB Although this is written for 4 parts the second alto is optional and the arrangement works just as well without it for SSA choirs.
