Published by Alan Wagstaff (A0.1040537). This haunting, new song, in the mixolydian mode (Bb), is in the Irish tradition. It is written for a female choir (SSAA) with an additional solo part; the accompaniment is for harp, accordion, flute, fiddle, and bass. This song was inspired by J.M. Synge's 1904 play 'Riders of the Storm' and quotes a line from it. The chorus quotes from the Irish version of 'Fhir a Bhartain' a song written in the late 19th century by Sìne NicFhionnlaigh of Tong, Lewis, Scotland. It is both a piece that honors the individual and the whole. It is meant to affirm an individual's worth, as well as the whole collective. When a choir prepares for a performance, they rehearse a piece dozens if not hundreds of times. I wanted the experience of rehearsing I AM to be an ongoing declaration of the singer’s value. Therefore, every phrase in this piece is an affirmation. When a singer finds themselves singing the piece outside of rehearsal, they will be singing words that are positive and affirming. I cannot express how much joy that brings me as a composer.Musically, I AM is both complex, with its 7-part vocal split, contrasting rhythms, and varying accents, yet simple in its repetition, lyrics, and tonality. Each of the 7 parts sings a unique affirmation throughout the piece. They are simple statements like, I am enough and I am love, but can hold so much complexity depending on an individual's relationship with the statement. In the middle of the piece, there is an aleatoric section where each singer contributes their unique affirming statement. It creates a chaotic building of sound before coming together for the first and only time in the piece to sing I AM as a whole choir in block chords. It is one of my favorite moments in the piece because simple and complex are just a beat apart.I AM was commissioned by the Grand Rapids Women's Chorus and premiered on May 10, 2024. Awelia Music #881249. Published by Awelia Music (A0.1290533). From the arranger: I first came across this traditional English folk ballad on the podcast mini-series “Dolly Parton’s Americaâ€. Dolly’s version was fast-based and up-beat, but the melody struck me as distant yet clear, mournful yet timeless. When I could not find a version that let the voice further explore these qualities, I made my own. The first exists on my record (WALLFLOWER by Aerhart), the second as a live solo act accompanied by a Yamaha Reface CS Synth, and the third as a Silver Dagger choral arrangement, made with and for the Young New Yorker's Chorus Treble Ensemble. The original Silver Dagger tune is a haunting memory in its spirit as much as its history (its many possible origins trace back to the early 1800s). To this day, we wonder whether it’s love, fear or both that sway our overprotected heroine’s decision to “sleep alone all of my life.†Despite her careful consideration, the melody never grants the finality of her decision. This arrangement holds this dissonance within a meditative space - a small moment of stillness in which to let all the big thoughts and emotions come and go. We begin with the memory of the melody, gather momentum and clarity in its pulsing visceral storytelling, then release it, unresolved yet somehow changed.
