American lyric poet Sara Trevor Teasdale (1884-1933) was the first woman and the first poet to win the Pulitzer Prize for Literature. She won the 1918 Pulitzer Prize for her 1917 collection entitled Love Songs. Teasdale was roundly praised for her lyric mastery and romantic subjects. Her poems most often take on the first person role of their female narrators and protagonists. Teasdale’s first poem was published in 1907. Later that year she published her first collection of poems, Sonnets to Duse and Other Poems, written mainly for the Italian actress Eleonora Duse. In 1911 her second collection Helen of Troy and Other Poems received high praise from critics. Her third collection, Rivers to the Sea from 1915 was and remains a best seller and has been reprinted several times. The three poems used here, Joy, The Answer, and .To Joy all date from 1915. These three poems were also included in her Pulitzer Prize-winning collection Love Songs. Teasdale was born in St. Louis, Missouri on August 8, 1884. She was a sickly child, so much so that she was home schooled. As a young woman she had many suitors, including the poet Vachel Lindsay, who thought he could never provide for her. She eventually married businessman Ernst Filsinger, a great admirer of her poems. The couple relocated to New York City. Filsinger’s constant business travel left Teasdale very lonely and depressed. She eventually relocated to another state so she could quickly divorce him. Filsinger was shocked. Teasdale took up again with Vachel Lindsay, who has himself married and had children. Lindsay committed suicide in 1931 and Teasdale followed likewise two years later. She is interred at Bellefontaine Cemetery in St. Louis.

This arrangement of this beautiful jazz ballad was commissioned from the late Jenny Mills by a LABBS barbershop chorus, inspired specifically by the recording by Clare Teal.Previously licensed for that chorus only, Jen's partner has now donated this arrangement to LABBS for publication on SMP, so that more SSAA a cappella groups can experience singing this beautiful ballad arranged in super-close harmony, with a beautiful romantic message suitable for shows, weddings, engagements and any time.This arrangement is NOT suitable for barbershop contests, due to many of the chords used having gorgeously evocative semitone intervals within them, which is considered too dissonant for the style. They are nevertheless extremely appropriate and laden with emotion for a show performance, by a group who can handle the tuning of these unusual (to barbershop) chords.To hear the version by Clare Teal that inspired this arrangement, search on YouTube for her recording from her album Don't Talk. A Beautiful and Haunting Traditional Welsh Song - with English lyricsMyfanwy tells the tragic story of the unfulfilled love of a poor young poet for a beautiful young noblewoman who lived in Dinas Bran castle. The remains of the castle stand above the Welsh town of Llangollen and is the scene setting for the sad love story of Myfanwy. It was first published in 1875.The song has featured in many films and television programmes and has been sung by almost, if not every single Welsh male voice choir. In modern times, it is still a favourite as sung by Cerys Mathews, and Bryn Terfel and is also sung without exception at every Welsh Rugby Union international in the National Stadium, Cardiff.This arrangement for SSAA was requested by a singer in an English female vocal group. It was her Mother's favourite song. The lyrics have been translated to English although the original Welsh lyrics are shown on the last page. The melody is sung by Soprano 2. Â Soprano 1 sings in harmony above the melody although joins the melody at the beginning of each verse.

This ritual and the words spoken seem a powerful balm in the face of grief and sadness. The text reflects the mother’s tenderness to the child - sorrowful but loving and beautiful. I found the poem in a collection of “Poems About Trees,†celebrating sacred groves, wild woodlands, and bountiful orchards, paying lyrical tribute to these majestic beings with whom we share the earth.Composed for women’s voices, the flute and bassoon add a doleful fullness to this piece. The Hawaiian music craze  began at the Hawaiian Pavilion at San Francisco's Panama–Pacific International Exposition in 1915. The  music craze was responsible for the the biggest sale of ukeleles in history. Sears Roebuck bought the  Harmony guitar company to make ukuleles and cashed in on the craze. It has been has been covered  dozens of times by celebrity artists world wide, and has been heard in many movies and television shows.  It has been called one of the 50 Greatest Songs of Hawaii.  The little grass shack of the title does not refer to a real location. The popularity of the song led  to the opening of a gift shop in Kona called The Little Grass Shack. A super-jazzy arrangement of this uptempo swing song as sung by Clare Teal, this is one that is fiendishly challenging, but worthy of an attempt by established SSAA a cappella groups who are experienced and confident with the swing genre. The arranger, the late Jen Mills, was an accomplished jazz musician as well as a barbershop singer and LABBS Music Judge. This arrangement has been donated by her partner for publication by LABBS on SMP so that SSAA a cappella groups can experience the joy of this arrangement.This arrangement is NOT suitable for barbershop contest, as the harmony parts are frequently performing non-homorhythmically with neutral syllables, to give a huge hit of big band flavour.The arrangement is predominantly in the barbershop style (melody in the inner voice) but at times the melody gets passed around the other parts too, so everyone gets a turn!With an extended vocal instrumental intro, it would be suitable for a show where a spoken intro overlays the first 30 seconds or so (once the speech is planned, some bars can be repeated as many times as needed to accommodate).For those unfamiliar with the song, look up Clare Teal's performance on YouTube from her album Don't Talk. Arranged for solo female voice, SSAA choir and piano, this is a song of hope, the hope of a girl to escape the workhouse during the Irish Famine years and to travel to make a new life in Australia. At the time the British Crown was encouraging girls to emigrate as a means to redress the gender balance in the colonies – there were too many men and not enough women. Over four thousand young women took this journey between 1848 and 1850. The composer Brendan Graham expressed his own hope that this song might have significance for the descendants of those girls, many of whom were present at the song’s first performance in 2012 at the Irish Famine Commemoration in Sydney.
