Horsey Horsey is a comedy song arranged by David McKeown as a duet for one Clarinet and one Viola. Horsey Horsey was written in 1937 by Paddy Roberts and Ralph Butler. Paddy Roberts was a South African musician who flew in the RAF during the Second World War, then later as a commercial airline pilot. His music career finally got off the ground in the mid ‘50s. Ralph Butler was a well-known comedy lyricist of the time, responsible also for The Sun Has Got His Hat On, Nellie The Elephant and Run Rabbit, Run among others. Nowadays Horsey Horsey is best known as a nursery rhyme.This duet version of Horsey Horsey is a fun Theme and Variations, with the melody presented in swing style, in a slow minor key version, in 6/8 and in a nineteenth century style grand finale. The arrangement moves through several different keys, exploring a wide range of the instruments, and is therefore suitable for players at an Advanced Intermediate level. The Candy Cakewalk is one in a series of ten Easter-themed duets each written in a different American dance style. The Cakewalk was popular in the early twentieth century but its origins go back to slave plantations in the nineteenth century where dancers would often compete for a prize of cake. The music was a marriage of European March and African-American syncopation and was a forerunner of Ragtime. The Candy Cakewalk is suitable for players at an intermediate level and above, with the accessible key and range balanced by the fast tempo, some syncopated rhythms and accidentals. The playing-time is around one and a half minutes, but can be lengthened by adding repeats at the performer’s discretion.
