Though the traditional verses state that the fathers are down in the valley a-prayin''' and the mothers have gone to heaven a-shoutin' (or vice versa), the lyrics have been freely adapted in the folk tradition of floating verses (adapting lyrics to personal experience) to describe the children's experience. The opening percussion motif is intended to evoke Aaron Copland's Fanfare for the Common Man.II. Oh, Watch the Stars-- Oh, Watch the Stars and Great Big Stars, combined in unique ways. The two songs used, Oh, Watch the Stars and Great Big Stars, are distinct in their own right. They have been fused together in this movement, borrowing the text from one and using the tune from the other, and modifying one to partner with the other when presented simultaneously. Published by Tim Riley (A0.1126300). A short choral work by award-winning British choral composer, Tim Riley (lyrics by John Lovat). In just 15 minutes, this work retells the highly dramatic story of The Newport Rising. Tim Riley specialises in creating compelling works of intermediate difficult for Community Choirs with mixed ability singers. In 1839, 4,000 Chartists marched on Newport in Gwent, Wales, UK. They were part of the Chartist movement, campaigning for better voting right for all. Unarmed, apart from sticks, they arrived at the Westgate Hotel in Newport where they demanded the release of a political prisoner being held there. Local militia opened fire. Twenty two protestors were killed and a further fifty injured. The leaders of the march were sentenced to be 'hanged, drawn and quartered'. Although the march ended in tragedy, most of their demands for universal suffrage are now enshrined in the laws of most democratic societies across the world. The music has been composed in a style that many will find reminiscent of Les Miserable, but there are also touches of Lloyd Webber, Kurt Weill and Gilbert and Sullivan. This arrangement is ideal for community choirs and is a SAAB arrangement. There are two alto parts, but the lower alto part could easily be taken by tenors to give a SATB arrangement. This piece was originally composed and arranged for the Insole Court Community Choir in South Wales (near where the Chartist March took place). In May 2022, the Insole Court Community Choir competed at the Cheltenham Festival for Performing Arts with Tim Riley conducting and won the Musical Theatre section with this work. Arranged by stanzas in unison, SA, solo, SSA, and unison with descant, the three-part texture appears for just one stanza. An excellent piece for a women's chorus for church or a Christian college/university, but could also be sung by a very good treble or children's choir. The organ accompaniment is written in two staves and could easily be adapted for piano or keyboard. About 3 1/2 minutes in length.

After an instrumental introduction, based on the refrain from the original hymn by Robert Lowry (1864), the newly composed verses begin with a musical theme meant to represent flowing water in a rippling river or stream. The original lyrics are adapted for all five verses and the refrain. The first verse is followed by the refrain, adapted from the original hymn. After that the refrain follows verses 3 and 5. The song ends on the final refrain, as the tempo slows and the flowing water theme ends. The vocals start out unison, but quickly divide out to SAB parts, all in a comfortable range. The melody in the verses shifts from soprano to alto, just before it gets too low for some sopranos. However altos or baritones could probably sing the melody, as the highest notes are likely still contained within their upper range. Thus the piece could be performed as a solo for altos or baritones. Though the melody shifts, a bit, from soprano to alto, it is easily heard in continuity. Thus, intuitively, the audience, or congregation, will clearly hear the melody, and be easily able to sing along. The score provided here, contains the SAB parts and piano (with chord symbols). As you listen to the example provided, you will hear a string trio playing in the accompaniment, along with the piano. The violin, viola and violoncello adds a nice dimension to the accompaniment sound. An accompaniment track is also available under item no. S0.870603. History: The Father Sent the Son is the title song of a cantata I composed ten or so years ago for a church choir that could barely muster a men's section. They loved to sing. They rehearsed every Sunday afternoon between services and sang every Sunday morning for worship and often in the evenings. They loved the entire cantata and sang it with enthusiasm. Since that time other choirs have song the cantata, and I have added and subtracted and rewritten through the years. I wanted to get the entire cantata as close to perfection as possible before I published it, but I have decided to publish the portions I am most happy with piecemeal for the time being. When all portions are where I thing they should be, I will publish the entire cantata as one work. Lord willing, of course. Please let me know if you enjoy the music I write.
