It was also used frequently during Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament.The poem is a meditation on the Catholic belief in Jesus's Real Presence in the sacrament of the Eucharist, and ties it to the Catholic conception of the redemptive meaning of suffering in the life of all believers.This is a three mixed voices version composed by Andrea Natale on the words of the ancient Christian hymn.

The O Antiphons, or the Great Advent Antiphons, are a series of ancient texts sung before the Magnificat canticle during Vespers on the seven days before Christmas Eve. They date to the sixth century, and have their origins in Old Testament titles for the coming Messiah. These settings, in English, of the O Antiphons were written for SCHOLA HYBERNIAE, an all-female ensemble specialising in Gregorian Chant and early polyphony. Of special interest to the group is music from early manuscripts associated with Irish saints. These short choral vignettes can be performed as a set, or as individual reflective pieces in liturgy throughout the season of Advent. When sung in concert setting, I envisage that the chant antiphon is sung before each choral presentation, and have incorporated references to chant, organum, and open harmony throughout.

Hell is finished; Heaven has the victory. Neighbour, let's sing the praises of the long awaited Messiah. The harmonies are deceptively simple, and from time to time deliberately dissonant, in keeping with ancient modal music styles. (The scoring is SAB - I taught it to my French choir, and as for many 3 part choirs, it's actually S/A/ deep voices!).

Written by Henry Williams Baker (1821-1877) and titled “The Lord Shall Give His People the Blessing of Peace,” the text of “O God of Love, Give Peace Again” was published in the 1861 edition of the landmark English hymnal, Hymns Ancient and Modern. Baker, who is perhaps best remembered for his hymn “The King of Love My Shepherd Is,” was chairman of the committee that prepared that hymnal. Because war is a constant in the world, Baker's text is always relevant. Stanza 1 is an entreaty that God would “make wars throughout the world to cease.” Stanza 2 asks that God recall his “works of old,” for only by God's hand can peace be given again. Stanza 3 extends this thought by asking “Whom shall we trust but thee, O Lord? Where rest but on thy faithful word?” and noting that “none ever called on Thee in vain.” A fourth verse, omitted in some hymnals, ends on the hopeful note that as saints and angels are bound “in holy love,” so we might also be bound to them and to one another in love and peace. This ancient carol tells the story of the fall of Adam, causing humanity to be wrapt in sin. Yet out of God's goodness we are redeemed by the birth of Christ. The listeners are exhorted to begin an holy life to live, and to rejoice and merry be, for this is Christmas Eve. The version presented here is intended for parish choirs lacking in tenor and bass singers, but with a good organ! It starts in a slightly dark, primeval way with open fifths in the organ part, developing into a minor key throughout the verses, but with a decidedly more positive feel in G major in each of the refrains. The accompaniment expresses the drama expressed in the lyrics without the choral parts becoming too involved, and the whole piece (4 1/2 minutes) ends on a celebratory Tierce de Picardy: for this is Christmas Eve!.
