It was released in May 1982, as the lead single for the album Chicago 16. The song reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart in September of that year, where it remained for two weeks. It was the group’s second No. 1 single (their first was If You Leave Me Now) and their first top 50 hit since Tell No Lover in 1978. It spent twelve weeks in the top 5 of the Billboard Chart.Written by Peter Cetera (Chicago’s bassist, who also sang lead vocals) and the group’s producer David Foster (who played piano on the track), the song is about a person trying desperately to hold on to a relationship that has fizzled out, promising to make up for his/her indiscretions and playing the we’ve been through so much card.Hard to Say I’m Sorry was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal and was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America in September 1982. This is evidently an earlier song with some similar words in the refrain. The Good Physician was published in the shape note hymnal, The Southern Harmony and Music Companion as early as 1835. Balm in Gilead was published in The Revivalist as early as 1868. Both of these songs were collected by their publishers and the lack of a listed composer shows their apparent age. ♫ The Good Physician has 4 verses with no refrain. Balm in Gilead has 4 verses with a refrain. ♫ Music and hymn singing was an important catalyst in both the First Great Awakening (1730 to about 1755 in colonial America) and the Second Great Awakening (1790-1840 in the American frontier of the time.) Cape Cod Girls, originating from North America, is traditionally thought of as a short-drag shanty used in activities such as raising sails. Its lyrics vary from version to version between “heaveâ€, “haulâ€, and “bound†away, depending on the physical activity required. Jolly Sailor Bold first appears in a collection of sailing songs out of London, but has many similarities to the Irish ballad The Banks of Claudy. While not used as a working song, its minor tonality and association to sailing folklore makes for an interesting middle point along the journey. This setting contains a newly written verse warning of the dangers of sirens, mythical creatures known to sing to lure sailors to their doom. Lastly, Leave Her, Johnny is a pump shanty, usually one of the last activities done as a ship docks. In these types of pieces, sailors sing to complain about the rough conditions aboard, knowing they are soon to leave and will face no punishment. While sea shanties have been popular repertoire for tenor/bass ensembles, there has been a distinct lack of arranging for treble choirs. Historical research is discovering more and more evidence that while piracy and sailing was male-dominated, female captains like Anne Bonny, Mary Read, Zheng Yi Sao and others made their mark on the high seas. This piece is dedicated to the women that his-tory has forgotten.

It was published a year later under the title America.This arrangement was performed at the Capitol for the 2017 presidential inauguration. Required to be an unaccompanied arrangement, it follows a theme and variations structure where the melody is passed throughout the choir. The song was written by group member Robin Pecknold and has been covered by several groups and solo singers including Kim Wilde in 2013 and Pentatonix in 2014.The meaning behind White Winter Hymnal is somewhat open to conjecture. Pecknold has explained that he intended this gently uplifting song to be like Whistle While You Work from Snow White – something to hum along to as you do the dishes. Pecknold added that the words actually tell a more painful story about loss of the innocence of youth, being about my experience when I was a kid, you know, like I had my really tight group of friends. But as we grew up from grade school to junior high to high school, everybody just kind of split off, and everybody kind of changed. It was released in 1966 as the group’s debut single for Decca Records. The song reached No. 2 in the UK, No. 4 in the U.S., and No. 1 in Canada, making Los Bravos the first Spanish rock band to have an international hit single.A cover version was released in 1976 by the French all-girl trio La Belle Epoque, which peaked at No. 2 in the UK, and made it to No. 1 in Australia in late 1978. Australian-American singer Rick Springfield also performed a version of the song on his 1982 album, Success Hasn’t Spoiled Me Yet.Since then several other cover versions have appeared in various countries around the world and, in 1980, the English group The Shadows had a hit in Europe with an instrumental version on their ‘Another String Of Hot Hits And More!’ album.
