Tully Road Music #934042. Published by Tully Road Music (A0.1349293). Franz Schubert’s song cycle Die schöne Müllerin (“The Lovely Maid of the Millâ€) was completed in 1823. All 20 songs in the cycle are based on texts by German lyric poet Wilhelm Müller, who would also provide the inspiration for Schubert’s later Winterreise cycle in 1828. The cycle follows the journey of a young wandering miller who falls in love with another miller’s daughter, but his love is ultimately unrequited. In this the eleventh song of the cycle, the young man’s obsession has reached a point of delusion as he brazenly declares to himself that the maiden is “his,†though she has given him almost no reason to feel such confidence in his romantic prospects. He begins lashing out at everything around him for its apparent failure to match or understand his dubious enthusiasm. This arrangement preserves Schubert’s original piano part as well as places the melody prominently in the top soprano voice. The lower voices provide supporting harmonies informed by the accompaniment, moving largely in parallel motion, but with their own counter-melodic value. The arrangement is also available in a version for TTB voices.

J M Starr Music #973074. Published by J M Starr Music (A0.1389486). “Hallelujah†was originally released by Canadian singer/songwriter Leonard Cohen in 1984 on his album Various Positions. This composition, however, is one of the few in history that may be more well-known due to covers of the song than the original version. In 1991, John Cale did a cover of the song that removed the synthesizers, gospel choir, full band, and low, borderline-talking bass voice from Cohen’s original; and replaced it all with a bare-bones piano and tenor voice. It is not difficult to argue that this arrangement of the composition became the definitive version that all future covers would be based on: from Jeff Buckley’s stripped-down guitar and voice 1994 version, to Rufus Wainright’s piano and voice 2001 cover for the soundtrack to the motion picture Shrek, to k.d. lang, the a cappella group Pentatonix, and many, many more.When I first arranged this song in 2010 for my 8th grade SAB choir, I did not know the John Cale version existed; rather, I started by transcribing the Rufus Wainright recording and then made it my own from there. My arrangement is melodically akin to the Wainright, but I added harmonies in various places throughout. Lyric selection was also a choice I had to me, as each version of the song contains a different number of verses. Cohen’s 1984 original had four, and then in 1988 he sang a live version with seven (supposedly he drafted over 80 different verses!). I decided to go with five. This allowed me to structure the song in a way that got feature and give the melody to: a Soloist(s) (verse 1), the Baritones (verse 2), the Altos (verse 3), the Sopranos (verse 4) and then the entire choir (verse 5). Over the years that I have performed this with my students, I couldn’t help myself from rocking out with little bluesy fills and licks in the final choruses, so I decided to write it in. I hope you, your students, and accompanist have fun with that!

When Richard of Chichester (1197-1253) was elected bishop in 1244 King Henry III refused to accept the appointment, favouring another candidate. The king even forbade anyone to house or feed Richard. However, Pope Innocent IV confirmed the appointment, and Richard became Bishop of Chichester in 1245. He was keen to restore order and reverence in the church and was known as an ascetic, displaying frugality and temperance throughout his life. On his deathbed he is said to have recited the prayer for which he is now very well known, Thanks be to Thee, my Lord Jesus Christ. These words became famous after their use in the song Day by day from Stephen Schwartz's musical Godspell (1971).

Trained as an artist, he became an art teacher and later supervisor of art education in the public schools of Sharon, Pennsylvania. An active layman in the Methodist-Episcopal church, DeVenter showed particular skills during annual evangelistic meetings held by the church. Church members urged him to become an evangelist, and after five years of wavering between ministry and his desire to be recognized as an artist, he committed his life to one of evangelism.DeVenter travelled extensively throughout the United States, England, and Scotland, assisted by the singer Winfield Weeden. Although an active hymn-writer, only two hymns remain popular today, one of which is I Surrender All. Given the nature of his call and commitment to ministry, the text of this hymn gains deeper significance.

A few years later, he began making inroads into the Australian country music scene.In 1990, Urban signed with record label EMI in Australia and released his first self-titled album. The song is now regarded as a heart-warming expression of Australian patriotism and nostalgia for home.Its adoption by Qantas in the mid 1990s as the centrepiece of a long-running advertising campaign exposed a new generation of Australians to the song and greatly boosted its popularity. The Qantas campaign became one of the top Australian television campaigns of all time. It has linked together Australians living at home with those travelling or living overseas. Palm Sunday is also known as Passion Sunday, and this piece was written as an opening to the service after the pastor read a Gospel account of Jesus' entry into Jerusalem. However, later in the service is the Passion Reading, and while I had music for that specifically, I felt compelled to acknowledge that after the celebratory acceptance by the populace on the day of His entry into the city, Christ in the garden prayed and contemplated the ordeal He was to endure the next day. This anthem, written for a small choir of SAB, captures the essence of both events and sets up the Passion which is to follow. The part writing varies between unison/octave strength, three part texture, and often moves smoothly from one sonority to another, allowing the voices to blend and the lines to converge into one.
