I composed it for our Thanksgiving Sunday service when our adult choir was just getting established. It is easy to learn and to sing as well as to play for the accompanist. The soprano range is C4 to E5; alto is A3 to E5; bass is C3 to E4. The duration is about 2:04. Although I wrote this piece specifically for Thanksgiving, because we are always to be giving thanks to Him, this composition is really suitable to almost any Christian worship service. In that year the song peaked on the Australian Singles Chart at number 72. But whilst its initial impact was somewhat less than stellar, it has gone on to become one of those songs that is part of the national psyche and is well-known by most Australians.In I still Call Australia Home Peter Allen wrote of his longing, no matter where in the World he might travel, to always return home to Australia, where he could be near his family and friends once again. The song is now regarded as a heart-warming expression of Australian patriotism and nostalgia for home.Its adoption by Qantas in the mid 1990s as the centrepiece of a long-running advertising campaign exposed a new generation of Australians to the song and greatly boosted its popularity. The Qantas campaign became one of the top Australian television campaigns of all time. It has linked together Australians living at home with those travelling or living overseas. The message is this: no person can be summed up by one emotion, and all have the right to be angry, on occasion. Black women have more reason to be angry than a lot of people, and while we shouldn't be consumed by anger, we shouldn't feel like we can't express it, either. Anger results from hurt or fear; the more lyrical middle section alludes to the pain that we've experienced. The song ends with the defiant question: But what if I were? I have kept much of the piano accompaniment the same as David Bowie composed. There is some lovely interplay between the vocal parts which explores the original text a little further, leading to a huge, impressive ending. An essential addition to any programme, this arrangement is a great crowd-pleaser!
