Written by Henry Williams Baker (1821-1877) and titled “The Lord Shall Give His People the Blessing of Peace,” the text of “O God of Love, Give Peace Again” was published in the 1861 edition of the landmark English hymnal, Hymns Ancient and Modern. Baker, who is perhaps best remembered for his hymn “The King of Love My Shepherd Is,” was chairman of the committee that prepared that hymnal. Because war is a constant in the world, Baker's text is always relevant. Stanza 1 is an entreaty that God would “make wars throughout the world to cease.” Stanza 2 asks that God recall his “works of old,” for only by God's hand can peace be given again. Stanza 3 extends this thought by asking “Whom shall we trust but thee, O Lord? Where rest but on thy faithful word?” and noting that “none ever called on Thee in vain.” A fourth verse, omitted in some hymnals, ends on the hopeful note that as saints and angels are bound “in holy love,” so we might also be bound to them and to one another in love and peace. In this original setting of Baker’s text, stanza 1 is sung by unison voices, stanza 2 by unison women, stanza 3 by unison men, and stanza 4 in parts following a recapitulation of the introduction and a modulation to the relative major key. ©Copyright 2024 Todd Marchand / Con Spirito Music (ASCAP). The invocation, “Eternal God and Father, by whose power we are created and by whose love we are redeemed” acknowledges the eternity, creative power, and redeeming love of God. The petition, “Guide and strengthen us by your Spirit, that we may give ourselves to your service, and live this day in love to one another, and live this day in love to you” asks for the aid of the Holy Spirit in service to God and recalls Jesus's words in the Gospel of Matthew, 22:37-39: “And [Jesus] said to him, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’”The conclusion, “through Jesus Christ our Lord,” reflects the mediating role of Jesus Christ the Son, as expressed in I Timothy 2:5 (“For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus”) and Ephesians 2:18 (“For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father”).Appropriate at any time of year, this short anthem of dedication is an ideal offertory selection. ©Copyright 2024 Todd Marchand / Con Spirito Music (ASCAP). Published by Tully Road Music (A0.1348279). “Du bist die Ruh’†(D. 776; Op. 59, No. 3) is one of many Lieder for solo voice and piano written by Franz Schubert (1797-1828), with text by Friedrich Rückert (1788-1866). Although Rückert did not originally give the poem a title, Schubert titled his song after its first line, “Du bist die Ruh’,†and Rückert later titled his poem “Kehr ein bei mir,†or “Stay with me.†With a simple yet beautiful melody, sung with a seemingly uninterrupted legato, Schubert conveys the sense of “calm†and “peace†the poet feels in the companionship of his beloved. So many of the Lieder by 19th-century composers like Schubert and Schumann, chief proponents of the genre, lend themselves well to rearrangement for multiple voices. Here, D. Jason Bishop makes one of the most frequently performed German Lieder available to treble ensembles in an SSA arrangement that preserves both the melodic integrity of the song as well as its original piano accompaniment. All 20 songs in the cycle are based on texts by German lyric poet Wilhelm Müller, who would also provide the inspiration for Schubert’s later Winterreise cycle in 1828. The cycle follows the journey of a young wandering miller who falls in love with another miller’s daughter, but his love is ultimately unrequited. In this the eleventh song of the cycle, the young man’s obsession has reached a point of delusion as he brazenly declares to himself that the maiden is “his,†though she has given him almost no reason to feel such confidence in his romantic prospects. He begins lashing out at everything around him for its apparent failure to match or understand his dubious enthusiasm. This arrangement preserves Schubert’s original piano part as well as places the melody prominently in the top soprano voice. The lower voices provide supporting harmonies informed by the accompaniment, moving largely in parallel motion, but with their own counter-melodic value. The arrangement is also available in a version for TTB voices.

J M Starr Music #973074. Published by J M Starr Music (A0.1389486). “Hallelujah†was originally released by Canadian singer/songwriter Leonard Cohen in 1984 on his album Various Positions. This composition, however, is one of the few in history that may be more well-known due to covers of the song than the original version. In 1991, John Cale did a cover of the song that removed the synthesizers, gospel choir, full band, and low, borderline-talking bass voice from Cohen’s original; and replaced it all with a bare-bones piano and tenor voice. It is not difficult to argue that this arrangement of the composition became the definitive version that all future covers would be based on: from Jeff Buckley’s stripped-down guitar and voice 1994 version, to Rufus Wainright’s piano and voice 2001 cover for the soundtrack to the motion picture Shrek, to k.d. lang, the a cappella group Pentatonix, and many, many more.When I first arranged this song in 2010 for my 8th grade SAB choir, I did not know the John Cale version existed; rather, I started by transcribing the Rufus Wainright recording and then made it my own from there. My arrangement is melodically akin to the Wainright, but I added harmonies in various places throughout. Lyric selection was also a choice I had to me, as each version of the song contains a different number of verses. Cohen’s 1984 original had four, and then in 1988 he sang a live version with seven (supposedly he drafted over 80 different verses!). I decided to go with five. This allowed me to structure the song in a way that got feature and give the melody to: a Soloist(s) (verse 1), the Baritones (verse 2), the Altos (verse 3), the Sopranos (verse 4) and then the entire choir (verse 5). Over the years that I have performed this with my students, I couldn’t help myself from rocking out with little bluesy fills and licks in the final choruses, so I decided to write it in. I hope you, your students, and accompanist have fun with that!
