Published by Maria Thompson Corley (A0.845956). The text to this dramatic, intense song was inspired by the events of the summer of 2020; that said, the trope it addresses goes back for many years. The message is this: no person can be summed up by one emotion, and all have the right to be angry, on occasion. Black women have more reason to be angry than a lot of people, and while we shouldn't be consumed by anger, we shouldn't feel like we can't express it, either. Anger results from hurt or fear; the more lyrical middle section alludes to the pain that we've experienced. The song ends with the defiant question: But what if I were? If you have questions, Raehann Bryce and Jeanne-Minette Cilliers capture this song perfectly in the YouTube video. When commissioning Rejoice and Sing it was our intention not only to have a concert work written for our Youth Chorale but also a work that would be an instrument in teaching Hassidism, for what better way is there to teach Hassidism than through its music. We also wanted to demonstrate that authentic Hassidic music can be arranged in a sophisticated musical manner without having to sacrifice the inherent folk nature and simplicity that is so indicative of Hassidic song. We were most fortunate in securing the talents of Sholom Kalib to carry out this project with us. Dr. Kalib from youth has been steeped with a unique blend of love and understanding of traditional Jewish music and a very high degree of general musicianship. He succeeded in turning these basically simple tunes into a highly inventive musical work without sacrificing the legitimate qualities of the material with which he was working. It is hoped that those using this arrangement will find the same degree of success that we have had in our many performances. We wish to acknowledge with appreciation the following who made this work possible: Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Liebowitz of Dayton, Ohio who sponsored the commissioning of this work; Rabbi Jack Riemer, the board of directors and the members of Beth Abraham Synagogue, Dayton, Ohio for their support and help in many projects of the Youth Chorale; the devoted and hard working members of the Beth Abraham Youth Chorale who gave birth to this work and who, through their many unique accomplishments, have carried the message to their community and to communities throughout the United States that Jewish youth is indeed vibrant and very much alive. Here’s a new SSA choir arrangement of that ever-popular American folksong Shenandoah.  The original song probably has its origins among the French Canadians who traded with Native Americans around the Great Lakes during the sixteenth century. These traders exchanged weapons and tools for animal furs, especially beaver pelts. Paddling their canoes along the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers the traders were well-known for their singing. However, as most of the traders were illiterate, the songs were never written down and went through numerous changes over the years and centuries. In most versions of the song, the lyrics tell of a seafarer, possibly a canoeing fur-trader, who was in love with the daughter of Shenandoah, a Native American Chief who lived in what is now the state of Virginia. Shenandoah was a real person: evidently an individual of commanding presence who lived for over a hundred years. Shenandoah became one of the most popular capstan shanties, a slow song which set a manageable pace for the crew in a heavy and lengthy task. Most versions of the song have a similar couplet at the end of each verse. In some transcriptions, the melody is written out entirely in 4/4 time; others use triple time and some arrangements use a mixture of both. In this version, the lyrics have been selected from different versions of the song. This SSA arrangement for choir and piano is conceived for boy choir or girl choir and within easy technical reach of amateur or school choirs. The top soprano note is high F on the treble staff and the other parts fall well within the usual choral range. Each section of the choir takes the melody at some point. With a running time of 04:00 this piece is enjoyable to sing and hear. It’s an essential addition to your choir’s repertoire.
