Published by Tim Riley (A0.1126300). A short choral work by award-winning British choral composer, Tim Riley (lyrics by John Lovat). In just 15 minutes, this work retells the highly dramatic story of The Newport Rising. Tim Riley specialises in creating compelling works of intermediate difficult for Community Choirs with mixed ability singers. In 1839, 4,000 Chartists marched on Newport in Gwent, Wales, UK. They were part of the Chartist movement, campaigning for better voting right for all. Unarmed, apart from sticks, they arrived at the Westgate Hotel in Newport where they demanded the release of a political prisoner being held there. Local militia opened fire. Twenty two protestors were killed and a further fifty injured. The leaders of the march were sentenced to be 'hanged, drawn and quartered'. Although the march ended in tragedy, most of their demands for universal suffrage are now enshrined in the laws of most democratic societies across the world. The music has been composed in a style that many will find reminiscent of Les Miserable, but there are also touches of Lloyd Webber, Kurt Weill and Gilbert and Sullivan. This arrangement is ideal for community choirs and is a SAAB arrangement. There are two alto parts, but the lower alto part could easily be taken by tenors to give a SATB arrangement. This piece was originally composed and arranged for the Insole Court Community Choir in South Wales (near where the Chartist March took place). In May 2022, the Insole Court Community Choir competed at the Cheltenham Festival for Performing Arts with Tim Riley conducting and won the Musical Theatre section with this work. Since its inception, the band's line-up has included songwriters Rory Macdonald and Calum Macdonald. The current line-up also includes longtime members Malcolm Jones, Iain Bayne, and more recently, Bruce Guthro, and Brian Hurren. To date, the band has released fourteen studio albums, with a number of their songs sung in Scottish Gaelic. Initially formed as a three-piece dance band, which played wedding receptions, the trio's first performance took place at Kelvin Hall, in Glasgow.[1] Runrig's music is often described as a blend of folk and rock music, with the band's lyrics often focusing upon locations, history, politics and people that are unique to Scotland. Songs also make references to agriculture and land conservation. Since 1999, the band has gained attention in Canada, following Nova Scotian singer Bruce Guthro's entry to the band. In 2016, the band announced that it would retire from studio recording after the release of its 14th studio album, The Story.

Ranges Soprano: Middle C (C4) to D5 Alto 1: G3 to C5 Alto 2: G3 to A4 Program Notes Across the Universe was a song written by John Lennon and performed by the Beatles. Lennon turned a negative reaction to Cynthia Lennon’s chatter into an inspired, positive, transcendental meditation-influenced song. It was first released on a charity album and included female backing vocals and a children’s choir. A pared back version was then released on the Beatles Let It Be album. I was inspired by but too late for the Space and Time themed RMIT Music concert, which happened to be on John Lennon’s birthday, and arranged the song for SAA voices, with the melody in an alto-friendly key, matching the CORP attendees at the time. The melody is faithful to the original recording, adds an accompanying “wah-wah†in the second verse, suggestive of the trippy guitar effect, and reinstates the female backing vocals in the third verse.

This wonderful Christmas text is here given a new treatment with an original melody and three-part SSA harmonization. The first verse is for optional solo with a humming choral accompaniment and is in a minor mode. The second verse is tutti with all voices singing the text and is in the parallel major. The final verse incorporates the familiar tune by Gustav Holst. The piece concludes by recalling the original humming motif in the middle voices. This work has comfortable ranges and relatively easy voice-leading so is accessible for a wide variety of choral abilities, but it requires a good ear for the close harmonies. It is also available in SATB and SAB voicings.
