I entered into a composition competition in the Northern Hemisphere summer of 2014. It was a part of something called the F​ estival of Love​ p​resented by Southbank in London, a festival celebrating the enactment of the Same Sex Couple Act in the United Kingdom. This issue is close to my heart as my partner is from the UK and we are as gay as a row of rainbow striped teepees.During the festival, members of the public passing through Southbank Centre were asked to write down a couple of sentences about something they love. Those texts were then posted on the internet and composers were invited over a period of just 24 hours, to set them to music for a cappella female vocal trio ​Ju​ice​. ​​​I was absolutely thrilled that one of my compositions, G​​oing Somewhere​​, was selected for performance.Although I will likely never meet the authors of these texts Ella from Brixton, nor Susie from Hammersmith, (I mean, they didn’t even leave their surnames!) I like to think I have a creative connection to them. Just like Ella, i really enjoy being on my little island-of-me as I walk through the city or sit on a train, the stimulus of the flow of energy and people around me is something I very much enjoy. I also really love Susie was able to find her place in the world at trapeze school. This world is so richly diverse in its opportunities, there’s surely got to be something for everyone.

The bel canto composer Vincenzo Bellini (1801-1835) dedicated his arietta “Vaga luna, che inargenti†to Giluetta Pezzi, an Italian writer. The work is based on an anonymous text and was first published in 1838 by Casa Ricordi with two other songs by Bellini, “Il fervido desiderio†and “Dolente immagine di Fille mia.†Ricordi later included “Vaga luna†in a larger collection of Bellini’s songs published in 1935 to mark the one hundredth anniversary of the composer’s death. “Vaga luna†is a love poem in which the writer yearns to be reunited with his beloved. He repeatedly asks the moon, the “only witness to [his] ardent desire,†to “tell her†of the depth and sincerity of his feelings, and of his hopes that the future will bring them together. This arrangement preserves Bellini’s original piano part and places the melody prominently in the top soprano voice. The lower voices provide supporting harmonies informed by the accompaniment, moving largely in parallel motion, but with their own counter-melodic value. The arrangement is also available in a version for TTB voices.

The two songs used, Oh, Watch the Stars and Great Big Stars, are distinct in their own right. They have been fused together in this movement, borrowing the text from one and using the tune from the other, and modifying one to partner with the other when presented simultaneously. One of her earliest publications was a set of four of Dickinson's poems, entitled Songs from Emily, published in 1975 by Shawnee Press, when her name was Allyson Brown. The two poems in this new work contrast anguish and whimsy, as Dickinson tells of a lightning storm that may be perpetual, and then of how things are learned: Water is taught by thirst.....Birds, by the snow. This piece is approximately 2'45, and is suitable for high school, college, or professional choirs. Allyson B. Wells is a member of BMI. This piece is a 2016 Choral Contest Entry.
