Published by Colin Kirkpatrick Publications (A0.522227). My Song Is Love Unknown is a known best as a hymn by Samuel Crossman, written in 1664. It is predominantly used as a hymn for Good Friday usually in a setting by John Ireland who evidently composed it over lunch one day. This is a completely new SSA setting of Crossman’s wonderful text by Colin Kirkpatrick. In this setting there are opportunities for alto solos though they can be sung tutti if more appropriate. The keyboard part is essential though there is an a capella section in the middle. The highest note in the soprano part is one A flat above the treble staff. This is an accessible arrangement with rich harmonies and soaring melodic lines. It is sure to be a success at Easter occasions. Other SSA titles in this series of three Easter canticles are “Alone Thy goes forth, O Lord (Text by Peter Abelard 1079-1142)†and “A Time to Watch, A time to Pray (Text by John Mason Neale 1818-1866â€. In the audio sample, soprano 1 is played by the flute, soprano 2 by the oboe and alto by the clarinet.

HOW CAN I KEEP FROM SINGING, also known as MY LIFE FLOWS ON IN ENDLESS SONG, was composed by Robert Lowry who fit his lyric to an early American folk tune. First appearing shortly after the American Civil War, the hymn gained popularity over the next century. Pete Seeger revived the hymn in the 1960s, and it has continued to gain in popularity since then. Irish artist, Enya, recorded it in 1991 in her album, Shepherd Moons. This arrangement is for an INTERMEDIATE SAB (soprano, alto, baritone) CHOIR with a piano accompaniment. This haunting and nostalgic melody and harmonies will be welcome in both worship services and secular programs wherever music is loved. A separate sheet for the voices is included along with the score.

This hauntingly beautiful and artistic arrangement of She's Like the Swallow contains the original, very old Newfoundland folk text very rarely used due to it's tragic story line. It is in the genre of beware the uncaring man common in folk songs of Europe which served to teach and warn young girls about the dangers of infatuation. This genre travelled to the United States and Canada in the 1700's. The expression apron low/apron high is a common thread in this genre and refers to being pregnant. She's Like the Swallow tells the tragic tale of a young girl who has fallen in love with, no doubt, a handsome but uncaring man. The story is told from each character's perspective plus an observer (narrator). The girl ultimately creates her own funeral bower of rose petals (ripping them off in desperation as she frantically runs through a garden), lies down on this 'bed of roses' and dies.  You have probably heard this song many times without ever knowing the true meaning due to significant verses left out. You will need a skilled accompanist! The accompaniment utilizes significant word painting throughout to highlight the haunting melody line. Word painting depicts the swallow, uncaring cruelty, desperation, blindly going in circles, anger, church bells and fading away/dying. The conductor is free to take liberties with the tempi and dynamics in order to create a unique interpretation that will resonate with their own choral group. This arrangement of She's Like the Swallow is an exceptional festival or competition piece and one that should be in the repertoire of every skilled women's choir! An original setting, for SSABar choir and piano by Philip Le Bas, of Quiet Peace by Amy Carmichael (1867-1951), who worked as a Christian missionary among the poorest of the poor in India in the first half of the twentieth century. The poem is in the form of a prayer, and the music here has been been kept deliberately simple to perform, so that it canbe sung by a typical church choir. The piano here provides a constantly flowing ritornello throughout the verses, while the voices weave around it in a gentle wave of prayerful reflection. The poet feels an interior quiet peace while all around her there are storms and disquiet, because she knows that her Lord hears her voice. The setting is deliberately simple and undemanding, and it should be sung quietly, meditatively and without rushing. O Lord my heart is all a prayer, But it is silent unto thee; I am too tired to look for words, I rest upon thy sympathy To understand when I am dumb; And well I know thou hearest me. I know thou hearest me because A quiet peace comes down to me, And fills the places where before Weak thoughts were wandering wearily; And deep within me it is calm, Though waves are tossing outwardly. It has been used in film and television programs and known to almost everyone in Britain. Skye (also known as “The Isle of Skyeâ€) is the largest island of the Inner Hebrides. With an area of about 640 square miles, the island is about sixty miles long and lies close to the Scottish mainland.  The boat in the song (“Speed bonny boatâ€) refers to a small sailing ship that in 1746 “carried the lad who was born to be king†to the Isle of Skye. The lad in question was Prince Charles Edward Stuart known affectionately as “Bonnie Prince Charlie.†The song also refers to the Battle of Culloden of April 1746, the last ever battle on British soil, fought between the British Army and the army of Bonnie Prince Charlie.  In June 1746 and disguised as a maid-servant, Charles was secretly transported from the Hebridean island of Benbecula to the more southerly Isle of Skye. This is the event to which the song refers. The Skye Boat Song has its roots in a traditional Gaelic melody. The lyrics in this arrangement are the familiar ones written in the 1870s by Sir Harold Edwin Boulton. This is an easy SSA arrangement, with all vocal parts well within range and difficult leaps avoided. There are no divisi sections or solos, though can obviously create solos if you want. The keyboard part also avoids technical hurdles. Your singers will surely enjoy this joyful melody, with its contrasting verse and attractive counter-melodies. Vocal ranges are Soprano 1: D4 – D5; Soprano 2: D4 - D5; Alto: G3 - D5.

A new arrangement by Philip Le Bas of a thirteenth century French Christmas carol from Provence harmonized by Jean-Baptiste Lully (1632-87, attrib.) and, more famously, by Georges Bizet (1838-75, in his L'Arlesienne Suite of 1872.) In France the melody is still tightly associated with Christmas, and French audiences start singing their own Christmas words whenever they hear the melody (the arranger has heard it himself!) The English translation used here is adapted from a variety of sources. The three kings (or more precisely the magi from St Matthew's gospel) are seen marching towards Bethlehem with their fantastic golden wealth and grandeur. But why are they going to see a low-born baby and why do they worship this child who will die on a cross? The organ sets the scene from the beginning with its marching accompaniment, and the first verse is sung in unison by all three parts. The second begins with a canon, as used by Bizet, and then breaks into harmony. The first section of the third verse is much quieter and legato, sung by the sopranos and altos, using wonderful chromatic harmonies based on another section from Bizet's suite. The lyrics express wonder at the beautiful music heard from the camp of the kings. The second section, sung in differentiated unison then begins to wonder why the kings stoop so low to a baby in a manger. Finally the fourth verse, sung in full harmony, returns to the marching accompaniment and reiterates the amazement of meeting these kings with their mysterious mission. The carol is aimed at parish choirs with limited resources, but a good organist. The melody is well-known, much of it is in unison, and other sections are relatively easy to sing. Care should however should be taken to sing the dotted rhythms accurately - this is what gives the carol its marching character.
