When commissioning Rejoice and Sing it was our intention not only to have a concert work written for our Youth Chorale but also a work that would be an instrument in teaching Hassidism, for what better way is there to teach Hassidism than through its music. We also wanted to demonstrate that authentic Hassidic music can be arranged in a sophisticated musical manner without having to sacrifice the inherent folk nature and simplicity that is so indicative of Hassidic song. We were most fortunate in securing the talents of Sholom Kalib to carry out this project with us. Dr. Kalib from youth has been steeped with a unique blend of love and understanding of traditional Jewish music and a very high degree of general musicianship. He succeeded in turning these basically simple tunes into a highly inventive musical work without sacrificing the legitimate qualities of the material with which he was working. It is hoped that those using this arrangement will find the same degree of success that we have had in our many performances. We wish to acknowledge with appreciation the following who made this work possible: Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Liebowitz of Dayton, Ohio who sponsored the commissioning of this work; Rabbi Jack Riemer, the board of directors and the members of Beth Abraham Synagogue, Dayton, Ohio for their support and help in many projects of the Youth Chorale; the devoted and hard working members of the Beth Abraham Youth Chorale who gave birth to this work and who, through their many unique accomplishments, have carried the message to their community and to communities throughout the United States that Jewish youth is indeed vibrant and very much alive. Here’s a new SSA choir arrangement of that ever-popular American folksong Shenandoah.  The original song probably has its origins among the French Canadians who traded with Native Americans around the Great Lakes during the sixteenth century. These traders exchanged weapons and tools for animal furs, especially beaver pelts. Paddling their canoes along the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers the traders were well-known for their singing. However, as most of the traders were illiterate, the songs were never written down and went through numerous changes over the years and centuries. In most versions of the song, the lyrics tell of a seafarer, possibly a canoeing fur-trader, who was in love with the daughter of Shenandoah, a Native American Chief who lived in what is now the state of Virginia. Shenandoah was a real person: evidently an individual of commanding presence who lived for over a hundred years. Shenandoah became one of the most popular capstan shanties, a slow song which set a manageable pace for the crew in a heavy and lengthy task. Most versions of the song have a similar couplet at the end of each verse. In some transcriptions, the melody is written out entirely in 4/4 time; others use triple time and some arrangements use a mixture of both. In this version, the lyrics have been selected from different versions of the song. This SSA arrangement for choir and piano is conceived for boy choir or girl choir and within easy technical reach of amateur or school choirs. The top soprano note is high F on the treble staff and the other parts fall well within the usual choral range. Each section of the choir takes the melody at some point. With a running time of 04:00 this piece is enjoyable to sing and hear. It’s an essential addition to your choir’s repertoire.

A new composition setting the words of Psalm 133 for three-part (SABar) choir and piano. This cheerful, perhaps even rather idealistic psalm expressing the joy of kindred dwelling in unity has long been used to give voice to a human longing for acceptance by others, whether in a family or a community. Its verses compare this familial unity to the tradition of pouring expensive ointment over the head of visitors. Far from our modern use of oil for lubrication, this is an ancient middle-eastern oil of welcome and washing and feeling part of a community. Dwelling in unity is also compared to cloudy mist which regularly descends on the heights of Mount Hermon in Zion, providing moisture to an otherwise arid land and enabling life across the whole country. This setting is unashamedly playful, popular and romantic, with verses adding a more mysterious, metaphorical quality to the piece, and bringing to expression the deep joy of living in harmony with others..., even if finding this is not always easy. The composition is ideal for use by a parish choir, employing relatively easy part singing with a supportive piano part.Psalm 133: Ecce quam bonum et quam iucundum, habitare fratres in unum. Behold, how good it is, how pleasant, for kindred to dwell in unity. It is like precious ointment upon the beard, running down upon the beard of Aaron; like the dew of Hermon, which falls upon the mountains of Zion. All 20 songs in the cycle are based on texts by German lyric poet Wilhelm Müller, who would also provide the inspiration for Schubert’s later Winterreise cycle in 1828. The cycle follows the journey of a young wandering miller who falls in love with another miller’s daughter, but his love is ultimately unrequited. In this the eleventh song of the cycle, the young man’s obsession has reached a point of delusion as he brazenly declares to himself that the maiden is “his,†though she has given him almost no reason to feel such confidence in his romantic prospects. He begins lashing out at everything around him for its apparent failure to match or understand his dubious enthusiasm. This arrangement preserves Schubert’s original piano part as well as places the melody prominently in the top soprano voice. The lower voices provide supporting harmonies informed by the accompaniment, moving largely in parallel motion, but with their own counter-melodic value. The arrangement is also available in a version for TTB voices.

This short Requiem by Giacomo Puccini (1858–1924) was commissioned by the publisher Giulio Ricordi, who wanted to mark the fourth anniversary (27 January 1905) of the death of Verdi by celebrating the memory of the King of 19th century Italian opera with a work composed by his successor on the opera stages of the world.
