English.The Irish composer Frank Corcoran already won several first prizes, such as for his English-language choral composition 'Eight Haikus' at the International Foundation for Choral Music in 2013. The almost 10-minute work for 4- to 8-part mixed a-cappella choir is based on eight secular texts written by Corcoran himself in the style of the famous Japanese haiku poems. In this shortest lyrical form of world literature which consists of only three lines, the composer born in 1944 uses a large variety of labials, sibilants and plosives and addresses socially relevant topics by means of simple descriptions of nature and seasons in a content-wise and musically figurative and almost mystical language.

It is the effective antiphony between female and male voices, four-part homophonic passages including four bars for two solo sopranos, rich dynamic nuances, staggered entries of the voices in imitation, and sound elements to be performed in an individual loop-like manner that make this sacred choral work special. Japanese.Ivan BožiÄević, born in 1961, drew his inspiration for the eight-part meditation 'Yuku haru ya' from the famous haiku 'Departing Spring' by Matsuo Bashô. The secular a-cappella work for mixed choir is written in Japanese, yet the short text has been transliterated. This makes it easier to avoid the pitfalls of pronunciation as well as master the example words added to the sheet music edition which provide assistance of how to form vowels. Tone repetitions, sustained notes and subtle vocal sound layers make this Zen-like work on the parting of spring a charming, yet manageable piece even for young people. Latin.Almost 40 compositions, half of which written for accompanied and unaccompanied choir, can currently be found in the catalogue of works by the young Polish composer Katarzyna Danel (born in 1992). After winning several national composition prizes, she was awarded the 1st prize of the 13th International Composition Competition 'Musica Sacra Nova' 2016 for Misericordias Domini for eight-part mixed a cappella choir. The complex sacred a cappella choral work is based on the eponymous Gregorian chorale (Psalm 89:2). This Latin choral piece is characterized by three main structures: by aleatoric sound clouds in major pentatonic scales which are emphasized by sustained organum-like notes from the Gregorian chorale melody, on the one hand, by Renaissance-style polyphony combined with modern harmony, on the other hand, and finally, by long static chords merging in space and harmony. A wonderfully mystical, spherical composition which, by means of ad libitum passages marked in the musical text, even gives the performer the opportunity to interpret the piece individually.

Latin.The fact that Naji Hakim's compositional oeuvre is, by his own account, deeply rooted in his personal faith and dedicated to the glory of God and the joy of mankind is evident not only in the text of the sacred choral piece Exultate Deo for eight-part mixed a cappella choir (SSAATTBB). Hakim also manages to capture the textual content of the Latin verses from Psalm 81 by means of musical imagery with various madrigalisms, e.g. with extended melismatic melody lines and distinctive rhythms. This technically demanding sacred choral work was inspired by the Basque folk song Adieu fillette de Bayonne which the Lebanon-born composer already used in the first movement of his concerto for txistu (= Basque wooden flute) and orchestra.Naji Hakim's compositional oeuvre is deeply rooted in his personal faith. German.Die Motette Gegrüßet seist du, Maria komponierte Bertold Hummel am 20. Mai 1993 und widmete sie dem Gedenken seiner tief gläubigen Schwester Erika. Mein Vater, der im selben Jahr auch das Würzburger Brucknerfest mitbegründete, verstand diese Motette bewusst auch als Gruß an Anton Bruckner, dessen berühmtes 7-stimmiges Ave Maria er anklingen lässt: Im ersten Abschnitt wählten beide Komponisten die Gegenüberstellung von Ober- und Unterstimmen, und auf den Namen Jesus zitiert Bertold Hummel die brucknersche Schlusskadenz vor dem Amen. Im Jahr 1997 erstellte er nach dieser Vorlage eine lateinische Version. (C 53543)Der Text dieses sogenannten Englischen Grußes basiert auf den Bibelstellen des Lukas-Evangeliums (Lk 1, 28b, 42) die sich im Laufe der Zeit um Zusätze wie Jesus (14. Jh.) und die Anrufung Mariens (16. Jh.) erweiterten. Im Jahr 1568 erhielt er durch die Aufnahme in das Brevier Pius' V. offiziellen Gebetscharakter. Die hier vertonte deutsche Übersetzung entspricht der seit 1968 gebräuchlichen ökumenischen Fassung. Martin Hummel 2009.

Latin.As a singing teacher, choir director and not least as a passionate professional choir singer, Irina Rebhuna is perfectly familiar with the possibilities of the human voice. And so it is hardly surprising that the Latvian musician born in 1988 has devoted herself especially to the composition of vocal music. Her sacred choral work Libera me, Domine for mixed a cappella choir (SSAATTBB) won the special prize for the 'best composition for 4-6 voices' at the International Composition Competition 'Musica Sacra Nova' 2016. This church music gem, in which the eponymous Gregorian chorale is intonated by one of the (two) bass baritone sections at the beginning – over a musical tapestry woven by the remaining voices - and taken up again by all tenors at the end, is ideal for ambitious amateur choirs. The idea behind this work, says the composer, is 'the human reflection on the uncertain – on death, on Judgment Day or on what is inexplicable to us. Such as humility, excitement, fear,and atonement. The chant ends without ending, there is no solution. Life goes on because we ask the following question again and again: What will happen next?'.
