The first movement, Fanfares To Fallen Heroes, is a tribute to the brave firemen, policemen and rescue workers who tirelessly and fearlessly risked and sacrificed their lives in order to save the lives of others. The movement is permeated with fanfare motives that reflect both the bravery displayed and the danger that these people faced. The second movement, Elegy To The Innocent, is a tribute to all the innocent victims and their loved ones who have suffered at the hands of the terrorists. The outer sections have a dirge-like rhythm underpinning a sorrowful melody. The middle section contrasts the dirge by giving a sense of comfort to all that have suffered. The third movement, Justice, represents the struggle and resolve of the United States of America and its allies to eliminate terrorism. Battle motives alternate with a heroic theme throughout the movement. The last movement, Prayer For Peace, represents a hope that all the people of the world can achieve the tolerance and understanding we need to live in harmony and in a civilized manner. The chaconne form is used to represent the uniting of voices as the prayer grows in intensity from beginning to end. The interpretation of this adage is that one always wants what someone else has instead of accepting one’s own uniqueness. During the movement, counterpoint is used to depict one instrument copying another. Towards the middle of the movement, tuba 2 eventually realizes its independence and states a bold melody of its own. The movement ends with the euphonium 1 playing its melody alone with pauses between the phrases as if looking over its shoulder wondering where the other musicians are. II. Absence makes the heart grow fonder. This setting represents a growing love despite the emptiness of being apart. Hollow intervals of fourths and fifths representing longing, occur at the beginning and end. A short love duet between two instruments occurs in the middle. III. Time flies when you are having fun. A rollicking six-eight meter is used to represent a children’s game of tag. There is a lot of alternation of short phrases as if one instrument is trying to tag the other and the other is trying to avoid being tagged. The dissonance and short accented notes represent taunting. IV. Every cloud has a silver lining. This movement is a prayer-like setting with alternation of minor and major harmonies representing the cloud and the silver lining respectively. V. He who hesitates is lost. This movement is very rhythmic and syncopated with the instruments alternating phrases in the manner of a call and response. It calls for split-second precision between the performers, therefore representing the adage. VI. A rolling stone gathers no moss. The last movement is a perpetual motion in a rolling six-eight meter. The musical ideas are very chromatic with the exception of main theme that appears first as a solo melody, then as several instruments together, and later as instruments in imitation. Towards the end, there are a few brief pauses and low accented notes as a life of activity has a few bumps along the way.

This can be used as a great teaching tool for low brass educators and studio professors or teachers. You could also feature your strongest low brass 'valvers' during a Concert Band, or Brass Band Concert or as part of a pre-concert welcoming small ensemble. Either way it is a fun little piece that teaches and entertains.

Ciacona (original key of F minor for organ) has been beautifully arranged for Tuba/Euphonium Quartet in G minor by Mark LaFratta. It is likely Pachelbel’s second most famous work, after the Kanon in D. As is typical for a Ciacona (Chaconne), there is a short simple tune in triple meter over a repeating bass ostinato that provides a vehicle for variation, ornamentation, and melodic invention and is somewhat similar to a passacaglia. There is a passage or two that even have hints of Bach's great Passacaglia, which didn't appear for many years in the future.
Pachelbel's Ciacona states an opening theme followed by 22 variations, the last of which is an almost exact repeat of the opening theme.
This fantastic 8-minute arrangement is appropriate for advanced performers and is scored for 2 Euphoniums and 2 Tubas.

Tuba Blues 2 is a new work in a “jazzy blues/swing” style for Tuba Quartet (2 Euphoniums and 2 Tubas) plus a Drum Set.
This work follows the great success of the first Tuba Blues by Henry Wolking.
About 5 1/2 minutes in length for advanced performers. Euph 1 & 2 have improvised solos and all the other parts get their share of the limelight in other ways. There is a set of parts for 1st and 2nd Euphonium parts with the solos written out for those needing a bit of help with improvising. An optional drum kit part fills in for a wonderful character piece on your next concert.
