In this arrangement I focused on the rhythmic aspect of the piece, trying to pack maximum punch while still keeping it easy enough to play fast! I recommend placing all of the octaves in the left hand with a flat hand to keep the lower range from getting too muddy. For lever harp or pedal harp Some fingerings included. Programme Notes: Icarus Also Flew takes its title from the first line of the poem Failing and Flying by Jack Gilbert. He is referring to the classical myth of Daedalus and Icarus, an inventive father and son who bravely escape from their imprisonment in a tower by collecting the disposed feathers of seabirds, then fashion wings out of them and fly away. While the story is often treated as a morality tale--listen to your elders, don’t get cocky like the young man, Icarus, who, in such an understandable state of elation, ascended too close to the sun thus causing the wings to melt and his tumbling to his Mediterranean death--what Jack Gilbert reminds us is how regardless of one’s failure, the sheer transcendental experience of mortal flight remains glorious and unforgettable. Icarus’s fall was not into a legacy of disdain and oblivion, but in truth, he had come to the end of his triumph. This piece was the first of a series I composed during the Covid-19 quarantine conditions of 2020, to serve as potential contemporary preludes for each of Ludwig van Beethoven’s nine symphonies--his two hundred and fiftieth anniversary was this year!--though they can all stand on their own on any program. The connection, in this case, is with his celebrated fifth symphony in C minor--the Fate symphony, as it is commonly known. I’ll let the listener find their own connections.About the Composer:Benjamin Sajo (b. 1988) is a Canadian composer of contemporary classical music, as well as an educator. Since developing a fiercely independent creative voice upon the completion of his studies at Western (2010) and McGill Universities (2013), he continues to find inspiration from the intersection of mythology, art, and nature upon the contemporary human experience. In 2019, he released his premiere album of original music, The Great War Sextet: Canadian War Poetry with Trombone & Strings, with support from the Ontario Arts Council. He is a member of SOCAN and the League of Canadian Composers.

Published by Luis Anjos Teixeira (A0.889431). Blind Mary was composed by O`Carolan, it is an irresistible enchanting little piece. In this file there are 3 versions for 3 different sizes of harps. One in F for a big harp, one in Eb for medium size and the one in F for a little 3 oct. lap harp a very similar one to the one that usually O`Carolan used to perform. The melodic bass played with the left hand demands a little bit of coordination but the arrangement is focused in the main melody and is very easy to perform in all this 3 versions. The piece is so beautiful that I recommend it to be played always twice in a row. Some interpretation symbols are used as a performance suggestion. Most of the score is left to the interpretation of the artists involved, particularly the use of fingering. Feel Free to apply in this piece the Art and technic that expresses entirely your individual skills and taste. Have fun! The score was written on Finale. The sound file is the version in Eb for a medium size diatonic harp, it was produced with samplers from Garritan and conceived merely as an audio support for the presentation of the score. Known as „The Last Irish Bard, he is an Honored and Beloved Irish composer. He became an itinerante harpist after losing his eyesight to smallpox. Extremely talented, he composed a vast repertoire of music and left also a well known number of real good stories to tell due to his rich temperament, social caracter and spicy sense of humor. This is the same tune as elsewhere in my catalog, only this is arranged for a smaller harp; one with 33 strings the lowest of which is F, such as the Caswell Gaelic. Written by Turlough O'Carolan, the blind Irish harper of the late 17th and early 18th century. He is credited with over 200 tunes and is regarded as the greatest composer of music for the Celtic Harp. He spent over 40 years wandering all over Ireland before his death in 1738. There are over a dozen places in Ireland called Cashel, though it is believed that the one to which this tune refers is the one in County Roscommon.

Perhaps it was an anonymous Cistercian Monk, or King John IV of Portugal (1604-1656), or John Reading (1645-1692) or John Francis Wade (1711-1786). The first published version of it was in 1751 by John Francis Wade, a Scottish scholar of plainchant so he is often given credit as its composer. This trio can be performed as is or with the matching Duet version. In Harp I both hands play the melody. Harp II has melody and some accompaniment. Harp III has accompaniment and the most notes. The story goes that when Turlough was quite old he went to his doctor, who told him that if he didn't give up the whiskey he couldn't be assured of seeing another year. So Turlough did what any sane man would do: he got a second opinion. He consulted Dr. John Stafford who wrote him a prescription (in those days it was called a receipt) for whiskey, and it return O'Carolan wrote this. .

The inspiration for my Missa Pro Defunctis (2018) was Fauré's Requiem in which he ignored the fire and brimstone text of the Dies irae and Tuba mirum in the Sequence of the Requiem Mass. And consequently he created a work that is peaceful, tranquil and uplifting. I'd like to think of death in that way.So, I proceeded by taking the exact text that Fauré used in his work, and instead of a large chorus and full orchestra I decided to do a chamber version. It is scored for SATB (single voices), flute, clarinet, string quartet, double bass and harp.The movements, as in the Fauré, are:1. Introit and Requiem2. Offertory3. Santus 4. Pie Jesu5. Agnus Dei6. Libera me7. In paradisumThe entire work has a duration of ca. 27 minutes.Missa Pro Defunctis (2018) is dedicated to the residents in the Protestant Cemetery in Rome.

The lyrics tell of a nostalgic person missing his homeland and wishing he could move back to Carrickfergus. In this arrangement, the beautiful melody is augmented by flowing arpeggiated interludes representing the sound of waves from the sea. The Multi-level pieces were initially arranged in an A Version. When that was completed, it was then simplified to form the B Version. The B Version has thinner lines and allows more time for placing the fingers. The purpose is to permit harpists of various playing levels to enjoy performing together. In the key of G, the melody is divided evenly between parts. Dynamics are clearly marked.
