Published by Afghan Press Music for the Harp (A0.797527). A wistful, dreamy piece, to be played freely and with emotion. There are many repeating patterns for the left and right hands, making it a lot easier to play than it may first appear. In the middle contrasting section, the melody and accompaniment are more distinct, separated by the right and left hands. The final section combines the first and middle sections. Key of F, some large chords, lowest note is the F (#33 on ost 36-string harps), no accidentals. This selection was featured in a short film, The Harpist.

This is a traditional Irish tune in 6/8 march time. A little reminiscent of Brian Boru's march. It is in G major, but one of the F's is natural. This is clearly marked in the part. Part one can be mixed with only part 3 or 2, so if there are only two harpists take your pick. The harp 1 part can also be played alone. Part 3 is the easiest and for part 2 one needs to be at least of intermediate ability. .

All tunes were typeset to fit exactly on two facing pages to eliminate any page turns within a piece. If desired, the length of each piece can be lengthened by repeating some sections; section divisions are indicated by light double bar lines. Many people are unaccustomed to hearing tunes based on modes other than the Ionian or Aeolian. Therefore, you may find some of the melodic contours or harmonies to be unusual, unexpected, or even uncomfortable. There are only three lever changes in this entire book – and they all occur on the last note of the piece. Guitar chords are included so that the melody may be played by any C instrument, accompanied by chords on harp, lute, guitar, or keyboard. Also, the transcribed harp part can be played on any keyboard instrument with only minoradjustments.Dynamics, fingering, and metronome markings are provided throughout as an aid to performance. However, the harper should use whatever dynamics, fingerings, and tempos suit them, no matter what this book indicates! The maximum range needed for each piece is only 26 strings (3.5 octaves) from low C to high G. Therefore, it can be played on a small harp encompassing that range. Simply treat the C two octaves below middle C as the lowest C on your harp and adjust the octaves accordingly. Ignore any 8va indications and shorten glissandos as needed.

I used to play them in the key of C years ago, but on revisiting my old arrangements I preferred the key of F. There are no lever changes but there are plenty of full rolled chords. So an intermediate level of playing is required.I have added dynamics but they can be changed if you like. Both songs should not be played too fast. Metronome speeds are an indication only. Play with feeling!

There are some ornaments, and alternate versions of the melody, and a somewhat older or classical feel to the arrangement. It could be an elegant slower piece in the middle of a slightly faster set - many people say the tune affects them quite emotionally, so I tried to write to enhance that.
