Here is another collection of beautiful pieces, similar to Mr. Mahan's first collection of French pieces entitled French Impressions, with the impressionistic harmonies. These pieces can be played on lever or pedal harp, but not on small harps of 26 strings or less. The melodies are lovely. Intermediate level, left hand is supportive of right hand melodies and usually contains ascending arpeggios. Carousel and Moonlight on the Seine are quite different than the others in the collection, one having the driving 3/4 rhythm and the other having a decidedly modal feel. Only a few of the thirteen pieces in the collection reflect the heartbreak and grief that followed, but, as Carol writes in her introduction, many musical friends encouraged her to try to keep playing and composing. Several of the pieces are dedicated to these friends, and many celebrate the beauty of trees or snow or even sleep. All the pieces are written in keys requiring no more than one sharp, and all are playable on full-sized lever harp or pedal harp. This is a lesser known tune by the great O'Carolan. It is in a-minor. I have added a slow introduction before the actual planxty which is in a 6/8 time. There are no lever changes but the slow air requires a lot of expression and the faster part requires a fair bit of speed. There are quite a few ornamentations in there that need to come out clearly. So even though a lot of fingering has been added this is not for the very beginner! Around grade 4 or advanced grade 3. .
