Bass Trombone Music by Henry Wolking is a four-movement Sonata for Bass Trombone & Piano written in 2007 for Professor Donn Schaefer of the University of Utah. The work was premiered at the 2008 Eastern Trombone Workshop by Professor Schaefer.The 1st movement entitled Roger is about Roger Miller the country singer.Movement II is after Lou Harrison a mystic classical composer. Mr. Wolking's English Setter Simon is the star of movement III and Thelonius Monk's Blue Monk legendary jazz composition is the inspiration for movement IV.This work is written for virtuoso performers and can be a main work on a recital or concert. Professor Wolking's Sonata is a brilliant piece of music and should become a standard of the repertoire over the course of time.

The original title of the work was Romance and Allegro and is one of the first major works of importance for the valve horn. In arranging this work for Bass Trombone, Mr. Morales-Matos has transposed the key down into C major. This exquisite piece of music is about nine minutes in length and suitable for advanced performers.

Stewart who helped with the composer's trans-Atlantic voyage to North America as the special guest of the World's Fair in St. Louis.The 5-minute work has become one of the most popular solos in the trombone repertoire with its beautiful phrases and expressive feel.This great music has been beautifully arranged for Bass Trombone and Piano by Wade Goodwin.The recording below is performed by the arranger Wade Goodwin.

Originally titled Sospiri d'Amour, this instrumental miniature, Sospiri (Sighs), Opus 70 was originally intended as a companion to Salut d'Amour. Elgar composed this heartfelt work in 1914 for string orchestra, harp, and organ, just before the outbreak of WWI. It is a bleak adagio of thoughtful intensity that he dedicated as a tribute to W.H. Reed, a dear friend, and the Concertmaster of the London Symphony. The work has been described most beautifully by Michael Kennedy who wrote, It is, though short, a major work of grave beauty, an epitome of Elgar’s ability to express nostalgic regret.Ralph Sauer has arranged this beautiful work for Bass Trombone and Piano as an homage to the great English master. The work is about 5 minutes in length and appropriate for advanced performers.

Here is a brief description of this very fine new work, The Secret of Ben Søgen for Bass Trombone and Piano by the composer, Elizabeth Raum: I’ve always been fascinated by the Nordic heroes that appear in comic books and video games like Thor or Odin. Years ago, I wrote a concerto for tuba called The Legend of Heimdall inspired by Scandinavian folklore, and for this new work for bass trombone, I found myself drawn to the Danish mythical character, Ben Søgen. My concept was to conjure up a video game champion who goes through various adventures to achieve his final quest. However, the Secret of Ben Søgen is that he doesn’t exist. I made him up. My original title was Bone Quest, a pun on the word, trombone, combined with Quest but that didn’t evoke the image I wanted so I decided to create a character from the Danish translation of Bone Quest. Thus Ben Søgen. The Hero Bass Trombonist has a theme stated in the beginning, and this motif continues through a variety of backgrounds (or adventures) before the final major key of his goal being achieved. The work is about 7 minutes in length and appropriate for advanced performers. This work has been edited for bass trombone by Gordon Cherry.

Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792231). John Frith began composing the `Sonata for Bass Trombone and Piano` for Stephen Fissel of the Seattle Symphony Orchestra in 2008. Originally it was intended to write only a single movement. When Mr. Fissel requested more did the idea of a three movement Sonata begin to take shape. In order to create a cohesive piece, Mr. Frith decided to use the opening Trombone figure of F-E-F as the thread to create a thematic unity within the three movement structure. The Piano introduction to the slow second movement bears this `motto` in reverse (EFE) and this is duly adopted by the Trombone and continues to be evident throughout the movement. The third movement, likewise, uses (EFE) but this time beginning with the Trombone. The composer remembers describing this movement to Stephen Fissel as a manic Waltz and it does,indeed, reach fever-pitch by the Coda. The relationship between the two instruments in this Sonata is never that of soloist and accompanist, rather as a conversation between two equal players, each in partnership with the composer’s ideas, committed to creating something of beauty.The work is written for very advanced performers and is about 14 minutes in length.
