JB Linear #6088061. Published by JB Linear (A0.582172). Cecile Chaminade was one of the pioneers of women composers in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Her Havanaise Op. 57 was written for piano and published in 1905. The name, Havanaise, has to do with the people and their music in Havana, Cuba. The piece uses a habanera / tango rhythm throughout and frequently is written with three parts, making it ideal for a string trio arrangement (violin, viola, and 'cello).

Schumann Serenade (2007) for string trio was written for the Rosetta Trio and is dedicated to Fordand Susan Schumann with great appreciation. (Thus, the title refers primarily to the dedicatees,rather than composer Robert Schumann.)The work begins with a slow introduction that sets forth much of the musical material for the restof the work. A faster, “flowing†section tries to establish itself but continues to break down into runsand trilling, finally leading to a brief, dancing scherzo. Following the scherzo, a more developedversion of the opening introduction returns before a quiet coda closes the work.In this final section, referencing the name of the dedicatees, recognizable fragments are heard from awork of Robert Schumann: “Der Dichter Sprichtâ€, the evocative final movement from his pianosuite Kinderszenen, op. 15 (1838). Many small allusions (rhythms, harmonies, and melodicfragments) to this piano work have occurred throughout the earlier sections of the trio, but finallythey are allowed to come to the foreground in the closing minutes.

This work, written in 1838, is one of his most well known pieces for piano. He described the inspiration for the Scenes from Childhood†in a letter to his wife as follows: “ I often seemed like a child to you – in short, I felt as if I were in pinafores again†..I wrote thirty quaint little things, about twelve of which I have selected and called Scenes from Childhoodâ€. This charming arrangement for a trio for violin, viola and cello is accessible to intermediate students, amateurs and professionals. Donkey Riding is a traditional work song or sea shanty originally sung in Canada, Scotland and the North Eastern United States. It has also become popular as a children's song. The earliest written record of the song dates to 1857. It is generally assumed agreed that the donkey of the song title is a reference to the steam donkey, a kind of general-purpose steam engine. In this arrangement, each of the melody instruments takes a turn at playing a simple variation on the tune while the piano tinkles gracefully around the harmonies. The sound sample is an electronic preview. Phil Beaman #5012669. Published by Phil Beaman (A0.844679). Maggiolata is the Italian name of an ancient Spring Festival celebrated on May 1st, hence the subtitle Song of May. Jeno Hubay, Head of the Violin Dept at the Budapest Academy of Music, wrote this piece to be as light and celebratory as a perfect spring day. My arrangement abridges and slightly simplifies this classical standard which was originally written for Viola and Piano. I reduced it from 6 1/2 minutes to 2 1/2 minutes by focusing on the recapitulation of the main theme but also included opening and closing cadenzas. I have scored it for a String Octet; 1 Violin Solo, accompanied by 4 Violins, 2 Violas, 1 Cello. The one Violin has the melody throughout. The other Violins and Violas have occasional countermelody, but mostly pulse ensemble rich chords while the Cello sits on pedal tones. Overall, it creates a rich, balanced string sound. Fairly easy, but sounds more advanced with its full chords and the dramatic interpretation markings I have added.9 page score, 1 page parts; 17 pages total5 minutes with repeat
