Christmas,Holiday,Religious,Sacred,Traditional. 15 pages. Zene Strings #700966. Published by Zene Strings (A0.1096999). Good King Wenceslas is a Christmas carol that tells a story of a Bohemian king who goes on a journey, braving harsh winter weather, to give alms to a poor peasant on the Feast of Stephen (December 26, the Second Day of Christmas). This arrangement is a gentler, flowing arrangement of the famous carol, and features the cello on the second verse of the song. Published by Homco/Crinion (A0.1503814). Little Altar Boy (Little Holy Child) is a song that was made famous by Andy Williams in his 1965 Merry Christmas album. The story is about a man who goes to church and asks the holy and innocent altar boy to pray for him. In this String Trio arrangement, the melancholy melody is given totally to the cello in its bass/tenor range. The violin actually plays an upper-register obbligato part. This is the perfect Christmas Song in which to showcase your cellist.

String Trio Cello,Viola,Violin - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1324384 Composed by Traditional. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Chamber,Christian,Christmas,Holiday,Traditional. 6 pages. Jmsgu3 #912582. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1324384). God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen is one of the oldest and most popular Christmas carols from 16th-century England. The earliest known printed edition was published in 1760. The song has been known by different names throughout history, including God Bless You, Merry Gentlemen and God Rest Ye, Merry Christians. The lyrics convey the message of comfort and joy, celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ and the tidings of salvation from Satan's power. The song has been featured in various cultural works, including Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol. Despite claims that the music originated in the 15th century, evidence supporting this is lacking, and the earliest known source documenting the existence of the carol dates to the mid-18th century. The song is widely misunderstood as being addressed to merry gentlemen, but the phrase God rest ye merry actually means God make you mighty or God keep you strong. The melody is more than just a Christmas song; it conveys a strong religious message and serves as a rallying song to show the world the true meaning of Christmas.

Jmsgu3 #913362. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1325134). O Little Town of Bethlehem is a beloved Christmas carol with an exciting history. It was written by Phillips Brooks in 1868 for the Sunday school children at his Philadelphia parish, Holy Trinity Church, following a pilgrimage to Bethlehem in 1865. The hymn beautifully describes the little town asleep on the December night. It gracefully modulates from a description of Christmas into examining the meaning of Christmas, encouraging charity, faith, and the coming of Christ into the human heart. The hymn is generally sung to its original tune, St. Louis by Louis H. Redner in the United States, and to Forest Green by Ralph Vaughan Williams in the United Kingdom, Canada, and Ireland. The hymn has continued to be a favorite for many people as they celebrate Christmas.

Jmsgu3 #915260. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1327200). The Christmas carol Angels We Have Heard on High is sung to the hymn Gloria, a traditional French carol. The phrase Gloria in Excelsis Deo is a memorable feature of the chorus, where the o of Gloria is fluidly sustained through 16 notes of a rising and falling melismatic. The carol commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ as narrated in the Gospel of Luke, specifically the scene outside Bethlehem where shepherds encounter many angels singing and praising the newborn child. The Gloria is believed to have inspired the chorus in Angels We Have Heard on High, it is considered one of the earliest known Christmas hymns. The melody uses the effect of a refrain and is one of the few texts that congregations sing regularly in Latin: Gloria in excelsis Deo!. The phrase Gloria has a rich history, with reports indicating that in 129 A.D., Pope Telesphorus ordained that the Gloria be sung at the Christmas Eve midnight mass. The melody has been popularized worldwide and has become a holiday standard.

Jmsgu3 #912628. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1324430). Greensleeves is a traditional English folk song that has several interesting facts associated with it:Origin: The song's origin is uncertain, and there is no consensus on who composed it. It has been attributed to Henry VIII, the King of England, but this association is considered erroneous, and the song is more likely to be Elizabethan in origin.Christmas Carol: The tune of Greensleeves is used for the classic Christmas carol What Child Is This?Lyrics: The song's lyrics are about a painful romantic problem and include what some historians view as subtly salacious content. The lyrics deal with a spurned lover accusing Lady Greensleeves of casting him off discourteously despite his love for her. The song's scandalous twist is hidden in its title, and its exact meaning has been debated for centuries.Cultural References: The tune was used as the slow march of the London Trained Bands in the 16th and 17th centuries. It was adopted as the quick march of the 7th (City of London) Battalion London Regiment during World War I. Additionally, the tune has been referenced in literature, such as in Shakespeare's The Merry Wives of Windsor.Popularity: In some parts of the world, the Greensleeves tune is famous as a standard chime for ice cream vans. These facts make Greensleeves a fascinating and culturally significant piece of music with a rich history and diverse interpretations.

Jmsgu3 #913314. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1325092). Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming is a Christmas carol with a rich history and deep theological significance. It is most commonly translated from the original German hymn Es ist ein Ros entsprungen. The hymn emphasizes the royal genealogy of Jesus and Christian messianic prophecies, describing a rose sprouting from the stem of the Tree of Jesse, symbolizing the descent of Jesus from Jesse of Bethlehem, the father of King David. The hymn has been set to music by various composers, with the familiar harmonization by Michael Praetorius dating back to the early 17th century. The English translation by Theodore Baker, Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming, was written in 1894 and has been widely used in English-language hymnals. The hymn's enduring appeal lies in its theological depth, musical beauty, and historical significance, making it a cherished part of the Christmas tradition for many.

Score and parts. 12 pages. Jmsgu3 #3555135. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549856). Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme (Awake, the Voice is calling us) from Cantata BWV 140. Duration: ca. 4:00, Score: 6 pages, Program this for church services during the Easter season, weddings, or as a recital encore.Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme (Awake, the Voice is calling us) also known as: Sleepers Awake Bach composed his church cantata Wachet auf (BWV 140) as part of his second annual cantata cycle covering the entire annual church calendar. It is based on the hymn of the same name by Philipp Nicolai (1599). The hymn text covers the readings for the 27th Sunday after Trinity. Bach designed the cantata in seven movements, setting the stanzas in various forms. Among these forms are the chorale fantasia, the chorale prelude, and a four-part chorale. He casts the new lyrics as recitatives – in a manner similar to the opera. Fourth Movement Bach writes the fourth movement, Zion hört die Wächter singen (Zion hears the watchmen singing), in the style of a chorale prelude with the chorale phrases performed as a strict cantus firmus. The phrases seem to enter at times erratically against the famous lyrical melody. The violins play this melody in unison as a foil against the cantus phrases. The violin melody is so independent and complete that when the cantus melody appears it catches the listener at times totally off-guard. Bach later transcribed this movement for organ (BWV 645). This transcription became No. 1 of the Six Schübler Chorales. Bach Overview First of all, Johann Sebastian Bach is maybe the greatest composer in music history. Certainly, he was prolific. As a result, everyone has heard of his works. Furthermore, these works number well over a thousand. It seems like people are probably most familiar with the instrumental works such as the Brandenburg Concertos, and the Goldberg Variations. But, similarly famous are such noteworthy works as the Well-Tempered Clavier, the Musical Offering, and certainly the Art of Fugue. Seems like his most famous vocal works include the most noteworthy Mass in B Minor. Also, most noteworthy, though, are the St. John Passion, and certainly the Christmas Oratorio. History Bach came from a long line of musicians and above all, composers. Consequently, he, first of all, pursued a career as a church organist. So as a result, he gained employment in various Protestant churches in Germany. For a while, he worked as a court musician in Weimar and Köthen. Here he probably developed his organ style and likewise his chamber music style. Eventually, he, therefore, gained an appointment as Cantor of St. Thomas in Leipzig. Here he worked until difficulties with his employer ultimately drove him away. The King of Poland finally appointed him as court composer. Style It seems like Bach created a fascinating new international style. He synthesized elements of the most noteworthy European music ideas into his new style. Even more, this new style was probably his synthesis of European musical rhythm and form. Furthermore, he demonstrated a complete mastery of counterpoint and motivic development. His sense of harmonic organization probably propelled him to the top. Revival Mendelssohn conducted a Bach revival in the nineteenth century. His effort probably helped to re-familiarize the public with the magnitude of Bach’s works. During this period, scholars published many noteworthy Bach biographies. Moreover, Wolfgang Schmieder published the BWV (Bach Werke Verzeichnis). As a result, this is now the official catalog of his entire artistic output. The BWV number allows us to locate a work in the catalog. Sometimes scholars will simply use an S (Schmieder) as an abbreviation for BWV. Voyager
