After his death, the members of the Beatles brought out a version as a single in 1996 which quickly won a gold record and reached number 4 in the UK Charts, and number 11 in USA.Younger players may be more familiar with the Tom Odell cover of this lovely song, chosen as the John Lewis Christmas Advert Music in 2014.Although I arranged this for Capriccio Quartet who play professionally at weddings and other events, I am marketing it for the Intermediate category. The slow speed and easy key for strings make this an enjoyable song for younger players. As usual, most of my double stopping includes an open string, or a note that can be left out if it is easier. The opening cello melody can be dropped an octave without going below the low viola bass notes. Likewise the first violin can drop the octave at bars 24/25 and also at bars 36/37.Take as many bows as make you comfortable. My bowing is only a guide. Perhaps the octave leaps are difficult to slur effectively. I suggest just playing the higher or lower octave as gentle quavers.I hope you have fun playing this song. Published by Helen Marple-Horvat (A0.749223). https://youtu.be/RYUY5j3rGmE Mercy was a massive hit for Duffy in 2008, topping the UK charts for five weeks, earning a grammy nomination and establishing her career as an artist. It is one of my favourite songs and I really loved arranging this one! The video shows my arrangement of Mercy for String Quartet but without voice, to give you an idea. Many things about it are similar to this version for voice and quartet but the voice carries the tune so it is not so demanding for the first violin. There are some excerpts to listen to in the 30 second sample of the quartet with my daughter singing. This is more difficult to play than some of my other arrangements as it is very syncopated and it is important to feel the stresses on the off beats. As far as possible I have written these as down bows which I hope will help the players to lean into the groove! The pizzicato baseline will need to be prominent, but the inner parts very light, and played near the end of the bow so that the singer can be heard. I have added lyrics to some of the lines to help with the rhythms. I hope you have as much fun playing this one as I did arranging it. I arrange songs for a wedding quartet and this is often chosen by the bride and groom for their special day. This arrangement is 4 mins long and in B flat major. It is not the easiest of keys for strings but neither is it the hardest. It needs lots of vibrato, especially for the first violin, and subtlety from the inner parts to make sure they are heard but do not overpower the melody. The excerpt is from the instrumental section in which I exercised a little creativity! I would think players would need to be ABRSM Grade 7 to be able to play this well, but I could be wrong! I love the harmonic possibilities, especially the false relations in all of them! Down the years I enjoyed singing this one in choral groups, and also sharing it with pupils in choirs. Included are various harmonisations of the wonderful tune, as well as some rhythmic surprises. If you would like to watch a video of a professional quartet playing my arrangement on Youtube, look up my channel by typing Skinny Black Dogs, Capriccio Quartet, Coventry Carol. They play it at a very fast speed, feeling it as one in a bar. Approx 140 bpm. However, I have also included a 30 second clip of some of the Sibelius Score at a much slower speed of 100 bpm. I think that the tempo is a matter of personal preference. The dissonance is more pronounced and beautiful at the slower speed, but the unexpected extra bars are more fun at a faster speed. At bar 68, the climactic section the cellist should be playing arco! There was a mistake in the score and I have now corrected it! This is a good key for strings, and the double stopping always includes an open string. Although advanced players can make use of higher positions, younger players can use open strings which will not detract from this ancient style! I hope you enjoy playing this arrangement. I have re-arranged this carol for three violins instead of viola, as a flexible possibility. This version is almost identical, though Violin 3 sometimes goes up an octave and passes on the lower notes to the cellist who gets some double stopping! The quartet play it beautifully, but it could also be played by a very young quartet because most of the he double stopping includes one note on an open string. Grade 5 ABRSM could manage it, and possible Grade 3! It will sound mediaeval with the open strings ringing out. The key is a very easy one for strings. However there are a few surprises in the counting so watch out! It isn’t always obvious, but with a few rehearsals you will have a fresh take on a very old carol. It would be great for a string orchestra, or a quartet in an end of term carol service. If you perform it, take a video, even if on a phone, and send it to me on Facebook.
