Johannes Brahms is best known for his symphonies, concerti and large scale chamber works, but his catalog of over 200 Lieder shows he was also a master of small forms and intimate expression. Wiegenlied (Lullaby), included in this set of arrangements for string quartet, is one of the best known and most loved melodies ever written. His original gently syncopated accompaniment, reproduced here, makes an elegant backdrop for it. The set opens with Sapphische Ode (Sapphic Ode), whose title is not directly connected to the ancient Greek poet Sappho of Lesbos, but refers to the verse form of the poem Brahms set, that bears her name. The melody resembles the theme of the slow movement from Brahms’s violin concerto, written a few years earlier. Following it is Wenn du nur zuweilen lächelst (If you only sometimes smile), a fine example of the mood of longing and melancholy that Brahms often depicted in both songs and instrumental music. The music moves back and forth between major and minor, and the flowing 9/8 meter occasionally varies the 3+3+3 pulse to 2+2+2+3 in a natural-seeming way.Brahms never wrote an opera, but Von ewiger Liebe (Of Eternal Love), which builds from a somber opening, through a stormy middle section to a powerful climax, gives us a sense of what a Brahms operatic scene, in this case a love duet, might have sounded like. That was not the usual quintet of a piano and string quartet. The Schubert Trout quintet was my model: piano, violin, viola, cello and double bass. I titled that work, Piano Quintet … apple strudel (1988). At that time I was a huge fan of the Entenmann’s Apple Strudel. I imagined the piano being encased/surrounded by the four string instruments. My first real piano quintet was written for the Formosa Quartet and pianist Tammy Lum. They premiered the work at Nyack College during the spring of 1988. My current piano quintet (no. 2) is titled Pq2 … (2014). It is a work in five movements. I. Moderato … Trio II. Adagio … III. Tsiaj 1 … Allegro IV. Tsiaj 2 … Prestissimo! V. Adagio What’s tsiaj? The work, scored for seven string instruments †2 violins, 2 violas, 2 cellos & contrabass, is in seven sections: four movements with three interludes in between.Moderato, Humble Vale Interlude IFunk ScherzoInterlude IIBossa nova Interlude III Perpetuo motoWhen Mark Ludwig, Director of the Terezin Chamber Music Foundation, told me that Seven Steps would be premiered at the Hancock Shaker Village, I thought it would be most appropriate to use a Shaker tune as a source for this work.The work begins with Humble Vale. Humble Vale is part of the Hancock Hymnal: 1850 compiled by Deborah Rentz Moore.The most obvious element in this beautiful melody is the predominance of the pentatonic mode. The Funk Scherzo movement is a dissertation on pentatonic subsets: major seconds, minor thirds and perfect fourths. The Bossa nova movement, although not pentatonic melodically, is full of chords derived pentatonically: chords stacked in fourths, for example. The last movement, Perpetuo moto, is most definitely pentatonic in its theme: an incessant repeating figure with explosive pentatonic flurries of major seconds, minor thirds and perfect fourths.In between the four movements I have inserted three interludes. Interlude I is an interlocking pair of waltzing pentatonic melodies for two violins. Interlude II is a solemn march on an Fâ€sharp pedal. Interlude III is a quasiâ€canonic descending scale that resolves into a big Gâ€flat major chord. It is my intention that these interludes provide a smooth and slithery connection from one movement into the next. Enjoy!!!The work is dedicated to Miles Davis. His 1963 LP/CD Seven Steps To Heaven is a seminal recording for all music lovers. It made a huge impression on me when I was a teenager in São Paulo, Brazil. Years later I found an album of the same work with Jenny Lin on the Steinway & Sons label. I was so impressed with her work on the Mompou that I hired her to record my Twenty-nine Fireflies for solo piano (1977-2002). I have subsequently hired her to record other solo piano works of mine: For Morton Feldman (2017), Préludes ... Hommage à C.D. (2020), Via Crucis ... Hommage à Franz Liszt (2020) and Huit Épigraphes (2021). So when it came time to write my 16th string quartet, I decided that Beethoven wasn't as inspiring as Shostakovich was when I wrote SQ15 ... Hommage à DSCH (2021). So, instead I thought maybe I should write a tribute to Mompou for my 16th string quartet.  SQ16 ... Música Callada (2022) is in 6 movements. 1. Adagio - Moderato 2. It was written by George Harrison and is one of his best-known compositions. Harrison wrote the song in early 1969 at the country house of his friend Eric Clapton, where Harrison had chosen to play truant for the day to avoid attending a meeting at the Beatles' Apple Corps organisation.The Beatles recorded Here Comes the Sun at London's EMI Studios in the summer of 1969. It has thirteen short continuous movements, one for each note of the tone row and a resolution of the row into an adagio movement in C major. The movements are written in a time signature beginning with one beat to a bar and ending in 13 beats to a bar until the final section of the last movement. The number of bars for each movement is in multiples of 13, then 14 and onwards to 25. The harmonic language is dictated by the combinations of notes in the original row combining with a row with its inversions and retrogrades begun from the first note of each new section. The sections may be briefly summarised as follows:- 1. Adagio A basic statement of the row with its inversion and retrograde 2. Con brio A rhythmic miniature scherzo and trio 3. Allegretto Dynamic contrasts using pizzicato and glissando 4. Andante piacevole e mesto Aduet between the violins with accompaniment from the viola and 'cello 5. Agitato An atmospheric spiccato section interrupted by foot-stamping 6. Andante languido A barcarolle-like section with passages of col legno 7. Allegro A rhythmic section contrasted by passages in harmonics 8. Tempo di tango presto The tango is apt to slip into many of the composer's pieces, even where nominally 12-tone, and is never remotely serious! 9. Andante pastorale Another atmospheric section but more relaxed 10. Allegro molto A scherzando section using rhythmic retrogrades 11. Allegretto The music begins to pull into feeling of tonality around C 12. Allegro moderato This process continues with tremolandi and glissandi searching for the way to a diatonic C major 13. It is amazing that the work was conceived thirty years ago!!! Originally, it was just a 32-bar jazz tune I performed every Sunday night with the Moon Unit at the 1369 Jazz Club in Cambridge, Massachusetts, 1980-1984. The string quartet version, although written for the Kronos Quartet, was premiered at Concert X by the Composers in Red Sneakers in Sanders Theater, Cambridge, Massachusetts, on July 21, 1983. The Red Sneakers String Quartet comprised of Thal Aylward, Melissa Howe, Frank Grimes and Sandy Kiefer. Richard Buell reported in the Boston Globe a few days later that the doleful Morango ... almost a tango got a lot of mileage out of a stubborn, almost unchanging cello line and the elaborations above it. The original program note read, Last summer in Vermont I met Gustavo Moretto, an Argentine composer, who taught me the finer and more beautiful aspects of the Tango. In my modest way, as someone looking in from the outside, I created Morango ... almost a tango - a bastardized version of the 'real thing.' Morango ... is also intrinsically connected to Kate Moran, a sometimes painter ... to whom it is dedicated. The work is played con sordino throughout. I hope the sirens next door don't intrude too much. But then again, John Cage would be delighted. Eventually, the Kronos got around to performing it on tour in Europe in 1986. When they played it as an encore in Italy at the American Academy in Rome, Mya Tannenbaum of the Corriere Della Sera wrote, Non sono mancati i bis. Un richiamo al sex appeal del vecchio tango da parte di un giovane «premio Roma», Tom Lee. Soon after, back in the States, the Kronos performed it at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York. John Rockwell wrote in the New York Times, ... a soulfully beautiful score by Thomas Oboe Lee. Three months later the Kronos recorded it on their Nonesuch CD, White Man Sleeps. Many other string quartets, both here and abroad, have since added the work to their repertory. The Lydian String Quartet, especially, have taken the work on their concert tours in the United States, Europe and the former Soviet Union. It appears on a CD recorded by the Lyds in Moscow on MCA Classics. As interest in the work grew, other ensembles have requested arrangements of Morango ... There are now three other versions of the work: one for big band jazz ensemble by Ken Schaphorst, another for string orchestra commissioned by Aram Gharabekian and Sinfonova, and the third for violin and piano commissioned by the Paul Chou-Paul Salerni Duo. Of the string orchestra version, Richard Dyer of the Boston Globe wrote, Lee's piece, Morango ... almost a tango, is a transcription of atmospheric and elegant music originally composed for string quartet; it is as sultry as Faith Domergue in a film noir, and it steams.
