ViolinVagabond Music #745332. Published by ViolinVagabond Music (A0.1145015). Settle into the groove with this tasteful interpretation of a modal jazz staple for the modern string quartet!! I didn’t seek to re-invent the wheel with this arrangement, but rather to capture some of its signature jazz combo swagger while fitting the signature lines & licks into string-friendly voicings. I did add an original intro & outro, which will give a bit more pizazz to your live performance than the fade out from Herbie’s original album version. The full chart includes written-out solos for each member of the quartet. I highly encourage improvising your own solos if you are comfortable, or even vamping one or more of the solo sections to really stretch out as you watch your next cocktail hour gig fly by! For a shorter (and significantly more lame…) performance, you can instead cut one or more of the solo sections from letter C thru F to save time. This arrangement makes use of modern extended string techniques in order to create a rhythmic foundation without the need for additional rhythm instruments, including chopping and ghost notes. If you are unfamiliar with these concepts, various resources exist all over the internet to aid you in your quest towards having better time. If you use neither, you may feel as if something is missing in your life that you just can’t pinpoint. Don’t worry, I’ll pinpoint it for you: BACKBEATS. One way or another, you need them. And I’ve given you multiple options here so if you can’t make this chart groove that’s on you… Performance time - approximately 5:00 for the full chart as written. As mentioned above, solo sections can be repeated with improv or cut without requiring significant chart changes, to adjust to the needs of your specific performance. This instrumental setting of Bon Iver's "Holocene" will be an excellent addition to your quartet's gig book. The first violin gracefully drifts in and out of Justin Vernon's haunting melodies, while role of the acoustic guitar ostinato from the album version is filled by a 2-part pizzicato figure between Violin 2 and Viola, enabling your string quartet to perform this chart without the need for any additional musicians or tracks.
Extended techniques including chopping and artificial harmonics are used to emulate the unique production style of Bon Iver's recording. While not the flashiest or most technically dazzling chart in my catalog, this tune will give your ensemble a great opportunity to vibe out, settle into the groove, and provide pleasant ambience to events such as:

This arrangement of Crazy Little Thing Called Love by Queen for String Quartet can also be performed with a String Trio, since the 2nd Violin part is optional. Your listeners will love this toe-tapping tune, so much so that you might get an air-guitarist joining you on the side! While the 1st Violin gets most of the melody on this, there is a pretty sweet Viola solo part, so your violist can channel their inner Brian May. 2nd Violin has some counterpoint, and Cello has a smooth walking bass line. And everybody swings! One thing that sets my arrangements apart from others is that I fit all of my parts on 2 sheets of music. This makes it so the songs can fit into a binder, without the need for flipping pages! Another great thing is that I include cue lines on each part, so that every player in the ensemble can see one other person’s music at the same time. This is so amazingly useful and has saved countless performances in the past. If someone skips a beat or misses a measure, you can now see where they are and reconnect! This also helps with sight-reading and keeping the group together in general.
