I originally arranged it for Voice with Quartet accompaniment in F, with my daughter, Alice Rose Wild, who sings on the live recording. You can hear our recording of the whole song on my channel if you type in Skinny Black Dogs, Capriccio Quartet, ‘All I want for Christmas’ into Youtube. More recently I have created this version for String Quartet in the key of G. At the moment I have only the Sibelius computer score, and hope to record it with Capriccio Quartet once the covid pandemic is at an end. Suspend your disbelief!Why choose my Arrangement?The arrangement is in a great key for strings and most of the double stopping includes an open string. In one or two places the double stopping is a bit more tricky, so for younger players it would be better perhaps to miss out one of the notes, or to play them consecutively.The Intro.For the first violinist I include two versions of the intro and recommend that the quartet listen to the original, or to Alice’s recording for speed and performance tips. It is quite difficult to get the computer to do it musically, so the video intro is only intended as a rough guide. One of the enclosed options is intended as a rehearsal version, and has the lyrics to help. I have bowed it to include lots of downbows, and recovery of bows, which will help the other members to follow. The tricky sextuplet and triplet ornament at bar 10 can be omitted altogether. Simply pause on the ‘C’ and then recover the downbow for the next bar.I also include two versions of the violin two and viola parts. One is on two pages as a smaller font, and one on three pages with a larger font.For cellists who are a bit daunted by the solo at letter A , simply play the fourth position semi breve Gs at bar 12 and at bars 13 and 14 too, and revert to the original score at bar 15. ie Six semibreve Gs. Perhaps a harmonic D at bar 15 would be easier than a shift at this point, and then join in unison with the rest of the band.The song moves between a straight crotchet pulse and lots of syncopated lines. This will be difficult to read on paper, but I always recommend listening to the song many times and then doing it by ear, using the notes on the page as a guide. Try not to play them too literally.PrintoutsPages 1 - 10 are for Look Inside Options only.Pages 11 - 28 includes all PartsPage 29 onwards is the optional Score for rehearsals. The vocal version is proving popular, but for a standard quartet Wedding and Events repertoire I hope that people will enjoy this arrangement. As with my other arrangements, I like to have each instrument play a portion of the melody/vocal line throughout the piece, but I will point out that the melodic lines for the cello and viola are in a high register, so knowing how to play in extended positions will be needed. It was there when I first first heard his Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5, with soprano solo and eight cellos. The memory of that music will forever haunt me. I then recently discovered through a CD box set recorded by the Cuarteto Latinoamericano that Villa-Lobos wrote 17 string quartets. I guess he wanted to beat the number of string quartets that Beethoven wrote which is 16. So this being my 17th string quartet I wanted to pay homage to Villa-Lobos and dedicate this work to him, in memoriam. The title of the article was These Sculptures Changed What Art Could Be, Then Changed Themselves. It described how the five works on display were very different from what they looked like back in the late 1960's when they were exhibited at MOMA, the Guggenheim, Leo Castelli, and other museums. One of them, Expanded Expansion, for example was originally off-white and it is now in an orange-brown amber color. I immediately was fascinated and went on a research spree on her and her work. On Amazon I bought a huge two-volume book of all her paintings and sculptures. And I also bought a book of diaries that she kept from 1955 to 1970. I then decided that I should write a string quartet inspired by her work. The work is in eight movements, each one with a title from her sculptural works. 1. Oomamaboomba, 1965 ... Moderato 2. Interlude I: C-Clamp Bues. 1965 ... Largo 3. Metronomic Irregularity, 1966 ... Presto TRIO 4. Interlude II: Addendum, 1967 ... Adagio 5. Repetition Nineteen III, 1968 ... Poco andantino 6. She blithely went on her way, completely ignoring them***. It is such an iconic photo that I was inspired to write my 19th string quartet in honor of Miss Orkin's photograph. After some research I discovered that the girl in the photograph has a made-up name of Jinx Allen. Her real name is Ninalee Craig. Ruth Orkin befriended this young American compatriot and ended shooting a ton of photographs of her in that city. I decided that these exquisite photographs would become the titles of the movements for the string quartet. I. American Girl in Italy II. Jinx in Goggles III. Jinx @ AMEX IV. Treasure Tours V. Jinx Staring VI. Jinx with Statue From a Wikipedia entry on Jinx Allen: Many interpret the photograph as one of harassment and chauvinism. In 2014, Ninalee Craig said: At no time was I unhappy or harassed in Europe. The photograph is not a symbol of harassment. It's a symbol of a woman having an absolutely wonderful time! In this case, I composed a Suite of 5 Argentinian Dances, with their own rhythmic patterns, signature changes, tempo, and musical language, in a serialist framework. The purpose was to showcase the intersection between Western Classical Music and my Argentinian and Latin American culture and influence. Opus Argentino is my first ever string quartet and is an invitation for people to get to know where I come from and  embrace my country’s culture.

The string quartet holds pride of place in Bologne de Saint-Georges instrumental works, with three sets of six works each. With neat but surely unintentional symmetry these quartets include his first and last instrumental works, the Six quatuors à cordes, Op.1, and the Six Quatuors concertans, Op.15. The present quartets fall midway between these two publications. Composed in 1777 (according to Gabriel Banat, the best and most recent of Saint-Georges’ biographers) the Six Quartetto concertans were issued two years later in a breathtakingly inaccurate edition by Durieu in Paris. Given the unusually high number of errors and inconsistencies in Durieu’s edition it seems most unlikely that Saint-Georges was involved in its preparation. No other edition of the quartets is known although a second printing of the set using the same plates was made ca 1782. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (A0.869862). Dmitri Shostakovich wrote 15 string quartets. As a tribute to him and his glorious music, my 15th string quartet is dedicated to his memory. The first movement takes on a theme that Dmitri Shostakovich has used many times in his music, especially in his String Quartet No. 8 - the DSCH theme. Bach actually came up with the idea. In his Art of the Fugue, the letters in his name Bach is translated to the musical notes: Bb, A, C and B-natural. Dmitri did the same, but in his case the notes are D, Eb, C and B. My first movement begins with the 2nd violin playing an inversion of the DSCH theme: Eb, D, B and C. Then the 1st violin enters with the original DSCH, which is eventually followed by the viola playing the same DSCH theme, but submerged in a fog of harmony. The cello plays a pedal D … for Dimitri. The idea for the second movement Serenade came from his SQ15, second movement, where the 2nd violin and the viola play a fortissimo quadruple stop pizzicati. I coopted his 8-note chord but used only 6 of them for the ostinato pattern in my movement. Incidentally, the publisher forgot to add an alto clef for the viola part … The third movement in the Nocturne is a Largo in 5/4 that features the cello and the 1st violin. It has nothing to do with DSCH’s music, except for the title. The fourth movement is Intermezzo. Both this title and the previous Nocturne are from his SQ15. But the motivic idea is actually something I stole from his SQ4, third movement. In his case it is a repeated C and G in the 2nd violin and viola in 4/4 meter. I kept the repeated G in the 2nd violin, but I altered the viola part and changed the meter to 3/4. It doesn’t sound like DSCH at all. The fifth movement theme is also an idea I grabbed from his SQ4, second movement: A dyad of F and Ab in 3/4, repeated, in an andante movement. I used the same dyad, F and Ab, but slowed it down to a 6/4 and titled it Trauer-Marsch as DSCH did for the fifth movement of his SQ15. The idea for my sixth movement is stolen from DSCH’s SQ2, third movement, which is titled Valse. The 2nd violin and viola play a persistent pah-pah of the usual Oom-pah-pah of a fast waltz. That is what I used (not an uncommon device in all waltzes), but I altered the top line to something more interesting that just repeating the same notes. His waltz begins in Eb minor, but mine is in the relative major of Gb. The last movement is the Epilogue, as it is in DSCH’s SQ15. The only thing I borrowed from his epilogue is the opening chord of an Eb minor triad. The music that follows has nothing to do with DSCH. Mine is a slow, evolving set of chord progressions that sounds like a dirge: gliding through the waters on a gondola in the canals of Venice on its way to Isola di San Michele.

As it is such a popular hit I was surprised to find that the original was by Bob Dylan, from the album ‘Time out of Mind’ from 1997, and also that it has been covered many times by different artists.In writing this for string quartet, I have given the melody to viola and cello as well as first violin, and mostly made use of the harmony in Adele’s version of the song, adding a few dissonances to spice it up a bit. I also include an expansive string interlude section with some double stopping for the viola.The performance is by Capriccio Quartet, who play for weddings, seasonal events and parties in England.Although this quartet is suitable for professional musicians, young players will also be able to manage it with a few adaptations. Firstly, the key of G is a an easy one for strings.The cellist will need to be able to play in fourth position, but only on the A string, and the tempo is slow. There is some double stopping for the viola in the string interlude, but it includes an open G, which can also be left out altogether without losing much harmonic tension. The bowing is a guide only, so take as many bows as make you feel comfortable and use the open strings wherever you need.Let me know if you perform it, and send me any recordings as I love to hear them, especially those from young players. We hear it in shops, supermarkets, and radio stations all over the country for the weeks in the run up to the celebrations, as it is part of a popular compilation of hits. It was a Christmas number one in 1973 and stayed there for nine weeks. Although it was recorded in New York it is not so well known in the USA which is a surprise to me. I have always loved it because of the unusual chord progressions at the end of the Chorus, and because Noddy Holder is from the West Midlands where I was born and bred. We don’t have too many famous people from around there!It is important to keep a steady tempo but it doesn’t need to be as fast as the original (120 bpm) However It *is* in the same key as the original and follows the structure exactly, so it may be possible to play along with it before coming to rehearsal, which is always helpful. It is useful to feel the syncopation that way. We planned to record this last March but that was before Lockdown!The tune is shared between first violin, viola and cello. The second violinist needs to keep a rock steady pulse. Although it is suitable for a professional quartet to play, and the first violinist often plays the tune up an octave, I feel that it is easy enough for a quartet of Grade 5 ABRSM to play with a few modifications such as playing open strings. The cellist will need to be able to play in fourth position and to stretch for the F sharps on the C string, but feel free to change the octaves or use pizzicato in the bass part if it makes things easier.The bowing is a guide only, based on the rehearsal with Capriccio Quartet, so all players should take as many bows as they need in order to feel comfortable. His mother, Drahomíra, was aligned with paganism and ultimately had Ludmila murdered to gain power. Upon becoming Duke at 18, Wenceslas sought to promote Christianity and was known for his charitable acts, especially towards the poor and marginalized. His reign was marked by efforts to end religious conflicts and to build churches, including part of what is now St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague.
