This song’s form is simple, but it has really fun vocal line solos for all the instruments, snazzy synthesizer solos featured by the violins, and a great beat, which the cello and viola hold down.  The arrangement starts with an intro using only the top 3 voices, imitating the feel of the original music video which starts with the four Abba singers singing acapella.  Following the intro, viola and cello team up playing the “Take a Chance†rhythmic figure, emulating the chanted words from the original track, while the violins play the melody in duet form. The viola takes the melody on the first half of the verse, while the cello hugs the bass line and violins hang out on discreet descants and counter melodies. The cello then wails the melody on the second half of the verse, with a brief section in tenor clef.  The song repeats and fades out on the chorus.  Bowings and rehearsal letters are included for ease of sight-reading, ideal for gigging performances. This version has been arranged a half step down (the original song was written in B Major, and I adjusted the key to B-flat Major so that it’s a bit friendlier to string players).

This is a „take another crossroad version of Mozart´s famous Little Night Music, written by Austrian Arranger and Composer Augustin Lehfuss – a wild and funny arrangement for string quartet in a unusual latin style. Everybody knows the triad motive at the beginning of Mozart´s original composition, which reappears several times throughout the piece. The idea was, that the performing quartet, while playing the original work of Mozart – tired of always playing the same classical music – „turns left any time the characteristic motive appears, and switches to the latin version which is sold here. Then it runs wild for a while and enjoys Mozart´s theme in a crazy latin style, bevor, finally disciplinized again, finishes in Mozart´s original ending of his „Little Night Music. From the „turn out of Mozart´s original piece until the original ending the latin arrangement lasts about three minutes . For this arrangement starts with the famous triad motive, it can also be played as a stand alone version, though recognizable for the audience. There are phrasings and dynamics indicated in this arrangement, but every quartet should feel free to choose their own phrasings. This arrangement of 'White Christmas’ for string quartet stays true to the spirit of the original Bing Crosby version with respect both melody and harmony. Beginning with those unmistakeable 4 chords in the upper strings, the ‘cello takes the majority of the vocal line, but all three other parts are also given a chance to shine with melody, counter melody and harmony by turns. With high positions in both violin parts and up to 4th position plus harmonics for the lower strings, the challenge in this arrangement is found in the technical and musical interpretation of this iconic song, and is a great play for ensembles of advanced intermediate standard. Note from the arranger: All my arrangements for strings are conceived specifically with the aim of writing interesting parts for all players. Published by Cypress Publishing (A0.1447120). Soon after moving to Vienna in 1781, Mozart wrote what turned out to be his last, and finest, three serenades for wind ensemble. He himself arranged the one in c minor, Köchel 388, for string quintet (2 violins, 2 violas and cello), and that version is known as K. 406. Most of the serenade in B-Flat Major, K 361, sometimes called Gran Partita or Serenade for 13 Instruments, was also arranged for the same quintet combination, apparently by someone else, with the movements divided up between Quintets No. 6 and 7 in the second volume of the standard Peters Edition set of parts for Mozart’s string quintets. The remaining serenade, K. 375, is appearing in a string quintet arrangement for the first time that I know of. While it does not have the dramatic intensity of K. 388/406 or the grand sweep of K. 361, it is a worthy companion to the other two works. He composed it “carefully”, as he explained in a letter to his father, and the piece is full of striking details that show this. In the first movement, the second subject is surprisingly in a dark minor key, and the development is based on it. But it does not appear in the recapitulation, replaced instead by a new major key theme. The first of the two minuets also has a brooding trio in minor. The heart of the work is the Adagio, one of Mozart’s great slow movements, and it should be better known. The long-spun overlapping melodies work particularly well for strings. The finale starts as a conventional Rondo, but breaks off into an extended fugal section (again starting in a minor key!) that gives the movement weight and power beyond a typical formula rondo. This arrangement transposes the original E-Flat Major to D Major, to take advantage of string sonority while making some of the passage work lie better for the instruments. Score and parts follow the current convention of listing the composer’s middle name as Amadeus, even though he did not favor it: His only recorded use was a letter he signed Wolfgangus Amadeus Mozartus, clearly intended as a joke. He preferred the Italian or French versions, Amadeo or Amadé, of his German given name Gottlieb (which he also rarely if ever used). We hear it in shops, supermarkets, and radio stations all over the country for the weeks in the run up to the celebrations, as it is part of a popular compilation of hits. It was a Christmas number one in 1973 and stayed there for nine weeks. Although it was recorded in New York it is not so well known in the USA which is a surprise to me. I have always loved it because of the unusual chord progressions at the end of the Chorus, and because Noddy Holder is from the West Midlands where I was born and bred. We don’t have too many famous people from around there!It is important to keep a steady tempo but it doesn’t need to be as fast as the original (120 bpm) However It *is* in the same key as the original and follows the structure exactly, so it may be possible to play along with it before coming to rehearsal, which is always helpful. It is useful to feel the syncopation that way. We planned to record this last March but that was before Lockdown!The tune is shared between first violin, viola and cello. The second violinist needs to keep a rock steady pulse. Although it is suitable for a professional quartet to play, and the first violinist often plays the tune up an octave, I feel that it is easy enough for a quartet of Grade 5 ABRSM to play with a few modifications such as playing open strings. The cellist will need to be able to play in fourth position and to stretch for the F sharps on the C string, but feel free to change the octaves or use pizzicato in the bass part if it makes things easier.The bowing is a guide only, based on the rehearsal with Capriccio Quartet, so all players should take as many bows as they need in order to feel comfortable. As it is such a popular hit I was surprised to find that the original was by Bob Dylan, from the album ‘Time out of Mind’ from 1997, and also that it has been covered many times by different artists.In writing this for string quartet, I have given the melody to viola and cello as well as first violin, and mostly made use of the harmony in Adele’s version of the song, adding a few dissonances to spice it up a bit. I also include an expansive string interlude section with some double stopping for the viola.The performance is by Capriccio Quartet, who play for weddings, seasonal events and parties in England.Although this quartet is suitable for professional musicians, young players will also be able to manage it with a few adaptations. Firstly, the key of G is a an easy one for strings.The cellist will need to be able to play in fourth position, but only on the A string, and the tempo is slow. There is some double stopping for the viola in the string interlude, but it includes an open G, which can also be left out altogether without losing much harmonic tension. The bowing is a guide only, so take as many bows as make you feel comfortable and use the open strings wherever you need.Let me know if you perform it, and send me any recordings as I love to hear them, especially those from young players.
