German.In addition to the two magnificent string quartet parodies 'Repertorium für Militärmusik Minimax' [Repertory for military music 'Minimax'] (ED 6735) and 'Ouvertüre zum Fliegenden Holländer, wie sie eine schlechte Kurkapelle morgens um 7 am Brunnen vom Blatt spielt' [Overture of 'The Flying Dutchman' as played at sight by a bad spa orchestra at the well at 7 in the morning] (ED 8106), 'Uncanny Invitation' is another merry work by Paul Hindemith, a 'Song with Full Orchestra Accompaniment in the Style of Richard Strauss. Text taken from a Beekeeper’s Journal. For soprano and quartet. Strauss' song 'Heimliche Aufforderung' [Secret Invitation] probably was behind the corruption of the title. The text, slightly changed by Hindemith, from the magazine 'Die Biene und ihre Zucht' [Bees and how to keep them] from 1924 inspired Hindemith to make this creation, provided with the invitation 'am Bienenstand (d. h. an der Donauquelle) … jung zu baden' [to bathe young … at the apiary (i.e. at the source of the Danube)], to not let oneself be carried away by the ageing Strauss, but by contemporary music.

Today it is best known in the brilliant orchestration by Hector Berlioz. Our full length quartet version, transposed to a more string-friendly key, aims to capture the verve and dash of the original. Somewhat technically challenging when played at full tempo.CYPRESS PUBLISHING is pleased to be the imprint for arrangements for string ensemble by Stephen Levintow. He is a free lance professional violist and violinist specializing in chamber music, who began making string quartet and trio arrangements for wedding, party and corporate events, to expand the repertory or to improve on existing versions. Selections include unusual pieces by both familiar and lesser-known composers, plus standard classical and popular favorites. The goal is to produce high-quality, musically satisfying arrangements faithful to the composer’s original material, yet sight-readable in most cases by working professionals or intermediate to advanced students. The full range of normal string technique is employed, while avoiding unnecessary technical complexity. Melodic material is distributed throughout the four voices where appropriate, to maintain listener and performer interest. Schott Music - Digital #Q6235. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q6235). String Quartet No. 5 consists of two contrasting movements. The first movement, being present, immediately leads to an atmosphere of high emotional tension. The prevailing atmospheric elements of the music are dramatic and passionate, alternating with each other like a kaleidoscope. In contrast to that, a second theme is intoned three times – an invitation, a memory of the existence of another world, a light-house which illuminates the twilight in which we live so often. But this invitation remains unheard. The first movement concludes with dissonances in the upper register – a cry of utter desperation. The second movement, so distant ... yet so near, is the calm, unhurried vocal section of the quartet. A forgiving, loving look at a world tortured by grief and contradictions. Gradually, the singing becomes more personal, more emotional and more dramatic. The rhythmic figure of a funeral march in the recapitulation of the second movement is a gesture of loss. Eventually, the quartet loses itself in an atmosphere of light-filled grief. Pēteris Vask.
