Whilst being a punk tune, this piece always struck me as being particularly Stravinsky/Prokofievesque. Laden with multiple time signatures, shifting tonality and angular melodic ideas, all with a sense of fun and fiery energy made it a perfect candidate to be arranged for an orchestral setting.(I’ve started with a string quartet but I’d actually love to do a symphonic version as well)

Published by Greg Woodward (A0.1460359). My third string quartet is a playful and melodic work, encompassing a wide range of styles and moods with a high degree of thematic unity. The joyful, dance-like character of the opening eventually disintegrates into a moment of sorrow, before a pensive, introspective section with elements of Herrmann and Shostakovich. A grand crescendo leads to a huge A major chord (a reference to the Beatles' A Day In The Life) that gradually becomes more dissonant as it progresses underneath a constant high A pedal point in the first violin. A chant-like section featuring open fifths follows, before a driving, angular section in 5/4. This recurs a few times interspersed with some musical episodes before ushering in a majestic transformation of the earlier chant-like section. After this runs its course and dies out, a final section revisits the dance-like energy of the first section which borrows thematic material from all through the piece before speeding into a final jazzy major sixth pizzacato chord.This would make a good concert piece.Visit my YouTube page for more performances, arrangements and compositions.

Howard (A0.998853). 'Klee's Sketchbook' is based on the work of the Swiss-born artist Paul Klee. The piece is graphically notated throughout, referring explicitly to Klee's various notions of taking a 'line on a walk'. In this work, lines are presented in a variety of labelled forms and combinations, including the active, static (passive), angular and shadowing. The score indicates the basic outline of instrumental contours on staves, thus always implying certain pitches. However, many elements, such as dynamics and durations (and exact pitches), are left for the performer to determine. Handel’s great set of 12 Concerti grossi (= Grand Concertos, in the first edition) op. 6 are somehow a bit related in spirit, through their power and diversity, with Beethoven’s string quartets. Therefore, here they are arranged for the more ‘abstract’ and ‘timeless’ medium of the string quartet, allowing also for an addition to the repertoire of the respective ensembles. Articulation, tempo and dynamics indications were specified or added where needed, and all the trills were indicated to start with the upper auxiliary note, not only according to the Baroque performance practice but also fitting to the melodic contour. Concerto grosso in G minor, op. 6 no. 6: 1. Largo affettuoso – dark and tragic; 2. A tempo giusto – a severe, angular and peculiar fugue; 3. Musette (Larghetto) – lengthy, pastoral and elegiac, with a rather agitated middle section; 4. Allegro – energetic, in the style of Vivaldi; 5. Allegro – dance-like but serious and with some brusque gestures. Total duration 13 min 30 sec. The mp3 audio clip is the second movement. Performing Rights Organization: SOCAN.

Published by James S Sclater (A0.961282). This four-movement work was premiered in 2016 by the Fondren Quartet. Movement 1, Morning Song, is an angular study in instrumental interplay. The 3rd movement, Graveyard Hoedown, is a type of Devil's Bluegrass dance. The elegy for quiet heroes honors those who risked their lives during WWII to hide Jews from the Nazis. The elegy for Jerzy Popieluszko is a memorial to the Polish Catholic priest who was murdered by the authorities for his outspokenness during the tumult in that country. If time is a factor, this work can be successfully done by just playing the first three movements, or perhaps performing movements 1, 4, and 3 in that order. This is serious, reflective music with rewards for both performers and audience. For advance players.

Score and parts. 8 pages. Greg Woodward #786061. Published by Greg Woodward (A0.1186400). Here, There and Everywhere, by the Beatles epitomises the melodicism of Paul McCartney. This arrangement for string quartet pares back the accompaniment to really bring out the lyrical but angular melody, whilst adding in extra melodic elements and utilising the existing counter-melodies. As a song it lends itself to a jazzy approach; I've kept to the mostly diatonic harmony of the original so it feels naïve and nostalgic in equal measure, and there's also elements of the baroque, which feels appropriate given that McCartney cites The Beach Boys' God Only Knows as a key inspiration for the song. The bridge also references the stab-stab string technique that George Martin stole from Bernard Herman's Psycho score and used extensively in his arrangements for the Beatles.The melody is equally shared around and parts are fully bowed. The short duration would make it ideal for an encore piece.

The work is written in five movements and is based on a series of poetic images.The first movement, Remembering the Sounding Bells..., uses bell-like sonorities and tonal fragments whichare developed between the four instruments of the quartet The second movement Interrupted Ricacares beginswith a compact, accelerating atonal motif which alternates with contrapuntal passages which evoke motet and ricacare forms.En Croisant le Diable Boîteux (Upon meeting the limping Devil) takes its inspiration from the novel by Lesage. This movement is a lively bi-tonal scherzo in classical ABA form which exploits off-the-string bowings and doublestops. The fourth movement, ...L'inflexion des voix chères qui se sont tues (the sounding of dear voices which have been silence) is a line from Paul Verlaine’s : Mon rêve familier (Poèmes saturniens/ melancholia VI 1866). A slowly unfolding dirge-like theme is passed through the four instruments in an expressive lament. The final movement, Appels et invocations, is inspired by a strophe in Charles Baudelaire’s le Serpent qui Danse in Les Fleurs du Mal which speaks of preparing for a voyage, real orimagined, which is expressed here in the angular, robust theme in unison which opens the work.
