Published by Artistic Score Engraving di Galvagno Michele (A0.1197314). Dotzauer’s first attempt at a major form of chamber music comes in 1810, with his Op. 12. This is a couple of quartets for two violins, viola, and violoncello obbligato. One may think these are ordinary string quartets, where the first violin has all the fun and the other three players share the remaining bits, but one would be gravely mistaken. The clue for this is the dedication by Dotzauer to his teacher, Bernhard Romberg. Then we have the word “obbligato†marking the prominence of the cello part over the others. They are entertaining pieces, about 25-minutes-long each, in four movements, and similar to Haydn in style. These are the first two of Dotzauer’s generous production of string quartets (more than twenty!). The first is in E-flat major, while the second is in G minor, a curious choice for sure. This edition comes in digital and print, both including the same material, a score and a set of four parts.

The famous Pachelbel Canon arranged for String Quartet A great choice for weddings & receptions! Pachelbel's Canon Pachelbel's Canon is, in fact, the traditional title for a composition by the German composer Johann Pachelbel. Other names for the work include namely: Canon and Gigue for 3 violins and basso continuo, Canon and Gigue in D, and of course Canon in D. We do not know when or why in particular it was written. The oldest copy is surprisingly from the 19th century. It is important to realize that it was a common routine for organists to practice improvisation on the chord progression underlying the canon. Pachelbel originally scored the Canon notably for three violins and continuo. He also in fact paired the Canon with a gigue. The movements are homotonal, to clarify, both are in the key of D major. History In due time, Pachelbel's Canon went out of style and remained in virtual oblivion for centuries. The Jean-François Paillard chamber orchestra, however, recorded an arrangement of it in 1968. As a result, it gained approval. Many ensembles began likewise to record the piece in the 1970s and by the 1980s became ubiquitous as background music. From the 1970s to the early 2000s, pop songs correspondingly used elements of the piece. The chord progression, in particular, was used this way. Also, since the 1980s, it has been not only wildly popular for weddings, but also for funeral ceremonies in the USA and Europe. Pachelbel Background Johann Pachelbel (1653 –1706) was a German composer, as well as an organist. He was furthermore instrumental in bringing the south German organ school to its apex. He wrote a large body of music, both sacred and, equally important, secular. In particular, he uniquely helped develop the chorale prelude and fugue. For this, he has, in fact, earned a rightful place in the company of the most significant composers of the mid-Baroque period. Works Pachelbel's music was certainly popular. With this in mind, he also consequently had many pupils. His music expressly developed into a model for south German composers. Nowadays, Pachelbel is most famous, particularly for the Canon in D, as well as the F minor Chaconne, the Toccata in E minor, and of course the Hexachordum Apollinis, a set of variations for the keyboard. Influences Johann Jakob Froberger and Johann Caspar Kerll were south German composers who significantly influenced Pachelbel. Furthermore, he was especially influenced by Italians such as Frescobaldi and Poglietti. He frequently preferred an articulate, simple contrapuntal style that highlighted clarity. His music is markedly less extravagant and harmonically adventurous than that of Dieterich Buxtehude. However, as a point often overlooked, like Buxtehude, Pachelbel experimented with different instrumental combinations in his chamber music. Legacy All in all, Pachelbel was most famous as a composer for the keyboard. He composed over two hundred pieces specifically for the instrument. Pachelbel was also surprisingly a prolific composer of vocal music. All in all, about a hundred vocal works survive, including 40 or so large-scale works.

Published by Alan Edgar Ted Moon (A0.1334145). Here'a suite about life in the Isle of Man based on Manx folk tunes and religious music.  All the harmonies and some decorations are mine. There are 5 movements. I MAINLY CELEBRATIONS:  I found all the melodies in The Mona Melodies, a group of traditional tunes (probably heard in Douglas) collected in 1820.  Hunt the Wren is a surprising, lively, traditional event on St Stephen's Day when villagers dance and sing round the town hoping for gifts. This tune is dorian.  A Lullaby in aeolian follows, then In Praise of Wine, in ionian, while at the same time fragments of the Lullaby are heard from inside a home.  The Wren group return.II FAITH Religious music  I assume could have been heard in Manx churches.  Two supposedly Celtic-style antiphon melodies from a 13th-century breviary from Caen  (a) The Holy Cross (b)  The Saints.  I made them into parallel organum with a drone.  Between them is an elaborate ancient melody (labelled Martyrs) for Psalm 80 (Lord, come and save us), which I found with Gaelic words.  I accompany with 3 more parts.  The whole movement is in dorian mode.III EMOTIONS:  Mourning for a Prince is a mixolydian tune also found in The Mona Melodies.  I give the tune to the viola.  In Praise of Beauty is sung by the cello in C major.  This tune is also found in The Mona Melodies, as Brown Oxen (Berry Dowin).  William Brown (Illiam Dhoan) (should be Dhone, I believe) is the air used for Love Lost and Found: again from The Mona Melodies.  I made it C minor at first (love lost) , then  the original version in F major (love found).IV CAR JUAN NAN (Let's All Dance) is a reel, from which I took a few bars and made it into a round.  My source was the book Ed. Colin Jerry Kiaull yn Theay 1:  Manx music and songs for folk instrumentsV WORK, REST and PLAY.  The Spinning Song is major/ionian, the Milking Song is major pentatonic, but my mooing bass part does not respect that: I found those tunes in  Kiaull yn Theay.  The Harvest Celebration Dance (Yn Mheillea) is from manxmusic.com.  The Goodnight Song (Arrane Oie Vie) was traditionally sung after a Christmas Eve event in the church, after more formal proceedings and after the singing of many gloomy vaguely religious songs there and a visit to the pub.  Collected from Mr E, Corteen and Mr T.  Taggart of Malew:  my source:  manxmusic.com.DURATION: 15 minutes.

The work uses the traditionally expected forms for each movement, as a framework or starting point for departure, but also uses a conceptual title for the work as a whole. In this case 'Locomotion', or the conveying of motion (especially with regards to train travel), was used as a compositional stimulus in creating extended pattern-based textures, as well as the development, or journey, of motifs and themes. Otherwise, there is no particular attempt to evoke the sound of particular modes of transportation, or certain landscapes or scenes. Such imagery is left at the discretion of the listener. Formally, the work begins with a loose sonata form first movement, based around E (modal minor). The second movement, on A, bears the hallmarks of a busy scherzo, while the sentimental slow movement in D minor that follows is based on ground basses, in a ternary form of two varied themes. The extended finale grows out of the previous movement, with a jig-like rondo theme on another ground bass. Contrasting episodes feature modulating material, as well as a secondary theme in C. The final section sees a cyclic return of the first movement's first theme, now at the finale's faster tempo, and in the closing key of G minor. Published by Cypress Publishing (A0.1447120). Soon after moving to Vienna in 1781, Mozart wrote what turned out to be his last, and finest, three serenades for wind ensemble. He himself arranged the one in c minor, Köchel 388, for string quintet (2 violins, 2 violas and cello), and that version is known as K. 406. Most of the serenade in B-Flat Major, K 361, sometimes called Gran Partita or Serenade for 13 Instruments, was also arranged for the same quintet combination, apparently by someone else, with the movements divided up between Quintets No. 6 and 7 in the second volume of the standard Peters Edition set of parts for Mozart’s string quintets. The remaining serenade, K. 375, is appearing in a string quintet arrangement for the first time that I know of. While it does not have the dramatic intensity of K. 388/406 or the grand sweep of K. 361, it is a worthy companion to the other two works. He composed it “carefully”, as he explained in a letter to his father, and the piece is full of striking details that show this. In the first movement, the second subject is surprisingly in a dark minor key, and the development is based on it. But it does not appear in the recapitulation, replaced instead by a new major key theme. The first of the two minuets also has a brooding trio in minor. The heart of the work is the Adagio, one of Mozart’s great slow movements, and it should be better known. The long-spun overlapping melodies work particularly well for strings. The finale starts as a conventional Rondo, but breaks off into an extended fugal section (again starting in a minor key!) that gives the movement weight and power beyond a typical formula rondo. This arrangement transposes the original E-Flat Major to D Major, to take advantage of string sonority while making some of the passage work lie better for the instruments. This year’s Christmas publication is God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen, one of the oldest carols of the English tradition, in two versions: for string quartet and for cello quartet. The source for this edition has been the choral part found in Christmas Carols New & Old, edited by John Stainer (1840–1901) and firstly published by Novello & Co around the year 1880. The proposed edition consists of two separate full scores, one for string quartet and one for cello quartet, both accompanied by a full set of performance material. I have decided to keep the string quartet version in the original key of E minor, while I have transposed the cello quartet version down a whole step to account for the better resonance the key of D minor gives on cellos, and to keep the highest note of the first cello in range of the first thumb position. The separate parts for the cello quartet versions bear fingering and bowing suggestions by myself. I hope you will enjoy playing this piece with your friends, family, and students as much as I have enjoyed researching and adapting it. Published by Klaus Wegner Hamilton (A0.1501537). This is a piece I wrote for String Quartet, taken from the 2024 Guildhall Composition Summer Course End-of-Course Concert. I was really obsessed with the pelog scale when I wrote this piece; I would sit at the piano, just running the scale up and down over and over again, absorbing the colours. I kept thinking about the first Gamelan theme in Poulenc's Concerto for two pianos, which I have directly quoted in this piece. I ended up taking this piece in a much different direction however, contrasting the playful with both the overbearingly bright and the ominous. I really learned a lot about writing for String Quartet and strings in general through this piece. Note:There are some differences between the linked performance and the score being provided. Aside from some minor engraving changes as well as minor musical adjustments, the most notable change is that the piece has been moved from E Major to D Major to aid playability. Despite these changes, the recording is functionally the same as the score being provided.
