Bring a Torch, Jeanette, Isabella (French: Un flambeau, Jeannette, Isabelle) is a traditional Christmas carol originating from the Provence region of France. The carol dates back to the 17th century. It is associated with the tradition of children in Provence dressing as shepherds and milkmaids, carrying torches and candles to Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve while singing the carol. The Carol tells the story of two milkmaids, Jeannette and Isabella, who discover the baby Jesus in a stable and run to inform the villagers, urging them to come quietly not to disturb the sleeping child. The song's melody is believed to have originated as a lively dance tune from as early as the 14th century, and French composer Marc-Antoine Charpentier later adapted it for a drinking song. The lyrics were first associated with this melody in a collection of French carols in 1901, transcribed by Julien Tiersot. Edward Cuthbert Nunn made the most popular English adaptation in the late 19th century. Despite its historical roots and charming melody, Bring a Torch, Jeanette, Isabella is considered one of the lesser-known carols outside of France. Still, it remains a beloved part of Christmas celebrations in the Provence region.

Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #3457403. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.534402). Jacques Leguerney (1906-1997) composed two string quartets. The Premier Quatuor à cordes was composed in 1925 during Leguerneyâ??s private piano and composition study with French pianist Thérèse Cahen. His second quartet, subject of this publication by Musik Fabrik, was written between November 1947 and September 1948. The four movements are: I. Allegro moderato; II. Intermezzo; III. Scherzando; IV. Presto-Andantino. This work was, in part, Leguerneyâ??s response to the Premier Quatuor à cordes (inédit) by his colleague, Henri Sauguet. Leguerney stated in a personal interview with Patrick Choukroun (18 May 1989) that: â??I wrote it a bit in opposition to Sauguetâ??s Premier Quatuor. It seemed to me that his quartet was without interest: just scratchings! I wanted to express my way of looking at it from the classical viewpoint of the past: it is almost in the spirit of Mozart, except for the harmonic language, of course. In fact, I wanted to fight against everything that has been done to a quartet since Beethovenâ??s last ones.â? The premiere of the Quatuor à cordes en ré mineur was by the Quatuor Pro Arte at the Abbaye de Royaumont. Before this performance, Poulenc sent Leguerney the following note: â??Fortunate man for whom twelve strings are enough to charm people, I wish you good luck and respectfully embrace you.â? (Handwritten letter, Reims, 4 September 1959). Leguerney was appointed artistic director of the Lumen recording company in 1951, and remained in this position until 1959. He produced four recordings of his music, including the Quatuor Pro Arteâ??s recording of the Quatuor à cordes en ré mineur (1947-1948) (Lumen, LD 2.440, 1958). This disc won the Grand Prix du Disque de lâ??Académie Charles Cros on 13 March 1959. The Pro Arteâ??s members were Suzanne Plazonich, Violin I; Chantal Beylier, Violin II; Nicole Gendreau, Viola; and Micheline Burtin, Cello. Francis Poulenc wrote to Leguerney concerning this recording: â??It is very good Leguerney. Of course, frivolous as I am and shall always remain, it is the 2nd movement that I prefer. Between us, I am like you: I prefer the scherzos after the andantes; that way one is not forced to write a Finale allegro. Yours pleases me very much, in fact, so to my ears it is III-IV-I-II, in the order of pleasure.â? (Manuscript letter, Bagnols, 14 October 1959) The radio station France I broadcast the Quatuor with on 11 July 1959 on the program Schola of the series Concert de musique contemporaine, again with the Quatuor Pro Arte. An archive recording of this broadcast exists on magnetic tape. Critic Claude Rostand wrote: â??Jacques Leguerney does not seem to have looked for special innovations either in form or language. His basic thought seems especially to have written a quartet, that is to say on one hand to have used the four voices with elegance and originality, clarity and homogeneity (four-part writing seems to always have come naturally to him, even at the piano), and on the other hand to exploit all of the supple cushioning that can result from the caress of a bow on a string.â? Critic Emile Vuillermoz wrote: â??His only ambition is to expresses clear and affectionate melodic ideas, in a highly distinguished, elegant and refined language, meaning an homage, in the beginning of our century, to the trios of the greatest stylists of our time. In fact, it is from the vocabulary of Fauré, Debussy and Ravel that he takes his grammar and syntax and that with which he carries out with his this harmonic writing that is both supple and sparse, that is so congenial to the association of four string instruments. This quartet, whose first movement is of a rare perfection, is a delicate enchantment.â? The Musik Fabrik edition of the Quatuor à cordes en ré mineur is taken from a photocopy of the composerâ??s manuscript of the full score. We also had access to the quartet parts found in Leg.

It was written by David Croft and Roy Moore as the theme tune for the BBC’s hit comedy series ‘Allo ‘Allo! Not only did Croft write the theme tune, but he was also the scriptwriter with writing partner Jeremy Lloyd. The original theme is a Fast Waltz, but this delicate and intricate string quartet arrangement is best performed a little slower. This allows the detail and quirky harmonies to be savoured and enjoyed.The TV series ‘Allo ‘Allo with its iconic theme tune will be fondly remembered by anyone from the UK of a ‘certain age’, and by those who know it from the many repeats on cable and streaming channels. It was also broadcast in other parts of the world and ran for 9 series between 1984 and1992. The show was set in occupied France during the second world war and featured the café of René Artois. René had to contend with serving food and drink to the German officers in his café, while supporting members of the French resistance and concealing British spies. He also did his best to conceal his love affairs from his wife. The comedy was very much of its time but the music is especially delightful.Duration: 1 minutes 47 seconds

Léo Delibes was part of a remarkable flowering of opera in France during the middle and late nineteenth century. A list of names gives an idea of the riches: Bizet, Berlioz, Gounod, Massenet, Meyerbeer, Offenbach, Saint-Saëns, Thomas, Lalo and Halévy, plus Italian composers who wrote operas to French texts for Paris production, including Rossini, Donizetti and Verdi. With such a treasure trove, in is inevitable that some very fine music has been allowed to drift into obscurity. In his time, Delibes was celebrated for his melodic gift, but of the more than twenty operas and operettas that he wrote, only Lakmé is performed today, and even it is rare. The Flower Duet (Sous le dôme épais) for soprano and mezzo-soprano, is by far the best known number from this, or any, Delibes opera. The lovely sinuous melody has been used as background music for numerous films, television shows and commercials.This arrangement for string quartet is full length and includes the opening recitative, which can be omitted if desired. It has been transposed from the original B major to C major, which lies better for strings, as well as being easier to read at sight. All parts and scores are set in Sibelius© software format, with careful attention to legibility and page turns.

The word gymnopedi was used by Sati as a quotation from Gymnopaedia, the word for a festival mentioned above. It was composed in 1888, at the age of 22 by Erik Satie (1866-1925/ France), a heretical composer in the 20th century music world. He originally composed three gymnopedies, of which I arranged the second one for String Quartet. The song is stated to be slow and sad. Overall, it represents a bizarre and melancholic atmosphere. It would be a welcomed addition to any music library. This short composition, which lasts less than two minutes, will provide students with the opportunity to continue to develop good intonation because many of the phrases cadence on a unison note. This selection could be performed for concerts, recitals and church services. It is suitable for high school and college students but professional musicians would also enjoy playing this selection. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (7 pages). This selection is one of the many arrangements from the Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble’s extensive music library which are being made available for the first time. We have performed the Trumpet Quartet version of this composition for many church services, especially funerals, when we were asked to supply something more somber and introspective rather than the louder, more festive music which many people come to expect from a Trumpet Ensemble. Francesco Durante was an Italian composer who was born on March 31, 1684 at Frattamaggiore, in the Kingdom of Naples. At an early age he entered the Conservatorio dei poveri di Gesu Cristo, in Naples, where he received lessons from Gaetano Greco. Later he became a pupil of Alessandro Scarlatti at the Conservatorio di Sant’Onofrio. He is said to have succeeded Scarlatti in 1725 at Sant’Onofrio and to have remained there until 1742, when he succeeded Nicola Porpora as head of the Conservatorio di Santa Maria de Loreto, also in Naples. He held this post for thirteen years, until his death on September 30, 1755. His fame as a teacher was considerable, and, unlike his Neapolitan contemporaries, who attracted international notice with their operas, Francesco Durante achieved recognition through his church music, along with some vocal chamber and instrumental works. His concern was not quantity. A complete collection of Durante’s works, consisting almost exclusively of sacred music, was presented by Gaspare Selveggi, a Neapolitan art collector and music theorist, to the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris. The imperial library of Vienna also preserves a valuable collection of Durante’s manuscripts. The fact that Durante never composed for the stage brought him an exaggerated reputation as a composer of sacred music. He was considered one of the best church composers of his style and period. In his masses, requiems, litanies and Lamentations, he could provide strong expressive moments, as he does in this “Kyrieâ€. In addition to this arrangement for a String Quartet, Regis Bookshar has also made other arrangements of this selection.
