Good King Wenceslas is a well-known Christmas carol that narrates the story of a kind-hearted ruler who braves winter weather to help a poor peasant. The carol is inspired by the historical figure of Saint Wenceslas I, Duke of Bohemia, who lived from approximately 907 to 935 AD. Although he is referred to as a king in the carol, he was a duke during his lifetime; the title of king was conferred upon him posthumously by Holy Roman Emperor Otto I.Historical ContextWenceslas was born into a Christian family and raised primarily by his grandmother, Ludmila, who significantly influenced his faith. His mother, Drahomíra, was aligned with paganism and ultimately had Ludmila murdered to gain power. Upon becoming Duke at 18, Wenceslas sought to promote Christianity and was known for his charitable acts, especially towards the poor and marginalized. His reign was marked by efforts to end religious conflicts and to build churches, including part of what is now St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague. However, his commitment to Christianity and his benevolent nature made him a target for his jealous younger brother, Boleslav, who ultimately conspired to murder him in 929 or 935 AD.The CarolThe carol Good King Wenceslas was written in 1853 by English hymn-writer John Mason Neale, set to a melody from a 13th-century spring carol. It was designed to encourage Christian charity, particularly during Christmas, and is traditionally sung on the Feast of Stephen, December 26. The lyrics depict Wenceslas and his page witnessing a poor man gathering firewood and deciding to help him by bringing food and supplies. This story reflects the historical Wenceslas's reputation for generosity and compassion, which has led to his veneration as a saint and the patron saint of the Czech Republic. GREEK LIFE RONDO String 4tet Based on ancient tunes about Greek life.The lively Food Market song (I'll buy you a rooster) forms the refrain.Paraponiariko moy (Don't be unhappy, little one) is a short melody I found, with a scale I cannot name but very sad.Kariotikos from Ikaria is a slow or accelerating dance with some singing, often seen at weddings, in a flexible mode (partly phrygian).I entered the vineyard (Pour love over me) is related to Solomon's Song. I could only find about 6 bars of this melody: the rest is mine. Aeolian mode.Lullaby: this lovely melody uses the Hitzaz scale, which is common in Greek regions and found in Africa, North America and Spain.Hymn for Matins: this is the oldest Greek Orthodox chant I can find. It is from the 13th C Sticherarion and printed in modern notation in JISOCM Vol 4 (2), p357. Nowadays, chanting there is often a solo, often by a woman, but I believe parallel organum was heard in Greece from the 16th C. Modern services include 4- part hymns. I present all three styles.Song of the Dead Brothers is a complex 9th C Byzantine mourning poem which has since been set to music many times. (The nine brothers died.) I found this phrygian setting from Karystos.

This comparison was adopted as a nickname for the work. Called Quasi una fantasia by the author - like its companion Op. 27, No. 1 - the piece was completed in 1801 and dedicated the following year to one of the composer's pupils. Beethoven chose to open the sonata with a slow, hypnotic arpeggio movement, the best known of the entire work. The dotted rhythm of its minimal melody evokes the tradition of 'Trauermusik' (funeral music).

The hymn has its origins in a song fragment collected by Niles on July 16, 1933.[1][2][3][4][5]While in the town of Murphy in Appalachian North Carolina, Niles attended a fundraising meeting held by evangelicals who had been ordered out of town by the police.[1][5] In his unpublished autobiography, he wrote of hearing the song:A girl had stepped out to the edge of the little platform attached to the automobile. She began to sing. Her clothes were unbelievable dirty and ragged, and she, too, was unwashed. Her ash-blond hair hung down in long skeins. ... This arrangement for String Quartet of Heroes which was the 12th studio album by the English musician David Bowie, released on 14 October 1977 through RCA Records. Recorded in collaboration with musician Brian Eno and producer Tony Visconti, it was the second release of his Berlin Trilogy, following Low, released in January the same year, and the only one wholly recorded in Berlin. Sessions took place in mid-1977 after Bowie completed work on Iggy Pop's second solo album Lust for Life.
