Selling over a million copies in the UK, it reached number four in the UK singles chart. Always a favourite for weddings, Capriccio Quartet recorded it for their repertoire, and it is a song that easily lends itself to a string arrangement.I chose to stick to the original key of D, a great key for string players. At times I have thickened the texture by using double stopping. In this arrangement I have tried to use an open string wherever possible. In some cases there are bare fifths. If you prefer you can choose one of the notes to play instead, especially if this note is doubled in another part. I have also put in some bowing, but the endgame is to feel comfortable, so please feel free to change it and alter the slurring if it makes it easier. I have given the cellist some solos, but everyone in the quartet has some time in the sun in this arrangement. And don’t be afraid to use open strings in this piece, especially in the semi- quavers. They sound great!I am aiming this quartet at the professional market, for weddings and other events, but I am hopeful that younger players will also have the courage to try it, even if the intention is not to ever perform it but to have some fun! BACKSTORY ON “The Dog Had…†Variations The origin of “The Dog Had…†Variations†stems from a frantic voicemail received from the composer’s mother-in-law many years ago while on a visit exclaiming that our dog at the time, Pepper, a chocolate-brown and white springer spaniel, “HAD†an accident of explosive proportions on their basement rug and that we needed to “GET HOME†and deal with it immediately. At first the family was taken aback by the phone message, but ultimately it became a source of hilarity and shortly afterward, the composer’s wife created a rhyme from the message and a tune immediately sprung from that. This tune simply became something our family sung together periodically over many year’s time for amusement until now when the composer came up with the idea to set it to variations for string quartet. In this work, the tune is first heard in simple fashion in its entirety in the viola. Fragments of the tune follow in various guises. For example, the rhythm of the words “GET HOME†as well as “I’VE HAD IT†are prominent thematic ideas used in the piece.
