Published by Colin Bayliss (A0.938424). The work was completed on February 2nd 1970 and is the first piece to be retained by the composer after he had destroyed all his earlier compositions. The parts are available as a separate download. The following is taken from the catalogue of the composer's works:- The photocopy of the MS is marked String Quartet No. 1, but is not regarded by the composer as part of his mature string quartet writing. The MS itself was lost in a fire at the home of Col. Robert Tong, formerly Registrar of Queen Mary College, University of London. A typesetting was made in November 2000 as the photocopy had faded so badly. The composer's sketch books suggest that the movements were written in the order 3,2,4,1. 1. Allegro 2. Scherzo (Allegro energico) Trio I - tempo di menuetto Trio II - no tempo indicated - [andante] 3. Andante con moto 4. Allegro ma non troppo Composer's note:- As the above suggests, I originally had no intention of publishing this early piece. The recording by the Lochrian String Quartet of the six numbered quartets, however , together with sleeve notes admitting the existence of this work, prompted me into revising my opinion and allowing its publication, so that anyone wishing to study this first effort may do so. It shows certain traits that I was to develop in the six quartets and others that I was to discard, and therefore is of musicological interest. It also has a few good, albeit imitative, tunes! Duration: Approx. 25 mins. COLIN BAYLISS was born in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire in 1948. His life-long love of music led him to compose from an early age and he now has a catalogue of over a hundred works including two operas, four symphonies, six string quartets and many other pieces for most instrumental and chamber groupings, over seventy of them published. He is a member of the British Academy of Composers and Songwriters, the North West Composers' Association and the Performing Rights Society. As well as writing music himself, he has also compiled annotated catalogues of the works of Anthony Hedges and Sir Peter Maxwell Davies. CDs of his piano music played by David Martin and complete organ music played by Ronald Frost are available on the New Century Classics label. The famous Corta-jaca, the name with which the Gaucho tango became popular, is one of the most recorded and known songs by Chiquinha Gonzaga, alongside Ó abre alas, Lua Branca and Atraente. He was born on the stages of musical theaters, where he was danced in the final scene of the burlesque operetta of national customs Zizinha Maxixe, imitated from French by an anonymous author, performed at Teatro Éden Lavradio, in August 1895. Actor Machado Careca (José Machado Pinheiro e Costa ), anonymous author of the play, ended up putting verses in Corta-jaca's music, helping to popularize it, especially after its version was recorded on disk by the duo Os Geraldos. Throughout history, Corta-jaca attended other stages and repertoires: coffee-singers, beer-beauties, choro circles… But it was at the Palácio do Catete, in 1914, that it reached its glory. Performed on the guitar by First Lady Nair de Teffé, it caused political scandal and ended up calling the administration Hermes da Fonseca. The reaction can be measured by the impassioned speech that Senator Rui Barbosa delivered from the gallery. When inquiring what the cut-jaca that he had heard so much about is, he concludes: “The lowest, the most foul, the rudest of all wild dances, the twin sister of batuque, cateretê and samba. But at presidential receptions, the cut-jaca is performed with all the honors of Wagner's music, and we don't want the conscience of this country to revolt, our faces redden and the youth to laugh!†Never before in the history of Brazil has eminently popular music been performed in the seat of government, in front of the diplomatic corps and the country's elite. Corta-jaca became a classic of the great repertoire of Brazilian instrumental music, deserving recordings, among others, by Abel Ferreira, Altamiro Carrilho, Antonio Adolfo, Artur Moreira Lima, Clara Sverner, Conjunto Regional do Donga, Eudóxia de Barros, Guio de Morais, Itamar Assieré, Leandro Braga, Marcus Viana, Maria Teresa Madeira, Marcelo Verzoni, Paulo Moura, Radamés Gnatalli, Rosária Gatti, Talitha Peres, TurÃbio Santos, numerous bands and some sung versions. It was also written by the conductor for singing and piano and for a small orchestra: oboe, viola, timpani, horns (fá), bassoon. Edinha Diniz, 2011.

To recreate the first millionths of a second of creation you have to focus energy on an awesome scale. - The GuardianSuper Collider will explore two obverse sound worlds and traditions, the vast culture of the string quartet juxtaposed with the ancient performance methods of a gamelan, unleashed through the unlimited sonic universe of electronics. In our own test-tube experiment, this musical moment of collision will hopefully achieve similarly unparalleled results.What does particle physics have to do with music and art? String theory, which the CERN facility hopes to verify or disprove, presumes that matter itself is the manifestation of resonant vibrations, that the world itself is a universal harmony. This post-modern notion - which Kronos embodies with every performance - itself resonates with the ancient Hindu notion of om, the absolute manifest, which is the basis of Indonesian gamelan. We will bring these two ideas of resonance together by combining Kronos with a gamelan - even a virtual one.The behavior of subatomic particles is probabilistic, group-oriented: the motion of any one particle is unpredictable and unknowable: it's what the group does that counts. This could also be a description of the Balinese gamelan, where individual virtuosity is subsumed to interlocking patterns, composite melodies, the sound of the whole. This is also the spirit of Kronos.When Robert Moog developed his synthesizer in the 1960s, he modeled its functionality on the piano and on western music in general - a single person, sitting at a keyboard. This is one reason why it was popularized by Wendy Carlos' Swtiched On Bach. Gamelan Elek Trika takes a similar approach to the very distinctive musical practices of Indonesia. Like the great gamelans of Bali and Java, Gamelan Elek Trika works as a single unit, played by a complete ensemble. The instruments are played like a gamelan - metallophones, drums, and gongs, playing interlocking patterns - but all are channeled through a central 'brain', a single processing unit which controls their sound, tuning, and timbre. The composer can thus alter the sonic environment globally, not just for one instrument at a time but for the complete ensemble.Super Collider is made possible by generous support from Alex Rigopulos and Sachi Sato, MIT, and the MIT Media Lab.
