In this case, I composed a Suite of 5 Argentinian Dances, with their own rhythmic patterns, signature changes, tempo, and musical language, in a serialist framework. The purpose was to showcase the intersection between Western Classical Music and my Argentinian and Latin American culture and influence. Opus Argentino is my first ever string quartet and is an invitation for people to get to know where I come from and  embrace my country’s culture.

The Fugue in A-flat minor, WoO 8, is one of the early organ works by Brahms, composed around 1856-57. It is an intense, brooding fugue published without an opus number. The fugue is part of a small set of four early organ pieces by Brahms, including the chorale prelude and fugue O Traurigkeit, o Herzeleid (WoO 7). These early organ works demonstrate Brahms' mastery of counterpoint at a young age. While Brahms did not have a close personal relationship with the organ, the genre of the chorale prelude allowed him to pay homage to his musical heritage, following the conventions of the form by paraphrasing and elaborating on pre-existing Lutheran chorale melodies. The Fugue in A-flat minor is considered one of the most significant and high-quality of Brahms' early organ works. It was eventually assigned the posthumous opus number 122, which is still known today. Delores did a little research on me and my music online and she said yes. So, here we are. Siamo d’accordo. I wrote my first piano quintet in 1988 for the Apple Hill Chamber Players. That was not the usual quintet of a piano and string quartet. The Schubert Trout quintet was my model: piano, violin, viola, cello and double bass. I titled that work, Piano Quintet … apple strudel (1988). At that time I was a huge fan of the Entenmann’s Apple Strudel. I imagined the piano being encased/surrounded by the four string instruments. My first real piano quintet was written for the Formosa Quartet and pianist Tammy Lum. They premiered the work at Nyack College during the spring of 1988. My current piano quintet (no. 2) is titled Pq2 … (2014). It is a work in five movements. I. Moderato … Trio II. Adagio … III. Tsiaj 1 … Allegro IV. Tsiaj 2 … Prestissimo! V. Adagio What’s tsiaj? I got this from Charles E. Ives. The title of the middle movement of his Piano Trio is TSIAJ. It’s an acronym of This Scherzo is a joke. Enjoy!

The Lieder for voice and piano by Felix Mendelssohn, while of high quality, have mostly been overshadowed by those of his contemporary and friend Robert Schumann. But his Lieder ohne Worte (Songs Without Words) for piano solo with no vocal text, were and remain immensely popular, and had a great influence on his fellow composers, creating a genre of short poetic pieces for piano accessible to skilled amateurs and students as well as professionals.This set of four arrangements for string quartet begins with the best known and most loved of his vocal songs, Auf Flügeln des Gesanges (On Wings of Song), a setting of a poem by Heinrich Heine. Following are two Songs Without Words, a fine untitled one in G Major, and the famous Frühlingslied (Spring Song).In between them is a piece by his older sister, Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel, an accomplished composer with a catalog of over 450 works, some of which were originally published under Felix’s name. Like Felix, she wrote Lieder both with a sung text, and with no words, which she called Lieder für das Pianoforte. This little jewel is one of the latter, from her Opus 8. She gave it the title Lied (Lenau), a reference to the poet Nikolaus Lenau (1802-1850). But with neither sung text nor poem title indicated, it is a little mysterious. A gentle sinuous melody leads to some bold modulations before returning, not in the expected tonic key but on the dominant. Only in the last few bars does it resolve to the home key. The arrangement transposes the original D-Flat Major to D Major, which lies better for strings.
