When Can I See You Again is an electronic, dance song that runs throughout Disney Pixar's movie Wreck-It-Ralph. However, how does the thumbing of kick drums and the whirl of synthesizers translate to a string quartet?This arrangment was written for late elementary and middle school students in mind. The melody is split up between each instrument allowing for each student to be featured, but also teaching young musicians when to play out and when to play under the melody. Most of the players use pizzaccato or tremolo at some point, allowing the musicians to explore the different textures they can create with their instruments. Students are introduced to some syncopation but are still given strong downbeats by someone else in the ensemble. This arrangment allows for students to learn fundemental music skills while also playing something they have heard on the big screen!

Published by Helen Marple-Horvat (A0.749203). ‘Kissing You’ was written for the 1996 film Romeo and Juliet by Des’ree Weekes and Tim Atack, with the gorgeous string arrangements by Craig Armstrong. It is a much loved song, very well received by the critics and public alike, and hugely popular at weddings. As well as this arrangement for singer and string quartet/string orchestra, I also have an arrangement for string quartet without the singer, where the first violinist has the vocal line. The Quartet version can be found on my 'Skinny Black Dogs' Youtube Channel by typing in 'Romeo and Juliet, Kissing You.' The string parts in this version are almost identical to the quartet version but require fewer moments of double stopping as the singer carries the tune. The parts are not difficult to play, and the key is easy for strings. My bowing is just a guide, and less experienced players can easily change the bow more often. There is a tricky part for cello at Bar 28, but with a little help from a good teacher, I’m sure that it is not impossible. The cellist in my recording plays it very lightly, and it could also be done in thumb position, played an octave lower, or simplified. It is important to stick to a strict tempo so that the singer can pull against the barline. Take a look at my Quartet version on Youtube, but bear in mind that this one is a lot easier for the first violin.

Published by Slide Ride (A0.784347). 1 Octave Scale Studies in 15+ keys for 4-part ensembles of like or mixed instruments If this is your first exposure to these scale studies, you are in for a treat! Donuts, if you make a mistake!The initial incarnation of these studies were written for trombone quartet and we would play them in the Tennessee Tech Trombone Choir with the challenge that whomever made the first mistake had to buy donuts for the rest of the ensemble. Since then I have brought that version to several clinics and warm up sessions. One time before I got to explain the title, a fellow trombone professor said, Oh, I get it! Don’t step in the holes!I only wish I had thought of that myself... Since we have one of the best donut shops in TN here in Cookeville, treating the studio to sugar coated goodies was always my intent.As with those initial exercises, you can vary these as much as you’d like.· Choose a tempo.· Choose a dynamic.· Choose an articulation/style.One way I like to play these is to have one person be the model, playing the entire scale over and over while everyone else plays the fragmented versions. That helps everyone to keep on track and stay in time. Double or triple up the parts for ensemble cohesion with a larger group.Practice one key, gradually speeding it up to improve fluidity, or choose a variation and take it through all keys, playing version A, B, C, or D then skipping to play the same set in a new key.If you want an additional challenge, play them in different octaves or change the key. Play the F Major set in f minor (all forms), different modes, etc. Players really have to be on their toes to remember if they are playing melodic minor in the ascending or descending form! For jazz players, try swinging them in dorian or mixolydian modes.The variations are endless!If you are using these with transposing instruments, 1) is F Major in Concert Pitch, 2) is Bb Major in Concert pitch, and so on. When you reach a scale that is enharmonic for another key (Db/C#, Gb/F#, or Cb/B), they are presented in both keys for each instrument so Trumpets can play in Eb while the Flutes are playing in C# with similar examples for all keys.All Donut Etudes with the same volume number are compatible so you can play them in mixed quartets or large ensembles with one or more instruments/people on part 1 and a different instrument on part 2, etc. Since the quartets are all identical, conductors/coaches can use any of the scores to tell which part should be playing at what time. Once you have played a scale with one set of parts, everyone can rotate to a different part and play the same scales again!Enjoy!

Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (A0.869118). Morango ... almost a tango (1983) is the most popular piece of music from my portfolio of over 150 works!!! It is amazing that the work was conceived thirty years ago!!! Originally, it was just a 32-bar jazz tune I performed every Sunday night with the Moon Unit at the 1369 Jazz Club in Cambridge, Massachusetts, 1980-1984. The string quartet version, although written for the Kronos Quartet, was premiered at Concert X by the Composers in Red Sneakers in Sanders Theater, Cambridge, Massachusetts, on July 21, 1983. The Red Sneakers String Quartet comprised of Thal Aylward, Melissa Howe, Frank Grimes and Sandy Kiefer. Richard Buell reported in the Boston Globe a few days later that the doleful Morango ... almost a tango got a lot of mileage out of a stubborn, almost unchanging cello line and the elaborations above it. The original program note read, Last summer in Vermont I met Gustavo Moretto, an Argentine composer, who taught me the finer and more beautiful aspects of the Tango. In my modest way, as someone looking in from the outside, I created Morango ... almost a tango - a bastardized version of the 'real thing.' Morango ... is also intrinsically connected to Kate Moran, a sometimes painter ... to whom it is dedicated. The work is played con sordino throughout. I hope the sirens next door don't intrude too much. But then again, John Cage would be delighted. Eventually, the Kronos got around to performing it on tour in Europe in 1986. When they played it as an encore in Italy at the American Academy in Rome, Mya Tannenbaum of the Corriere Della Sera wrote, Non sono mancati i bis. Un richiamo al sex appeal del vecchio tango da parte di un giovane «premio Roma», Tom Lee. Soon after, back in the States, the Kronos performed it at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York. John Rockwell wrote in the New York Times, ... a soulfully beautiful score by Thomas Oboe Lee. Three months later the Kronos recorded it on their Nonesuch CD, White Man Sleeps. Many other string quartets, both here and abroad, have since added the work to their repertory. The Lydian String Quartet, especially, have taken the work on their concert tours in the United States, Europe and the former Soviet Union. It appears on a CD recorded by the Lyds in Moscow on MCA Classics. As interest in the work grew, other ensembles have requested arrangements of Morango ... There are now three other versions of the work: one for big band jazz ensemble by Ken Schaphorst, another for string orchestra commissioned by Aram Gharabekian and Sinfonova, and the third for violin and piano commissioned by the Paul Chou-Paul Salerni Duo. Of the string orchestra version, Richard Dyer of the Boston Globe wrote, Lee's piece, Morango ... almost a tango, is a transcription of atmospheric and elegant music originally composed for string quartet; it is as sultry as Faith Domergue in a film noir, and it steams. This is a „take another crossroad version of Mozart´s famous Little Night Music, written by Austrian Arranger and Composer Augustin Lehfuss – a wild and funny arrangement for string quartet in a unusual latin style. Everybody knows the triad motive at the beginning of Mozart´s original composition, which reappears several times throughout the piece. The idea was, that the performing quartet, while playing the original work of Mozart – tired of always playing the same classical music – „turns left any time the characteristic motive appears, and switches to the latin version which is sold here. Then it runs wild for a while and enjoys Mozart´s theme in a crazy latin style, bevor, finally disciplinized again, finishes in Mozart´s original ending of his „Little Night Music. From the „turn out of Mozart´s original piece until the original ending the latin arrangement lasts about three minutes . For this arrangement starts with the famous triad motive, it can also be played as a stand alone version, though recognizable for the audience. There are phrasings and dynamics indicated in this arrangement, but every quartet should feel free to choose their own phrasings. This is a two-movement piece comprising of a prelude and an allegro. The entire piece is meant to convey a simple story of witnessing the change of different lifestyles, from the peaceful and simple rural life to the electrifying grandeur of urban city life. The prelude, signifying the rural atmosphere, begins with unsettling chords that feel seasonal and constantly moving. The different string melodies are as lovingly soothing as playing in the grassy fields and mountains. They are fun, pleasant, and whimsical, and they express the rather playful and tranquil setting of rural living. The beginning chords may feel unusually active, but it also adds to the color of this calming tranquility. Life couldn't be any better. In contrast to the fun and joyful theme of the prelude, the allegro embodies the absolute hustle and bustle of the big city. Explosive harmonies progress through the movement. Melodies from the prelude now intertwine with this new faster theme, playing more lively and vigorous. The mood has changed. Everything seems fast-paced and maybe overloading. But, maybe that's not a bad thing. A bit into the movement, as the hustle and bustle finally slow down, the essence of the prelude returns to calm the music. Homesickness mixed with overwhelming emotions is just as powerful of an expression as joy or anger. Filled with confidence and resolve, the music quickens back into its fast theme. The nature of intense focus, inspired by the urban surroundings, mixes with the joy and fun of the old ways. Everything now seems not just more familiar and comforting, but lively as well. As the music reaches its end, those unsettling chords from the prelude return to once again remind us that the rural lifestyle will always be a part of us. Maybe this city life won't be such a bad thing. We experience the best life when it comes with change. While I never lived in a rural community myself, I can empathize with the experience of people who have from their own stories and emotions. And when they move into the overwhelming cityscape, they sometimes either break down or build up. In the end, though, I can never really understand what it is like until I move into a rural community. But I know nothing will ever change how they grew up there, as the experiences always seem to follow them into the next chapter of their adventures. And it is because of that kind of beautiful resolve, did I nickname this Prelude and Allegro Urbanalia. When life meets change it opens up a whole new story.

In between I wrote four (nos. 2 – 5) for the Kronos Quartet, one (no. 6) for the Manhattan String Quartet, one (no. 7) for the Lydian String Quartet, one (no. 8) for the Artaria String Quartet, two (nos. 9 - 10) for the Hawthorne String Quartet, and one (no. 11) for the Formosa Quartet. The number twelve immediately brought to mind the months of the year. But I thought a twelve-movement string quartet might be a bit excessive, and difficult to achieve in a coherent narrative arc. Most classical string quartets by Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven are in four movements. So why not the seasons, a movement for each: spring, summer, autumn, and winter. I am a huge fan of The Creation by Franz Joseph Haydn. Confession: I am a huge fan of anything by maestro Haydn. For inspiration and guidance, I went to Haydn’s other oratorio The Seasons. Armed with a Dover publication of the full score and a recording of the complete work by Sir Thomas Beecham on EMI Classics, I got down to work over the summer of 2010. String Quartet No. 12 … The Seasons, after Franz Joseph Haydn is in four movements, played without pause between movements. 1) Intro: Heavy snow … Spring: Crocuses blooming!!! 2) Summer: Cloudburst! Double rainbow … Trio 3) Autumn: La Caccia … Danza Rusticana … Trio 4) Intro: Heavy snow again … Winter: O Magnum Mysterium … Hail storm! The work begins with four descending chords, depicting the falling of snow. But it’s Spring and crocuses are seen peeping through the snow … Summer begins with cloudbursts, thunder, lightning and torrential rain. A double rainbow appears after the storm. The sun emerges from the clouds in the Trio section. It is a lovely day after all; but then the clouds return … La Caccia: men go hunting in the Autumn. Well, the men in Haydn’s days at least. Peasant ladies dance as they harvest in the fields. A hawk appears, soaring overhead in the Trio as the sun sets in an orange-red sky ... In Winter snow falls again; but it’s the season to celebrate the Nativity. The cello keeps the 12/8 going while the viola and violins become punctuations. The punctuation continues while the first violin plays the melody. At measure 15 the song moves into a 6/8 feel. At measure 34 the song returns to the original 12/8 feel. The composition then splits to where the viola takes on harmony in the 12/8 feel while the violins take on a 6/8 countermelody. A short bridge is created by stacking the violins on top of the viola/cello 12/8 feel. Then it splits again to where Violin II stays with the viola/cello pattern and Violin I goes off on it's own. During this time the first violin folds in the 6/8 melody, creating a pleasant conflict. The song D.C.'s to the original 12/8 content. The melodies and lyrics sound deceptively simple and the hook is just la la la. All of this is again matched perfectly with the performer; Minogue's veneer of naïve vacuity that belies the consummate behind. In addition to all this, the entire main vocal part fits in the five-note starting position for piano students - c, d, e, f, g - making this song an absolute gift for music teachers. Well, 20-odd years ago at least. This arrangement for String Quartet is a relatively straight-forward idiomatic transcription in the same tonality as the original recording, so you could even play along with it for fun. There are 5 movements. I MAINLY CELEBRATIONS:  I found all the melodies in The Mona Melodies, a group of traditional tunes (probably heard in Douglas) collected in 1820.  Hunt the Wren is a surprising, lively, traditional event on St Stephen's Day when villagers dance and sing round the town hoping for gifts. This tune is dorian.  A Lullaby in aeolian follows, then In Praise of Wine, in ionian, while at the same time fragments of the Lullaby are heard from inside a home.  The Wren group return.II FAITH Religious music  I assume could have been heard in Manx churches.  Two supposedly Celtic-style antiphon melodies from a 13th-century breviary from Caen  (a) The Holy Cross (b)  The Saints.  I made them into parallel organum with a drone.  Between them is an elaborate ancient melody (labelled Martyrs) for Psalm 80 (Lord, come and save us), which I found with Gaelic words.  I accompany with 3 more parts.  The whole movement is in dorian mode.III EMOTIONS:  Mourning for a Prince is a mixolydian tune also found in The Mona Melodies.  I give the tune to the viola.  In Praise of Beauty is sung by the cello in C major.  This tune is also found in The Mona Melodies, as Brown Oxen (Berry Dowin).  William Brown (Illiam Dhoan) (should be Dhone, I believe) is the air used for Love Lost and Found: again from The Mona Melodies.  I made it C minor at first (love lost) , then  the original version in F major (love found).IV CAR JUAN NAN (Let's All Dance) is a reel, from which I took a few bars and made it into a round.  My source was the book Ed. This score is an arrangement for piano, violin I and II, viola, cello, bass with optional drums.Backstory: Years ago I wrote a simple piano piece for my students. As instrumental music can fully exist outside the confines of words, it can be difficult to find the right title for something that is pure sound and possibility. I took inspiration from the time of year in which I had composed it and stamped it, “Almost Mayâ€. Like springtime in the Northern Hemisphere, “Almost May†unfolds slowly and majestically, with ever-evolving layers for the senses to discover. What to listen for: ThemeThe main theme is first presented by the piano with minimal fanfare. This part was written to be easy enough for a child, which despite being sparing of notes, delivers rich harmonic content. Every note has been carefully curated for the optimal combination of accessibility and depth. Weaving chromatically into distantly-related keys, the melody takes small steps into contrasting musical spaces. In a wordless procession, the storyline plays out, as if the theme discovers that someone very different lives next door, and they slowly become inseparable. The piano is accompanied by an airy touch of brushes against a snare drum, like the pitter patter of soft feline steps. In the low frequency range, the upright bass supports and deepens the tonal palette with its earthy underpinnings. What to listen for: Variation I The unmistakable string section arrives like a breath of warm air. Lush, warm and reassuring like sunshine on your cheeks, the string parts begin with long tones. This broadness and stability will evolve into more layers of complexity throughout the section. While the role of the string section is background accompaniment, it undergoes textural changes which allow for some layers to briefly rise to the forefront as melody. Careful listening to the string parts will reveal an oceanic churning, a motion from background to foreground with expansions and contractions along the way. Floating overtop this density is the improvised piano solo, with ascending gestures that progress in detail and density. Each instrument enters a general unfolding and growth period in the first variation. The bass and drums include more fills than before, as the ensemble tends gradually toward more grandeur. What to listen for: Variation II The final variation opens with a decadent treatment of the melody. What was initially expressed by a soloist as a childlike plea is reimagined as a two-part conversation between the piano and lead viola. The obbligato voiced in the viola is a derivation of the melody that holds the space between phrases so the listener's attention is passed seamlessly between the piano and viola part. This dialogue features commentary on the original melody in the form of ornamentation and taking surprising pathways to expected destinations. The rhythm section (bass and drums) takes more liberties in creating a verdant soundscape as the ensemble rises to a final climax. Credits: I would like to thank Cole Canaday for the nuance, imagination and depth of understanding with which he brought this piece to life.
