Kyrie - by Francesco Durante; String Quartet – Intermediate – Digital Download. “Kyrieâ€, originally written for a four-part vocal ensemble by Francesco Durante, has now been transcribed, edited and arranged by Regis Bookshar, for a String Quartet, consisting of 2 Violins, 1 Viola and 1 Violoncello. It would be a welcomed addition to any music library. This short composition, which lasts less than two minutes, will provide students with the opportunity to continue to develop good intonation because many of the phrases cadence on a unison note. This selection could be performed for concerts, recitals and church services. It is suitable for high school and college students but professional musicians would also enjoy playing this selection. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (7 pages). This selection is one of the many arrangements from the Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble’s extensive music library which are being made available for the first time. We have performed the Trumpet Quartet version of this composition for many church services, especially funerals, when we were asked to supply something more somber and introspective rather than the louder, more festive music which many people come to expect from a Trumpet Ensemble. Francesco Durante was an Italian composer who was born on March 31, 1684 at Frattamaggiore, in the Kingdom of Naples. At an early age he entered the Conservatorio dei poveri di Gesu Cristo, in Naples, where he received lessons from Gaetano Greco. Later he became a pupil of Alessandro Scarlatti at the Conservatorio di Sant’Onofrio. He is said to have succeeded Scarlatti in 1725 at Sant’Onofrio and to have remained there until 1742, when he succeeded Nicola Porpora as head of the Conservatorio di Santa Maria de Loreto, also in Naples. He held this post for thirteen years, until his death on September 30, 1755. His fame as a teacher was considerable, and, unlike his Neapolitan contemporaries, who attracted international notice with their operas, Francesco Durante achieved recognition through his church music, along with some vocal chamber and instrumental works. His concern was not quantity. A complete collection of Durante’s works, consisting almost exclusively of sacred music, was presented by Gaspare Selveggi, a Neapolitan art collector and music theorist, to the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris. The imperial library of Vienna also preserves a valuable collection of Durante’s manuscripts. The fact that Durante never composed for the stage brought him an exaggerated reputation as a composer of sacred music. He was considered one of the best church composers of his style and period. In his masses, requiems, litanies and Lamentations, he could provide strong expressive moments, as he does in this “Kyrieâ€. In addition to this arrangement for a String Quartet, Regis Bookshar has also made other arrangements of this selection. There are Quartets readily available for a wide variety of instrumental ensembles. Please take the time to look for other versions of this composition. You may find something else that may also suit your needs. I would also encourage you to search for other arrangements by Regis Bookshar, as well, as there are numerous arrangements in a variety of styles, also available for purchase. Tamino is able to overcome them one by one, but Papageno struggles because he lacks the mental strength to do so. When Papageno tells Sprecher that he would be happy with just some wine, Sprecher asks if he has any other wishes. Papageno says he didn't have any before, but then he thinks of something else he wants and starts singing a song about it. The song says that it feels good to eat and drink delicious things, but Papageno is lonely and wants a cute girl or a wife. Papageno plays a musical instrument called a Glockenspiel while singing. This instrument is different from the modern Glockenspiel and is a keyboard instrument that strikes metal plates. In this arrangement, all the parts take turns playing the melody so that all the performers can enjoy it.

Everyone gets a turn playing the melody, and the quartet only splits into two rhythmic groups, making this a good introduction to small ensemble skills. The melody is the most difficult part to play - plan to spend a good amount of time rehearsing and practicing this. And of course, if possible you should introduce this piece as something else and Rick Roll your audience - I usually say we are playing a theme from Symphony in G my Mozart. Enjoy this piece!

When Can I See You Again is an electronic, dance song that runs throughout Disney Pixar's movie Wreck-It-Ralph. However, how does the thumbing of kick drums and the whirl of synthesizers translate to a string quartet?This arrangment was written for late elementary and middle school students in mind. The melody is split up between each instrument allowing for each student to be featured, but also teaching young musicians when to play out and when to play under the melody. Most of the players use pizzaccato or tremolo at some point, allowing the musicians to explore the different textures they can create with their instruments. Students are introduced to some syncopation but are still given strong downbeats by someone else in the ensemble. This arrangment allows for students to learn fundemental music skills while also playing something they have heard on the big screen!

This string quartet arrangement of “Margaritaville,†by Jimmy Buffett is a great addition to your pop repertoire for cocktail hours or dinner parties. While the melody mostly stays with the 1st Violin part, everyone else has harmony or something fun to do.One thing that sets my arrangements apart from others is that I fit all of my parts on no more than 2 sheets of music. This makes it so the songs can fit into a binder, without the need for flipping pages!Another great thing (for multi-instrumental arrangements) is that I include cue lines on each part, so that every player in the ensemble can see one other person’s music at the same time. This is so amazingly useful and has saved countless performances in the past. If someone skips a beat or misses a measure, you can now see where they are and reconnect! This also helps with sight-reading and keeping the group together in general.
