Published by Des Press (A0.977359). Abba released Take a Chance on Me - from ABBA: The Album - in January 1978 and it became one of their biggest hits. Influences from this track can be heard in the charts through the following decade and beyond. Needless to say, it remains popular today. As usual with ABBA tracks, the sound production is a work of art in itself: Myriad small details are woven into the tapestry of this high-energy song, such as an audacious one-note string arrangement, a baritone saxophone, state-of-the-art (at the time) synthesized effects and sophisticated multi-voice overdubbing which includes a less-than-perfect layer that may not be obvious but adds to the character and makes listeners more comfortable singing along, The guitar has awesome sustain, sounding almost Hawaiian, with some very slick licks in-between. This arrangement for string quartet cannot boast such complexity in four parts but tips its hat at what details can be squeezed into an idiomatic transcription. As usual in this series from Des Press, the all-important bass-line is used, giving the cellist a chance to shine as a throbbing groove-machine. This arrangement is in the same tonality as the original recording, so you could even play along for fun. The level is on the easier side of advanced; quickly rehearsed by professional quartets and an accessible challenge for experienced students. Enjoy!

Unlike much of what you'll find out in the world of cheap gig music, this was in fact written BY a string player who has played in symphony orchestras, rock bands, and everything in between; who knows what gigging as a quartet looks like, but also what will wow your audiences without requiring weeks of rehearsal to prepare. So leave your days of sight-reading through piano scores behind and give your quartet some firepower with this hard hitting chart, that will surely enable your ensemble to do at least a little justice to this legendarily emotional banger from Ireland's finest! Bono's soaring vocal melodies on this tune offer more than enough material on their own to tug at an audience's heartstrings, but in this chart you'll also find faithful adaptations of the iconic guitar & bass parts (performed by cello & viola) that truly make this song one of a kind. Using extended string techniques like chopping & strum bowing, you'll feel as if you're rocking out with the band... with no need to hire those annoying extra musicians. But as we all know, strings have much more to offer dynamically than simply plodding along mimicking a rock band, so I've taken several select moments in this chart to break away briefly from those driving grooves into more open, contemplative textures, truly allowing this instrumentation to shine in its own unique way. All of that said, maybe rhythmic string playing isn't your thing and you just need a chart that classical string players can read through on a cocktail gig where the buyer clearly doesn't pay attention to the lyrical content of their song requests. If that's the case, I've provided a couple alternate figures at the back of the book that can be used to replace the percussive stuff in the viola part, making it much simpler without sacrificing too much of the energy. OR if you want to go even further, maybe you DO want to hire that band after all so you can just relax and play some melody lines. Lucky for you I have included a rhythm section lead sheet as part of the music packet, so that any auxiliary musicians you want to add in will be able to follow along with ease. Playing ‘cello in a Carol concert makes me want to cry. That is why I have created arrangements of classic Christmas Carols and Songs guaranteed not to bore the pants off your violist or ‘cellist. No more bashing out bass notes for the ‘cello, and no more chugging away on the off-beat for viola while the fiddles get soaring melody after soaring counter-melody. We deserve more than this, right guys? You got it! This arrangement of 'White Christmas’ for string quartet stays true to the spirit of the original Bing Crosby version with respect both melody and harmony. Beginning with those unmistakeable 4 chords in the upper strings, the ‘cello takes the majority of the vocal line, but all three other parts are also given a chance to shine with melody, counter melody and harmony by turns. With high positions in both violin parts and up to 4th position plus harmonics for the lower strings, the challenge in this arrangement is found in the technical and musical interpretation of this iconic song, and is a great play for ensembles of advanced intermediate standard. Note from the arranger: All my arrangements for strings are conceived specifically with the aim of writing interesting parts for all players. Most parts do not go beyond 4th position (with the exception of a few harmonics in the lower string parts, and some higher positions in the violin parts), making them suitable for advanced student and mixed ability groups. The arrangement features each instrument taking turns with the melody, counter melody, and motor. Total is 23 pages and the approx. run time of the piece is 2min 45seconds to 3minutes. About the arrangement: The arrangement is primarily written in 6/8, but features some metric modulation (going from dotted quarter 63 to quarter note 126bpm for example). This gives the piece a dramatic sense of escalation as it reaches the final passage. Each player will have his or her time to shine in the arrangement. Also, various playing techniques are used such as ricochet (on open strings), legato, marcato, spicc. It is all written in a way to maximize the virtuosic sound while maintaining a comfortability and playability. There is also some interesting deviation from the original melody.
