Howard #986178. Published by Robert A. Howard (A0.1402959). This Second String Quartet is in four movements, and runs to over 30 minutes long. The work uses the traditionally expected forms for each movement, as a framework or starting point for departure, but also uses a conceptual title for the work as a whole. In this case 'Locomotion', or the conveying of motion (especially with regards to train travel), was used as a compositional stimulus in creating extended pattern-based textures, as well as the development, or journey, of motifs and themes. Otherwise, there is no particular attempt to evoke the sound of particular modes of transportation, or certain landscapes or scenes. Such imagery is left at the discretion of the listener. Formally, the work begins with a loose sonata form first movement, based around E (modal minor). The second movement, on A, bears the hallmarks of a busy scherzo, while the sentimental slow movement in D minor that follows is based on ground basses, in a ternary form of two varied themes. The extended finale grows out of the previous movement, with a jig-like rondo theme on another ground bass. Contrasting episodes feature modulating material, as well as a secondary theme in C. The final section sees a cyclic return of the first movement's first theme, now at the finale's faster tempo, and in the closing key of G minor. In no way does the title refer to the technical demands of the piece, which are considerable. Rather, it refers to the endlessly imaginative, energized, and constantly changing play that might be engaged in by four different, though like-minded children. Indeed, the inspiration for the quartet was my then two-year-old daughter Rachel, whose boundless energy and capacity for play I found (and still find) rather terrifying. Child's Play consists of three movements: Games (fast), Intermezzo: Sogni d'Oro (Dreams of Gold) (slow), and Dances (very fast). In Games, four energetic and well-rested players leap out of the starting blocks together and engage in sport of various kinds: running games, chasing games, teasing games, tag, echo games (Simon Says), races, and so forth, eventually returning to the unison from which they began. Intermezzo: Sogni d'Oro (Dreams of Gold) offers a quiet, episodic, dreamlike respite from the frenetic mood of Games. In Dances, the energized character of the first movement resumes, only faster. Dances is a perpetual motion movement in three parts, with a slower, more fragmented middle section sandwiched between a boisterous and frenzied dance of life. This movement ends much in the same way as the first movement began, bringing the circuit of the piece to a close. Child's Play was commissioned by, and is dedicated, with many thanks and great appreciation, to the Alexander String Quartet.

Program Note: Affects, written in 2016, is a piece for string quartet that depicts the human emotions of grief, fear, anger, and sadness. Grief is a moderate paced movement where the different instruments respond to the loss of bond and affection in the human condition. Fear begins with a solo cello line that experiments with tonality. Each instrument is introduced with the same line, essentially building up the tension and confusion that is caused when humans exhibit fear. Anger uses a quick, rushed tempo similar to the fast, exerted force that is caused when humans express anger. Often, humans find themselves acting before they think, which is how the instruments interact with each other in this movement. The string quartet culminates in a slow, brooding movement, Sadness, where the themes are exhibited and built upon in a contrapuntal motion. Humans express sadness with misery, which is shown in the heavy lines of the instruments. The piece ends with a sense of hope, only to be crushed with the sadness that everyone eventually experiences, fading away into nothingness. This score is an arrangement for piano, violin I and II, viola, cello, bass with optional drums.Backstory: Years ago I wrote a simple piano piece for my students. As instrumental music can fully exist outside the confines of words, it can be difficult to find the right title for something that is pure sound and possibility. I took inspiration from the time of year in which I had composed it and stamped it, “Almost Mayâ€. Like springtime in the Northern Hemisphere, “Almost May†unfolds slowly and majestically, with ever-evolving layers for the senses to discover. What to listen for: ThemeThe main theme is first presented by the piano with minimal fanfare. This part was written to be easy enough for a child, which despite being sparing of notes, delivers rich harmonic content. Every note has been carefully curated for the optimal combination of accessibility and depth. Weaving chromatically into distantly-related keys, the melody takes small steps into contrasting musical spaces. In a wordless procession, the storyline plays out, as if the theme discovers that someone very different lives next door, and they slowly become inseparable. The piano is accompanied by an airy touch of brushes against a snare drum, like the pitter patter of soft feline steps. In the low frequency range, the upright bass supports and deepens the tonal palette with its earthy underpinnings. What to listen for: Variation I The unmistakable string section arrives like a breath of warm air. Lush, warm and reassuring like sunshine on your cheeks, the string parts begin with long tones. This broadness and stability will evolve into more layers of complexity throughout the section. While the role of the string section is background accompaniment, it undergoes textural changes which allow for some layers to briefly rise to the forefront as melody. Careful listening to the string parts will reveal an oceanic churning, a motion from background to foreground with expansions and contractions along the way. Floating overtop this density is the improvised piano solo, with ascending gestures that progress in detail and density. Each instrument enters a general unfolding and growth period in the first variation. The bass and drums include more fills than before, as the ensemble tends gradually toward more grandeur. What to listen for: Variation II The final variation opens with a decadent treatment of the melody. What was initially expressed by a soloist as a childlike plea is reimagined as a two-part conversation between the piano and lead viola. The obbligato voiced in the viola is a derivation of the melody that holds the space between phrases so the listener's attention is passed seamlessly between the piano and viola part. This dialogue features commentary on the original melody in the form of ornamentation and taking surprising pathways to expected destinations. The rhythm section (bass and drums) takes more liberties in creating a verdant soundscape as the ensemble rises to a final climax. Credits: I would like to thank Cole Canaday for the nuance, imagination and depth of understanding with which he brought this piece to life. Versace on the Floor is a song recorded by American singer and songwriter Bruno Mars from his third studio album, 24K Magic (2016). The song was released to Hot AC radio on June 12, 2017, as the album's third single in the United States. The track was originally released by Atlantic Records as a promotional single on November 4, 2016, for digital download and streaming. The song was written by Mars and frequent co-writers Philip Lawrence, Brody Brown and James Fauntleroy, while Shampoo Press & Curl handled the production. It is an R&B slow-paced track about Mars' connection with a woman, whose Versace dress rests on the floor while they enjoy each other's company. On June 27, 2017, French DJ David Guetta released a remix version of the song. Here is a string quartet purely adaptive arrangement of this beautiful Mars' work.

This is a two-movement piece comprising of a prelude and an allegro. The entire piece is meant to convey a simple story of witnessing the change of different lifestyles, from the peaceful and simple rural life to the electrifying grandeur of urban city life. The prelude, signifying the rural atmosphere, begins with unsettling chords that feel seasonal and constantly moving. The different string melodies are as lovingly soothing as playing in the grassy fields and mountains. They are fun, pleasant, and whimsical, and they express the rather playful and tranquil setting of rural living. The beginning chords may feel unusually active, but it also adds to the color of this calming tranquility. Life couldn't be any better. In contrast to the fun and joyful theme of the prelude, the allegro embodies the absolute hustle and bustle of the big city. Explosive harmonies progress through the movement. Melodies from the prelude now intertwine with this new faster theme, playing more lively and vigorous. The mood has changed. Everything seems fast-paced and maybe overloading. But, maybe that's not a bad thing. A bit into the movement, as the hustle and bustle finally slow down, the essence of the prelude returns to calm the music. Homesickness mixed with overwhelming emotions is just as powerful of an expression as joy or anger. Filled with confidence and resolve, the music quickens back into its fast theme. The nature of intense focus, inspired by the urban surroundings, mixes with the joy and fun of the old ways. Everything now seems not just more familiar and comforting, but lively as well. As the music reaches its end, those unsettling chords from the prelude return to once again remind us that the rural lifestyle will always be a part of us. Maybe this city life won't be such a bad thing. We experience the best life when it comes with change. While I never lived in a rural community myself, I can empathize with the experience of people who have from their own stories and emotions. And when they move into the overwhelming cityscape, they sometimes either break down or build up. In the end, though, I can never really understand what it is like until I move into a rural community. But I know nothing will ever change how they grew up there, as the experiences always seem to follow them into the next chapter of their adventures. And it is because of that kind of beautiful resolve, did I nickname this Prelude and Allegro Urbanalia. When life meets change it opens up a whole new story.

Composition has started during the COVID-19 pandemic and was completed last year (2021) premiered live with the film in Prague, Czech Republic by a prime string ensemble Epoque Quartet that also played the whole piece in the film. The visual part of the project has emotional attachment to the city of Prague, each movement brings poetic visions of the city, raising the questions - Did we really lose ourselves? Is humanity going to destroy itself with its endless and arrogant greed? Where are we heading? After three dark movements we find in the last movement a hope in human creativity, love and finding a light in the end of the dark tunnel. Written when Beethoven was 31, the Moonlight Sonata (Mondscheinsonate in German) was composed after he finished some commissioned works, but there is no evidence that he was hired to write this work. It did not receive its nickname until 1832, five years after Beethoven's death. It was the critic Ludwig Rellstab who compared the music to a moonlighting on Lake Lucerne. This comparison was adopted as a nickname for the work. Called Quasi una fantasia by the author - like its companion Op. 27, No. 1 - the piece was completed in 1801 and dedicated the following year to one of the composer's pupils. Beethoven chose to open the sonata with a slow, hypnotic arpeggio movement, the best known of the entire work. The dotted rhythm of its minimal melody evokes the tradition of 'Trauermusik' (funeral music).

Sacrum Creaturae (2019) (score and parts) for string quartet and digital acoustic commissioned and premiered August 18th, 2021 at the Stringwood Chamber Music Festival by the Artaria String Quartet, profiles three endangered creatures: wolves, dolphins, and birds in the three movements of this string quartet. Each of the digital acoustics, the recorded and processed sounds of wolves, dolphins, and birds, explore the sounds of these creatures from three perspectives. Canis Lupus-Nocturne developed through the exploration of wolf howls, growls, snarls, barks, and choruses. My goal in integrating the sounds of wolves with the string quartet was to make them equally passionate and expressive driving the dynamic and emotional climaxes of the music with equal intensity. Programatically, I have placed the wolves deep in the forest, in an environment that allows the string quartet to evoke the mystery and primal energy associated with these animals. I make musical references to the controversy of re-introducing these animals in the wild and the history of violent annihilation by hunters. Delphinus-Cradlesong comprises the slow, middle movement of this piece. The cradlesong is literal and is inspired by the recent discovery by marine scientists that a mother dolphin will sing to its unborn calf so that it bonds with the mother and is familiar with her voice after birth. I have essentially orchestrated my Cradlesong for solo piano for string quartet and the whistling sounds of a mother dolphin singing to its calf. The final movement, 21 Birds, incorporates the bird calls of 21 birds in the Driftless region of the upper Mississippi, integrated with the thematic music of the string quartet. I treat the birds as 21 soloists and as an orchestra of birds accompanying the quartet. In the performance with the quartet, I have employed various special effects, such as reverberation, echo, and delay to blend the two acoustics. This pieces begins with frantic minimalist repetitions contrasting with a slower more introspective and sad melody. The two sections are then combined simultaneously. An optional improv section leaves the door open for performers to leave their own commentary under a hushed reprise of the frantic repetitions. Originally written for string trio, this is the string quartet version
