String Quartet Cello,String Quartet,Viola,Violin - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1208520 Composed by Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 – 1827). Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. 19th Century,Chamber,Classical,Contest,Festival,Wedding. 15 pages. Jmsgu3 #806617. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1208520). 5. Allegro ma non troppo.Beethoven's Bagatelles Op. 33 are quite typical of his early style, retaining many compositional features of the early Classical period.  The first bagatelle in particular is arguably one of Beethoven's most well-known pieces. While they may seem light-hearted and not to be taken too seriously, they are still well-crafted works that embody the younger Beethoven's style. The Bagatelles Op. 33 were composed by Beethoven in 1801-02 and published in 1803. Bagatelles are shorter and less complex than sonatas, often consisting of a single movement. They were intended to be played as light entertainment or as encores at the end of a concert.Bagatelle No. 5 of Beethoven's Op. 33 is a short piece that showcases the composer's mastery of melody and harmony. The piece is in the key of C major and is written in a simple ternary form, with a lively and playful opening theme that is followed by a contrasting middle section in the homotonic key of C minor. The opening theme is characterized by its use of syncopation, which give it a lively and energetic feel. The middle section, on the other hand, is more introspective and lyrical, with a more subdued and melancholic mood. The piece ends with a return to the opening theme, which is now played in a surprising and forceful manner. Overall, Bagatelle No. 5 is a charming and delightful piece that showcases Beethoven's skill in creating memorable melodies and harmonies within a concise and compact form.

String Quartet Cello,String Quartet,Viola,Violin - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1353485 Composed by Felix Bartholdy Mendelssohn. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. 19th Century,Chamber,Contest,Festival,Historic,Romantic Period. 36 pages. Jmsgu3 #938223. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1353485). The Significance of Mendelssohn's Preludes and Fugues, Op. 37, lies in its role in developing the organ repertoire and reflecting Mendelssohn's compositional style. The work, written in 1837, consists of three preludes and fugues for organ. Here are some critical aspects of its significance: Mendelssohn's compositional style: The Preludes and Fugues, Op. 37, showcase Mendelssohn's unique style, characterized by a combination of Romantic expressiveness and Classical form. This style is evident in the structure, harmony, and melodic content.  Influence of J.S. Bach: Mendelssohn's Preludes and Fugues, Op. 37, are heavily influenced by the style of J.S. Bach, a composer Mendelssohn greatly admired. This influence can be seen in the pieces' counterpoint, harmonic language, and formal structure. Pedal technique: In Op. 37, Mendelssohn composed independent pedal parts that reveal a thorough understanding of the role of the pedals in organ music. For the first time, he composed pedal passages that required more than minimal competency, demonstrating his skill in writing for the organ. Expansion of the organ repertoire: Mendelssohn was an accomplished organist and wrote dozens of works for the instrument. The Preludes and Fugues, Op. 37, contribute to expanding the organ repertoire and demonstrate Mendelssohn's mastery of the medium. Historical context: The Preludes and Fugues, Op. 37, were written when Mendelssohn was also working on his Six Sonatas, Op. 65. This period of productivity and exploration of the organ medium further highlights the significance of Op. 37 in Mendelssohn's compositional output. In summary, Mendelssohn's Preludes and Fugues, Op. 37, are significant to music history due to their reflection of Mendelssohn's compositional style, influence by J.S. Bach, innovative pedal technique, contribution to the organ repertoire, and historical context within Mendelssohn's compositional output.

String Quartet String Quartet - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1004707 Composed by Adrian Gagiu. 20th Century,Contemporary. Score and parts. 132 pages. Adrian Gagiu #5038243. Published by Adrian Gagiu (A0.1004707). String Quartet No. 1 in A minor, op. 12 (1999), a cyclic composition in Neo-Classical style, partly influenced by Romanian folk music, Shostakovich and Bartok. Its compositional language, while not avant-garde and not exceedingly difficult, might help students with some aspects of modern music and liberties taken with classical forms. The first movement (Larghetto - Allegro non troppo) presents first dramatically and mysteriously the core motifs and themes of the entire composition, followed by a surprisingly relaxed sonata movement in the relative key of C major. The following Scherzo (Allegro assai), in E major, plays humorously and vigorously with derived motifs, and the third movement (Adagio assai), in F sharp minor, is treated in variations on the Romanian Christmas carol La Vitleem colo jos ('Down at Bethlehem'). The dramatic and expanding sonata form of the fourth movement (Allegro con brio - Larghetto) returns finally to the A minor of the introduction, then dissolving into the transcendent, slow coda. The mp3 audio clip is a recording of the finale. Total duration 26 min. Performing Rights Organization: SOCAN.

String Quartet String Quartet - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1402959 Composed by Robert A. Howard. 21st Century,Chamber,Classical,Contemporary,Contest,Festival. 95 pages. Robert A. Howard #986178. Published by Robert A. Howard (A0.1402959). This Second String Quartet is in four movements, and runs to over 30 minutes long. The work uses the traditionally expected forms for each movement, as a framework or starting point for departure, but also uses a conceptual title for the work as a whole. In this case 'Locomotion', or the conveying of motion (especially with regards to train travel), was used as a compositional stimulus in creating extended pattern-based textures, as well as the development, or journey, of motifs and themes. Otherwise, there is no particular attempt to evoke the sound of particular modes of transportation, or certain landscapes or scenes. Such imagery is left at the discretion of the listener. Formally, the work begins with a loose sonata form first movement, based around E (modal minor). The second movement, on A, bears the hallmarks of a busy scherzo, while the sentimental slow movement in D minor that follows is based on ground basses, in a ternary form of two varied themes. The extended finale grows out of the previous movement, with a jig-like rondo theme on another ground bass. Contrasting episodes feature modulating material, as well as a secondary theme in C. The final section sees a cyclic return of the first movement's first theme, now at the finale's faster tempo, and in the closing key of G minor. The work as a whole sees much use of canonic, or heterophonic textures, within a broadly minimalist style.  Duration: 32 minutes.Registered with PRS (Performing Rights Society, UK).Composer's website: www.roberthowardmusic.co.uk

String Quartet String Quartet - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.938389 Composed by Colin Bayliss. 20th Century,Contemporary. Score and parts. 46 pages. Colin Bayliss #6143. Published by Colin Bayliss (A0.938389). This was written in the summer of 2000 for the Lochrian Ensemble who were beginning to plan the recording of the complete string quartets. In the context of the other string quartets, here there is a reversion to the classical form, thus giving a balance between the classical quartets nos. 1, 2 and 6 and the kaleidoscopic quartets nos. 3, 4 and 5. It is in the conventional four movements:- 1. Allegro - This movement is in single subject sonata form using one figure. There is much use of quasimodal writing, especially using the Lochrian and Superlochrian modes, based both on E and C and the Mixolydian mode on E, giving a sort of tonality in which the constructional remainder notes of the serial row can be used sparingly. The pull towards a tonality of F is therefore established quickly. Each section is rounded off by the metamorphosis of the figure into a sentimental tune, but contrary to expectation, it evolves in the coda into something completely different - the opening of Beethoven's F minor string quartet Op. 95. 2. Scherzo - Wobblefunk and Tango After the last movement's ending has dispelled any seriousness, the stage is set for an outrageous scherzo. After the tango, the wobblefunk section is repeated bar by bar in reverse. Why not? It doesn't make any sense the right way round! Historical note: the term wobblefunk was invented by the composer's son Edmund to describe a type of subdued electronic crossover style music which he had written. In keeping with the family sense of humour, the thought of incorporating such a movement into a serious string quartet appealed to both parties. 3. Adagio - This movement is tonal and melodic, but introduced by a discordant motif which re-appears as if to remind the listener of their own mortality. The movement progresses through the cycle of fifths and then dissolves into a sinister coda related to the notes of the discord. 4. Allegro - This movement can be summed up as accepting life's problems but getting on with enjoying the good things as well - in the spirit of the last movement of Beethoven's string quartet Op.135. Must it be? It must be! Even if it includes a textural fugue! The ending, however, is decidedly not as clear-cut as Beethoven's ....... Guthrie, ASCAP. 19th Century,Chamber,Classical,Contest,Festival,Wedding. 14 pages. Jmsgu3 #804421. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1206223). No. 2. Scherzo: Allegro.Beethoven's Bagatelles Op. They were intended to be played as light entertainment or as encores at the end of a concert. The Bagatelle No. 2 of Op. 33 follows a simple ternary form, with a lively and playful Scherzo character. The piece is in the key of C major and is written in 2/4 time signature. The A section is characterized by a catchy and rhythmic melody that is repeated twice, with slight variations in the second repetition. The B section, in the relative key of A minor, provides a contrast to the A section with a more lyrical and expressive melody. The B section is also repeated twice, with slight variations in the second repetition. The A section returns in its original form to close the piece. The piece is relatively simple in terms of harmony and texture, with a clear melody and accompaniment. However, Beethoven's use of repetition, variation, and elaboration creates a sense of unity and coherence throughout the piece.
