It was natural for me to think about old-time fiddling in this light. In 1909 Washington Irving described the Catskill Mountains as a dismembered branch of the Appalachian Mountains. My own Dutch ancestors settled in the Hudson Valley in the early 1600â€™s, and eventually traveled down the Appalachians to settle in the South in the early 1800â€™s. The old-time fiddling that dominated those areas along that route is the musical language utilized in creating this String Quartet.For the musical genesis of the Quartet, I initially created phrases from the fiddle that were molded out of old-time fiddling tradition. With technical twists and turns, the phrases became unique and new but all the while still connected to the tradition. It is these phrases that I used as material to create the String Quartet. Through the process of composing, techniques such as re- harmonization, development, canonic applications spill over each other like the Hudson tributaries in the Adirondacks. The counterpoint of the Quartet invigorates and establishes itself. The result is a wholly participating body emphasizing transitions from the traditional to the contemporary in sound and style. The music here is no longer fiddle music as the inventions of the quartet embarks on a new story, a new way to play, and with a new musical idea to put forward. It was recorded by Glenn Miller and his orchestra, becoming a chart hit in 1942, and in 1960 by Etta James, who was subsequently inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. The song is a frequent wedding favourite for quartets. I also have a version for string quartet without a vocalist listed on this site, which is very similar, but entails more double stopping for the players. I am also planning to do several arrangements of this wonderful classic, including a version with a simplified first violin part. This version is for a professional quartet, as the opening is tricky for the first violin. However, most of the double stopping includes open strings for one of the notes. This is a great opportunity for the singer to try her improvisational skills, so I have taken the vocal line from the original, with a few tweaks here and there. This is not set in stone however, and our recording shows my daughter embellishing the vocal line. Nevertheless, the quartet parts are almost identical to the score I am uploading. As I am classically trained, it was quite difficult, at first, for me to stick to the beat and not to try to follow the singer when accompanying on the piano! Itâ€™s important to remember to keep the quartet in rock solid time so that she can feel free to pull the lines away from the main pulse sometimes. Little slides up to notes suit the style well too. Look out for the upcoming simpler version if this one feels a bit daunting and exposed! Have fun and post me any recordings. I can be found on Facebook very easily.

I always carry manuscript paper with me to jot down melodies and other musical thoughts that pop into my head but never an entire piece of music. The following is how that all changed.Being an avid hiker, I set out one early autumn day. It was one of those wonderfully crisp, clear days that only New England offers. As I rounded a bend of the forested mountain trail there was a stony promontory that offered an unparalleled view of the valley below with its rolling pastures and farmlands and, still more distant, a waterfall. I followed the narrow ribbon of water with my eye as it twisted and wove its way through the trees and periodic meadows until I found myself gazing down onto a small village. Actually, it was more like a tiny hamlet, a few homes, two or three stone buildings, a small white church, a commons complete with bandstand and gardens and a mill with its waterwheel slowly spinning from the water that was diverted through a sluice from the river. As I continued to observe the scene below I became cognizant that within my mind I was hearing the soft pizzicato of a cello. It was soon followed by a viola in imitation and then finally the violins joined in, first with melody and then harmony. The solution was to extract the manuscript paper and pen from my backpack and write down what I heard.

Hey fiddlers,Â One thing we know about old Scottish folk tunes is they never grow old, and even though we may never know who first wrote the delightful melody, â€œThe Corrie Man,â€ we can tell from its lilting qualitiesâ€”with its cheerful and spirited flowâ€”that it brings to us images of the u-shaped valleys that are so familiar to the highlands of Scotland.Â We can easily imagine playing this traditional session tune among the rolling hills and farmlands of Scotland where musicians gather in their favorite places to playâ€”near a tree or brook, on a farmhouse porch, in a sitting room or even in the kitchen. Â Not to mention the casual setting of a pub where friends gather to raise a pint and sit in a big circle with an array of other fiddlers and musicians, playing tunes side-by-side enjoying each otherâ€™s company!Â With this backdrop our cellist Genevieve dedicated her time to arrange this artful reel for string quartet as part of our debut album, after which she had the wonderful opportunity to visit Scotland to study and perform with Alisdair Fraser and Natalie Haas, who inspired her to be a part of the rich tradition of preserving and performing Scottish folk music.We hope you will find that same inspiration while playing this piece with your friends and colleagues as much as we do. Single-movement work for string quartet Northern Landscapes is a piece inspired by a trip I made in December 2019 to Mancora, a city and also a well-known beach resort in the Piura region, in northwestern Peru. There are no direct flights to Mancora and the trip by land from the nearest airport takes about an hour, crossing a desert landscape of beautiful yellow, orange and brown shades, which extend through endless valleys and majestic canyons. It is this part of my journey to Mancora that inspired me to write Northern Landscapes, whose objective is simply to capture the essence of that sensation of going at great speed through a colorful scenery.
