There is obvious reference to the title in the repeated time signatures, the dynamics and the thick texture. This movement, the second of a set of three,is quite short, probably because the opening harmony has a strong presence either by interrupting or becoming a point of return and also, being a symmetrical chord, has a calming effect within other contexts.

Música Callada (2022) to Federico Mompou.  His music I love!In my search for a string quartet inspiration I discovered that Darius Milhaud wrote eighteen string quartets.  I knew he spent a few years in Brazil as a diplomat, and I have always admired the Brazilian influences in his own music, like the twelve-movement work for solo piano, Saudades do Brasil.† So it became obvious that SQ18 is dedicated in memoriam to Darius Milhaud.SQ18 ... Published by Des Press (A0.977359). Abba released Take a Chance on Me - from ABBA: The Album - in January 1978 and it became one of their biggest hits. Influences from this track can be heard in the charts through the following decade and beyond. Needless to say, it remains popular today. As usual with ABBA tracks, the sound production is a work of art in itself: Myriad small details are woven into the tapestry of this high-energy song, such as an audacious one-note string arrangement, a baritone saxophone, state-of-the-art (at the time) synthesized effects and sophisticated multi-voice overdubbing which includes a less-than-perfect layer that may not be obvious but adds to the character and makes listeners more comfortable singing along, The guitar has awesome sustain, sounding almost Hawaiian, with some very slick licks in-between. This arrangement for string quartet cannot boast such complexity in four parts but tips its hat at what details can be squeezed into an idiomatic transcription. As usual in this series from Des Press, the all-important bass-line is used, giving the cellist a chance to shine as a throbbing groove-machine. This arrangement is in the same tonality as the original recording, so you could even play along for fun. The level is on the easier side of advanced; quickly rehearsed by professional quartets and an accessible challenge for experienced students. Enjoy!

Sir Edward Elgar’s compositional output was prolific, with many well-known pieces, including the Pomp & Circumstance marches, Dream of Gerontius, and of course, the Engima Variations. Elgar’s legacy has been widely debated, but there is no doubt of his influence on ‘English’ music and composers such as Ralph Vaughan Williams, but also further afield, on composers as diverse as Richard Strauss, Jean Sibelius, and Igor Stravinsky. Along with a central theme woven and varied throughout the work, each movement of Engima Variations is also a musical illustration, based on a family member or close friend of Elgar, and indeed Elgar himself. He dedicated the work “to my friends pictured withinâ€. “Nimrod†is the name given to the ninth movement, based on Elgar’s editor and publisher, Augustus J, Jaeger. Musically, there is an obvious hint at the 2nd movement of Beethoven’s Piano Sonata Pathetique, but beyond this there are beautiful legato lines spread across the whole ensemble and a wide variety of timbral, dynamic, and tempo colourations. “Nimrod†has become a popular piece as a standalone item – often featuring in funerals, memorial services, and other solemn events such as Remembrance Sunday. Hans Zimmer also adapts the piece for use in the score for the 2017 film Dunkirk, and has become a standard tune to represent stoic ‘Britishness’. I have re-arranged this carol for three violins instead of viola, as a flexible possibility. If you would like to watch a video of a professional quartet playing my arrangement on Youtube, look up my channel by typing Skinny Black Dogs, Capriccio Quartet, O Come Emmanuel. This version is almost identical, though Violin 3 sometimes goes up an octave and passes on the lower notes to the cellist who gets some double stopping! The quartet play it beautifully, but it could also be played by a very young quartet because most of the he double stopping includes one note on an open string. Grade 5 ABRSM could manage it, and possible Grade 3! It will sound mediaeval with the open strings ringing out. The key is a very easy one for strings. However there are a few surprises in the counting so watch out! It isn’t always obvious, but with a few rehearsals you will have a fresh take on a very old carol. It would be great for a string orchestra, or a quartet in an end of term carol service. If you perform it, take a video, even if on a phone, and send it to me on Facebook. I would love to see some young people enjoying it.

Mendelssohn was a musical genius and it's obvious when you consider he penned this astounding composition by the age of 16. He wrote the octet as a birthday gift for his friend and violin teacher Eduard Rietz who was 23 at the time. This arrangement makes it possible for a string quartet to play the 1st movement. It's not always easy to get eight accomplished string players to sit down and read through music and this might make it more accessible and practical to play. The 1st violin part is the same as it was penned by Mendelssohn. The other parts are condensed. It takes some practicing even to read the music as it's somewhat difficult. And since the parts are condensed it's difficult to manuever page turns. I'll leave that up to the players. Still, it's fun to play and can be performed if you can work out the page turns.Probably work great on an I pad for that. I'm old school so my generation does cutting and pasting as needed ! Have fun. Great for parties, background music, wedding reception and general string quartet gigs.. .
