Published by Colin Bayliss (A0.938413). Piano Trio (B44) was written in the spring of 1991 for David Johnson and the trio which he was forming in Cologne. The work is in three movements:-1. Structures The three instruments build differing structural patterns based on a 12-note row. The violin and 'cello often complement each other, but the piano rarely joins them and tries to pull the music towards a diatonic tonal language, eventually succeeding to end in G major. The movement is in arch form, the second half being based on the retrogrades of the note row. 2. Textures Most forms of sound textures are used, including col legno and sul ponticello for the strings, while the piano occasionally employs soft-headed timpani sticks both on the keyboard and the interior of the instrument. Again the movement is in arch form, with a central section incorporating a miniature scherzo, with a trio section parodying the palm court trio style with a tune of sickly sentimentality. [ This movement may be played separately under the title Einer Kleiner Alptraum - A Little Night... mare] 3. Metamorphoses The notes which will eventually become a Scottish folk tune are hidden either in the repeated notes or in the left hand of the piano, either singly or in harmony. After a neo- classical exposition, using a serial melody, progress is quickly halted by the use of some of the notes of the folk tune being arranged into the theme of Weber's Turandot which was used by Hindemith in his Symphonic Metamorphoses . This pulls the music into a slightly more tonal frame work which becomes more pronounced after a reference to the theme of the slow movement of the Eroica symphony used in Richard Strauss' Metamorphosen. From then onwards, tonality, or rather modality, is established and the folk tune style is maintained with simplicity to the end, except for a miniscule coda reminiscent of the opening of the movement. Here is a beautiful, gently flowing arrangement for an instrumental trio (CELLO and VIOLIN duet with PIANO accompaniment). The tune is the traditional American melody PLEADING SAVIOR from Joshua Leavitt's Christian Lyre. Though this song is known by many titles, this title, Rainbow of His Love, corresponds to the lyrics about the rainbow by Flora Kirkland (lyrics sheet included for reference).  The VIOLIN carries the melody for the first verse while the CELLO adds harmony. For the second time through the song (after a short piano interlude), the CELLO carries the melody while the VIOLIN alternates between a descant and harmony. This is a fairly easy and straight-forward arrangement for both instruments and accompanist. The range for each instrument is as follows: VIOLIN – F4 to A5; CELLO – A2 to D4. For both the VIOLIN and CELLO, all notes are playable in the first position making this piece an excellent choice for early intermediate string players. Duration 3:00. This beautiful Christmas folk melody by John Jacob Niles is arranged as an instrumental trio (for VIOLIN and CELLO with PIANO accompaniment). The beautiful, lyrical style of this instrumental piece creates a mellow, curious atmosphere and is an ideal selection for any church setting.
Both the CELLO and VIOLIN get to lead with the melody at times making it enjoyable and equally challenging for both players while adding variety for the listeners. For the first verse, the VIOLIN carries the melody and the CELLO plays melody for the second verse. For the final (third) verse, the two parts alternate playing the melody as a solo followed by playing as a duet for the concluding phrases. The audio sample begins at the pickup to measure 7 after the PIANO introduction.
Ranges for the string instruments are as follows: VIOLIN ~ E4 to B5; CELLO ~ G2 to C4 (middle C). For both the VIOLIN and CELLO, all notes are playable in the first position. With the limited range and technical difficulty, this arrangement is an excellent choice for early-intermediate string players.
