Paolo Bellomio, Unveristy of Montreal, Canada, 2 March 2012Preface:In the early 1890s, Debussy composed the opening of a lyrical piece in E major for violin and piano, perhaps as a shorter companion piece for the violin Nocturne he was planning for the Belgian violinist Eugène Ysaÿe. After Debussy’s death in 1918, his second wife Emma often gave away sketch pages to performers or composers as memorials to her beloved husband , and this particular page was given to the Cuban born pianist and composer Joaquin Nin (1879-1949). It came up for sale in the catalogue of the British antiquarian dealer Lisa Cox in 2010 and although it might possibly be an early song for contralto and piano, the more dynamic idea in bar 12 strongly suggests the violin, especially as it begins on an open D string. Moreover, there is no text and in pieces of this length, Debussy usually wrote at least one word in, if only to remind himself where he had got to in any song. So my starting point was a complete 12-bar melody gently undulating in the violin’s lowest register over a sensual accompaniment, rising to a climax in bar 12 and giving me a contrasting idea that I could use as a link between sections and in the cadenza. As the B section (bars 14-26) derives directly from Debussy’s opening theme by metamorphosis, my own additions were restricted to the central section (bars 27-57) - comprising a new scherzando idea (C) and the more lyrical D (bars 36-46). C returns at bar 47, followed by the opening sections in reverse order, so that the Sérénade begins and ends with Debussy’s material and is cast in arch form (ABCDCBA). Robert OrledgeBrighton, 19 June 2019Robert Orledge was born in Bath in 1948 and educated at Clare College, Cambridge, where he gained his doctorate for his study of the composer Charles Kœchlin in 1973. Between 1971 and 1991 He rose from Lecturer to Professor in the Music Department of the University of Liverpool, publishing books on Gabriel Fauré, Claude Debussy, Charles Kœchlin and Erik Satie, as well as numerous articles, editions and reviews. As a historical musicologist, Professor Orledge specialized in the way composers composed, ,and since taking early retirement in 2004, he has concentrated on completing and orchestrating Debussy’s unfinished works, and especially his theatre projects. His completion of Debussy’s opera The Fall of the House of Usher (1908-17) was successfully premiered at the Bregenz Opera Festival in Austria in August 2006 and has since been performed in America, Portugal Germany and Holland, as well as being broadcast throughout Europe. A DVD of the Bregenz premier is available on Capriccio 93517, produced by Phylida Lloyd and conducted by Lawrence Foster. His completion of the Chinese ballet No-ja-li ou Le Palais du Silence (1914) was also premiered in 2006 in Los Angeles and ot.

First of all, my enormous gratitude to Deborah Leath Rentz for the source material: Songs and the Spirit: Hancock Shaker Village's Musical Legacy, Volume I. Transcriptions of Hancock Hymnal : 1850. In 1997, Mark Ludwig commissioned me to write a work based on a Shaker song. Ms. Rentz provided me with a lovely song, Grateful Remembrance, from her collection. The result was SEPTET: Variations on a Shaker Tune. Hancock Shaker Village is in many ways also a set of variations. It begins with a Prelude of my own devising. For the rest of the work I chose five songs from Ms. Rentz's book which provide a glimpse of a typical day for the inhabitants of this religious community. The first song, Pillar of Fire, greets the dawn and the rising sun. The second song, Glean with Care, is about the orchards and the gardens. The third, Sweet Home, is about the religious life and home. The fourth, Quick, a lively dance number, prays for God's power and grace. The last song, Farewell Dear Crossbearers, is for the dearly departed. I note with bemusement that I had cheated somewhat by providing leading titles which in themselves are at times longer than one of the tersely limited lines. The poem by Sappho was also one I had discovered in my own handwriting such that at first I did not remember who wrote such a splendid verse. All four were discovered, so to speak, by me from my more distant youth and set to music when I myself had just turned 21. There are four movements, Ina Cabin by the Sea - Indoors - An Evening Request - Alone. Total 8 minutes.

This arrangement consists of two parts which can be played either seperately, or consecutively: the famous “Air On The G String†(BWV 1068, as in the 1871 arrangement by August Wilhemj), inspired by Jaques Loussier´s “Play Bachâ€- version, and the fugue c-minor from the Well-Tempered Piano (BWV 847), inspired by the magnificent Turtle Island String Quartet´s incomparable swinging rendition (hence the video link). There are several options of playing this arrangement: “Air†has two parts which can be repeated – thus, violin1 and cello can distribute the theme. Of course, these repetitions are optional. If you want to play the Air only – there is an optional ending in bar 22. If you want to play only the fugue – start from bar 23 (intro), or from bar 30 (theme). Or you choose to play Air and fugue consecutively. The arrangement works great either ways ;-). Piano voice is written out. However, there are also chord symbols for your own voicings. Minimal instrumentation: piano trio (violin1, cello, piano). Comes with full score and all individual parts. Optional voices for violin 2 and bass, clarinet Bb, guitar, and drums included. If Toy Story and Toy Story 2 hadn't already entirely induced a nostalgic empathy from its audience for the life of old toys we used to play with, Jessie's heartfelt song of her memories with 'Emily' tugs the heart strings to make grown men cry. Randy Newman wrote a perfect little gem in this short but iconic moment in movie history. In the most respectful way the write and the song do so little SO well. The orchestration is sparse but completely appropriate and supportive. This arrangement follows the original soundtrack as closely as possible and would make a wonderful addition to a kids or education concert or an evening of film, musicals or just a celebration of great song writers. Thank you Randy Newman for your wonderful understated genius for using musical simplicity to unpack human complexity.

Published by azdi (A0.1029901). On the beaches of Tijuana August 2018 It is a sound work for chamber orchestral ensemble based on the traditional and anonymous Son Istmeño La Llorona. Developed under a minimalist aesthetic influenced by ambient and experimental music. It fuses the themes of the traditional son with melodic and rhythmic motifs of popular Mexican rock songs also inspired by this traditional rhythm: La muerte chiquita by Café Tacuba and Llorona by Caifanes. It is structured similar to the format of a rock song. Start with a long base note or drone. Introduction (intro) about a descending harmony in the key of La Menor. A melody as a verse and a different melody as choir. Both melodies are presented and performed by different instruments with variations and different combinations of accompaniment and instrumentation. Variations of the thematic patterns and the ¨intro¨. A rhythmic-melodic experiment towards the end on the same descending harmonic progression as the solo part in a rock song. It ends with a fading orchestral atmosphere (outro). All oriented towards a minimalist style setting focused on melodic lines and emotional expressiveness. For a chamber orchestra. Ideally a string septet consisting of: 2 violins. 2 violas. 2 cellos. 1 double bass. Breaths: 1 trombone. 1 trumpet. 1 transverse flute. 1 Picollo flute. 1 Clarinet. 1 Oboe. Percussion of a determined note. It can be a vibraphone. Xylophone (preferably) or marimba. If it is not possible to use this type of instrument, that part is played an octave up on a piano. The number of instruments can be increased for each of the parts if needed and be convenient for the chamber orchestra in question. The Tempo can vary between 95 and 115 bpm. The work is designed so that it can be performed mainly by youth and children's orchestras. The string parts have bowings, legatos, dynamics and rehearsal marks A, B, C, etc. to help and to speed up the learning process. Just count, respect the bow directions and You're done. It's a beautiful song and it sounds great with solo Saxophone.
