While it was composed in a traditional ABA structure, there are many elements in this composition which are not at all traditional. As the piece awakens, the oboes and flutes seem innocent and coquettish. As orchestral participation grows, one has the sense of an entire field of rich colors growing before our very ears. Enter the piano. Simple, elegant and romantic. Softly supported by the strings, the piano issues an invitation to the winds. They respond cautiously, obviously curious to see what this charming piano has in mind. The strings express an opinion. It's not what the piano wants and he presses harder. The strings and winds question each other, back and forth with triplets. Who is this piano? The mid-section is an announcement by the strings that a love relationship may be in the cards. The piano replies with passion and tenderness.With eighth notes, the strings become entangled with the piano, counseling it, guiding it. The winds using triplets put their two cents on the table. They're not so sure. The piano makes a passionate plea; the strings are supportive. The piano and the winds have a conversation. They finally dance together. In the end,.Appassionato is a musical expression of the struggle over whether or not love is worth the risk Sometimes in conflict sometimes in harmony, the piano and winds do unite. Passion has won.

Wayfaring Stranger- for small orchestra. Traditional American Folk Song arranged by John Hoesly. Also known as Poor Wayfaring Stranger and I Am A Poor Wayfaring Stranger, this song probably originated in the early 19th century. It has been recorded numerous times, but most significantly appears in the 2019 film 1917 where a soldier sings this plaintive melody to his fellow comrades just before going into battle. This arrangement is divided into two sections. Section one is a very haunting scenario, very plain with insistent harmonic devices. The second section is a more elaborate version with more harmonic movement and tempo extensions to create more drama. It ends as plaintively as it begins.

Wayfaring Stranger- for Solo Voice (High Voice) and small orchestra. Traditional American Folk Song arranged by John Hoesly. Also known as Poor Wayfaring Stranger and I Am A Poor Wayfaring Stranger, this song probably originated in the early 19th century. It has been recorded numerous times, but most significantly appears in the 2019 film 1917 where a soldier sings this plaintive melody to his fellow comrades just before going into battle. This arrangement is divided into two sections. Section one is a very haunting scenario, very plain with insistent harmonic devices. The second section is a more elaborate version with more harmonic movement and tempo extensions to create more drama. It ends as plaintively as it begins.

Score and parts of a premiere realization of some of Beethoven's sketches for the first movement of another Symphony in C major before the First, dubbed 'No. 0' or Unv. 2 by some: 1. 'Overture' (Andante con moto - Allegro con brio), 2. Tempo di menuetto. Useful for people interested in Beethoven's sketches and for students of the Classical style. In 1794-1796, Beethoven made extensive concept sketches mostly for the first movement of this abortive symphony. The material is abundant and sometimes contradictory, as usual with his preliminary work, and he recycled later from this one only the main theme of the Finale of the completed Symphony No. 1. For this speculative realization, suggested by Mr. Armando Orlandi at the Centro Ricerche Musicali and dedicated to them, only the more promising sketches were utilized, and the slow introduction was assembled from the ones in cut time, while those in triple time make up now a Minuet. Virtually every bar of music here includes the sketches, also in the elaboration and coda of the 'overture', only with a few transpositions needed for assembling the sonata form and for the repeats in the Minuet. Obviously, Beethoven would have done it much differently, had he decided to continue working on this symphony, and the question remains regarding the utility of recycling material abandoned by some classical composer. However, this gives one an approximate idea of one of the many possibilities implied by the preliminary sketches for his Symphony 'No. 0'. Total duration 15 minutes. The 1st movement has its origin in some music sketched for a student's film project on Windmills in 1997. The 2nd movement is a Minuet with a touch of dry humour. The 3rd movement 'Romanza' is expressive with a touch of reflective sadness. The last movement is a lightheated Jig with an obviously Irish twist. The Serenade is easily accessible and within the capacity of a good amateur orchestra.

Techniques are carefully detailed to show ornaments, slurs, accents etc. This edition restores many elements missing in other versions available. The strings here are restored to the original voicings so important to the style of the classic sound of the period.The solos are transcribed note for note as played by greats such as Billy Butterfield on Trumpet, Johnny Guarnieri on Piano, Les Robinson on Alto Sax, Jerry Jerome on Tenor Sax, Vernon “Brownie” Brown on Trombone.There is an entire sax riff that was extemporaneously improvised during the session that is missing entirely in other published versions. The motive for writing this poem was to comfort his mother, who was in Ireland while M.Scriven was living in Canada, when she lay sick in her bed. Scriven originally wrote this poem anonymously, and it was not until 1880 that his name became known. The hymn's melody was composed by Charles Crozat Converse in 1868. I quoted this beautiful melody and arranged it into a small violin concerto format.

This overture would make a lively concert opener for a group with smaller forces, or work just as well with a large string section. In the opera itself (Il re pastore, The Shepherd King; 1775), Mozart's overture  segues directly into the opening scene of Act One. Other Mozart overtures that segue thusly have been arranged with concert endings, such as The Abduction from the Seraglio (arr. Anton Andre) and Idomeneo, King of Crete (arr. Carl Reinecke). Most of the music contained in this arrangement is Mozart's, including the existing material from the original overture, developmental material of that music, and a segment extracted from the opera's final section. The work is about six minutes in length and is scored for one flute, two oboes, two bassoons, two horns in F, two trumpets in C, timpani, and string orchestra. A NotePerformer3 audio file is available from the arranger, as are parts in pdf format.
